I went to Dial many years ago looking for the cemetary where my g,g,g,g grandmother Elizabeth Chastain Allen is buried but couldn't find it. Does anyone know where it is? Dial was a pretty little place. I remember a road that went through a creek.

Thank you for that information. I obviously was mistaken when I assumed that since the current owner said he bought the house from the family association that he was the first non Chastain owner.
I certainly don't want to pass along inaccuracies of any kind. So I apolgize for my misunderstanding.

The gentleman who currently owns the former Chastain home is not the first property owner who is not a descendant. At one point, the home had been given to the Atlanta Children's Orphanage.

Missouri marriage records show that Norah B. Chastain was under the age of 18 when she married Thomas W. Palmer, who obtained a marriage license on February 11, 1893. Apparently her parents were dead, because a W.J. Magee, listed as her guardian and curator, gave his written permission. At the time she lived in Chariton Township, Macon County, Missouri. I couldn't find the family in the census, but I did find a William J. Magee in 1880 living in Macon City, Macon County, Missouri. He was born about 1848 in Kentucky and his wife, Laura B. Magee, was born about 1852 in Missouri.

I am looking for my information on my great-great-grandfather, John D Chastain. He was married to a Nancy or Mary E. Jackson per family history. He had 4 children that I know of - William b abt 1853, Susan C Chastain b abt 1868(m John R Summers), Frank E Chastain b abt 1872 in Macon Cty, MO, and Norah Belle Chastain my great-grandmother born abt 1876 m Thomas Palmer 1892 or 1893 d in 1933. I have a picture that just has Frank & Norah Belle, and a couple of pictures labeled Aunt Susie Summers. The only census information I can make sense of is the 1880 census record, and John is listed as William. Family history states John was French; 1880 census says his father was born in France. His mother was born in SC, so they may be related to the Chastains I see posted here. Any information would be helpful. Thanks, Gaye Jacob

Thanks, cousin, that's good to know--all except the part about the vandalism. My sister says that when she visited a couple of years ago there were places, both upstairs and down, where you couldn't walk because the floors had rotted. It seemed then that the only way to save the place would be to completely rebuild it, which must be an expensive undertaking.
On her most recent visit, the site had been enclosed by a temporary fence. All the siding has been removed and new framing has been put in. All the stones from the chimneys have been saved, presumably to be re-laid when the framing work is done.

David,
I was at the Jason Coward Chastain House a few months ago and met the new owner. He is not a Chastain descendant and he is the first owner of the property who is not a descendant.
However, he is trying very hard to preserve the history of the house. He walked me through the house and it was quite an experience. It was in poor shape - but the interiors had never been 'modernized' so all of the interior walls were wood plank construction.
The plaque was taken out by vandals and they also had broken into the house and spray painted grafitti on some of the wood walls.
As you may know the Jason Coward Chastain Family Association has had annual reunions in the house for many years and he plans to allow them to continue to use the house once a year for that pupose.
His heart is definitely in the right place - I just hope he doesn't overdo the restoration.
Greg

It's on the west side of Dial Road, about one mile south of the Morganton Hwy. The plaque was affixed to a stone column in front.

>From what I can gather from the Chastain web site, Jason Coward CHASTAIN (1818-1904) was the only child of John C.
CHASTAIN by his first wife, Nancy COWARD. Apparently, the marriage only lasted about a year. John subsequently married Nancy WINTHROW (Withrow?) and they had nine children, including Benjamin Nelson CHASTAIN, who is my
gg-grandfather. Nancy COWARD lived to be about 60 and died here; she is buried near the hilltop behind the house. Her granddaughter, Alice, who died at the age of 10, was buried next to her.
Assuming I haven't made some blunder in identification, that means that the house was built by my ggg-half-uncle :-).

This house has been bought by someone who is not a descendant - the name slips me.

Hello, cousins,
A couple of years ago, my sister came across a farmhouse in Fannin County which had fallen into disrepair. It had a bronze plaque out front which identified it as the home of Jason Coward CHASTAIN (1818-1904), if I understand correctly. She inquired about it and learned that it still belonged to a Chastain descendant.
Last week, she noticed that the house is apparently in the process of being rebuilt. The bronze plaque was gone.
Does anyone know if this property is still in the family?
Is the history of this place being preserved?
