Barbara,
I'm Jim Chesteen, the current genealogist for the Pierre Chastain Family Association. I ran across a posting of your's on the Rootsweb message boards tonight from back in October concerning the subject. I don't have access to my files at present but am familiar with this family. If I remember correctly, Sanford V. Chastain/Chasteen is William's father. Sanford being one of the Anderson County, SC Chastains that relocated across the border to GA in the late 1850's, early 1860's. We have not been able to get a fix on Sanford's parents, it seems likely that he was a son of a James Chastain born circa 1800 and whose father was Stephen Chastain born about 1762. Just not much "legal" documentation for this group as they left very few records.
Anyway, send me an email to remind me to check on this when I return home and will hopefully confirm.
