Janice,
I am descended from Rene Chastain and Judith Martin as well. In fact, I am
descended twice! LOL Their son, Rene, Jr. (m. Anne Ford) had two
grandchildren that married each other. Silas Chastain m. Nancy Ragland and
their daughter Julia A. Chastain (b. 1841-44 d. 1902), is my
ggg-grandmother.
I'm afraid I don't have anything about Elizabeth Ayres' parents so I guess I
am not terribly helpful!

Jessi,
We do connect somehow/somewhere - my mother is a Chastain. Her family ancestors moved from North Georgia to SW Missouri in 1892.
Basically all Chastains (and other variations of spellings) in the US eventually connect back to Pierre Chastain who came to America in 1720.
I sometimes work with the historian of the Pierre Chastain Family Association in a quest to identify and document all of the Chastains in the US. It's a big job - so basically I just take on any 'unknown' Chastains that happen to come up.

Chastine can be spelled so many different ways - and the family does pronounce it with the long syllable at the end. I am inclined to believe the conflict as well about MS. I have the stats on Wade, right down to his death certificate and beautiful pictures of him. That information is correct. I am so tickled to finally find my little granny's people! Greg, you rock!!
Thanks!!! Jessi
So, do you just help poor lost souls like me or are we connected somehow?

You are most welcome for the assistance. I'm glad I could help.
Since I last posted in regard to your family I also found a census record in 1910 as follows:
Chatooga, Oconee, South Carolina
Lee A Chasteen - b. abt 1878 in GA, Father GA, Mother GA
Martha Chasteen - b. abt 1882 in GA, Father GA, Mother GA
Minnie Chasteen - b. abt 1902 in GA, Father GA, Mother, GA
Ethel Chasteen - b. abt 1907 in GA, Father GA, Mother GA
I notice that even though the spelling of the surname is not Chastine - it phonetically still indicates to me that this family pronounced their last name Chastine - not Chastain. And it is not uncommon to encounter all sorts of different spellings on the census.
I also notice that Lee and Martha were born in GA - which conflicts with the 1920 census which said that Minnie's parents were born in MS. This is just the way the census records are - they will drive you crazy - as they often conflict.
I also found the social security death index record for Wade Shook - it states that he was born 5 Jul 1897 and died in Black Mountain, Buncombe, NC in Aug 1970.
I hope this additional information helps. It sounds to me as if you are on the right track.
Greg

This is wonderful! I have requested Granny's SS application and I believe you may be correct in that Lee was a nickname for Papaw Chastine. I also know now why I could never find anything on her - I was spelling her last name wrong! Thank you so much! This will make my little Poppa very happy!! Wade died in August of 1970 so I never got the chance to meet him and she remained unmarried. She was born Nov 25, 1901.
The only info I have on her parents are their names - Lee & Martha. I know Lee died when my mom was about 11 so that would have been around 1963 or 1964 and in Buncombe County, NC. I don't really know anything about Martha. Mom didn't remember her and neither did my Poppa.
I appreciate all your help!!!!

According to a book by K.P.Darling (LDS ref# 1316419, item #7, John (Jean Martain) Martin's father was Jeremie Martain and his mother was Marie Archambeau. Both born and probably died in France or Northern Italy. A book, "Waldenses in the New World" lists Jean as a member of the Waldenses, a religious sect founded by a man named Waldo that was prominent in Southern France and Northern Italy for several hundred years. They apparently were evangelical and were heavily persecuted by the Catholics.
John's wife was Margaret LeCaze , daughter of James LeCaze and Margaret Coop. She too was a Huguenot immigrant

Hi Jacque,
Though I have a few William McKinney's, I don't see any of them being part
of your line. I have attached a PDF file with a descendant chart. All of my
McKinney's are from Virginia, Kentucky and/or Missouri. If you see anything
on the attached chart you think might be a fit, let me know and I'll send you
more data.

First, I want to thank Terry and Tim for the new PCFA Web Page. This is
also part 1 of a 2 part message. The list server bounced the first version
because it was too long (Greater than 49 Kb).
When it comes to connecting with Pierre Chastain, my roots travel down the
following path:
Dora Caroline Chastain (G Grandmother) married Jefferson Fenn in Fulton
County (Atlanta), GA on 22 February 1883.
Dora was the daughter of Jane Brown Barton (1835 - 1928) and Peter Robinson
Chastain (17 Jul 1828 - 7 June 1862).
Peter Robinson Chastain was a son of Maxwell Denton Chastain (20 Sept 1802 -
4 Sept 1883) and Sarah Malinda Robinson (25 Sept 1808 - 6 Mar 1888).
Maxwell Denton Chastain was the son of John Chastain, Jr. (1766 - 1845) and
Jemima Denton (1770 - 1863)
John Jr. was the son of John Chastain (1743 - 1805) and Mary O'Bryan (1744
-1795).
John Chastain was the son of Pierre Chastain, Jr. (1707 - 1761) and Mildred
Archer (1710 - 1790).
And of course, Pierre Jr. was the son of Pierre Chastain and Anne Soblet.
Dora Caroline Chastain had 3 siblings, Nelson Avery Chastain, Flora Chastain
and Laura Chastain.
Nelson Avery Chastain is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta with his wife
and mother not far from His sister Dora and her husband Jefferson's plot.
He had his fingers in the railroad, was a deputy sheriff, owned a lot of
land in what was known as Chastain Town during the 1890's (not far from the
current Chastain Park in Atlanta that was named after Green Chastain), was
almost killed in a train accident, was one of Atlanta's politicians (Road
Commissioner) ., yes he lead a full life and died in 1921 (b. 1855). His
sister Dora died from Consumption in 1896 (b. 1861).
I am trying to find descendents of Flora and Laura Chastain and have had no
success in this task. Flora married a man whose surname was Walker and
Laura married a man with the surname of Griffith. Both Flora and Laura were
alive in 1928 when their mother Jane died as noted in Jane's obit.
John Chastain Sr. became a preacher in the Sandy Creek Association in North
Carolina upon leaving Manakin. In 1780 he and his family moved to the
Holston Country in Eastern Tennessee where he preached the Gospel. From
there he moved to the Greenville, SC area where he started a congregation
and in 1795 moved to Pumpkintown, SC when James Keith asked him to move
there and start the Oloney Baptist Church. I don't have the dates for when
he moved to Greenville from the Holston Country. I believe Elizabethan and
Roan Mountain Tennessee are part of the Holston Country.
The following is from "A General History of the Baptist Denomination in
America and Other Parts of the World" by David Benedict, copyright 1848,
page 791.
HOLSTON ASSOCIATION, Eastern Division.
As this is the oldest associational community in the State, I shall, under
this
head, give a few items of the history of the early adventurers to this
region,
and of their evangelical efforts in the new and rugged field which they
explored.
It is said there were two churches gathered in this part of Tennessee, which
was then a dangerous wilderness, some time before any of those arose whose
history we are now about to relate ; but they were broken up and scattered,
during the time of the Indian war. The circumstances under which they were
gathered, I have not been able to learn. They were probably collected some
time after the year 1765, and broken up in the Indian war, which happened in
1774. One of these churches was on Clinch river, a few of whose members
returned after the war, and the church was re-constituted by the name of
Glade
Hollow.
But the beginning of the first churches, which have had a permanent
standing,
was in the following manner: about the year 1780, William Murphy,
James Keel, Thomas Murrell, Tidence Lane, Isaac Barton, Mathew Talbot,
Joshua Kelby, and John Chastain, moved into what was called the Holston
country, when it was in a wilderness state, arid much exposed to the ravages
and depredations of the Indians. These ministers were all Virginians, except
Mr. Lane, who was from North Carolina. They were accompanied by a
considerable
number of their brethren from the churches which they left, and
were followed shortly after by Jonathan Mulky, William Reno, and some other
ministers and brethren, and among the other emigrants there was a small
body,
which went out in something like a church capacity. They removed from the
old church at Sandy creek in North Carolina, which was planted by Shubeal
Stearns ; and as a branch of the mother church, they emigrated to the
wilderness
and settled on Boon's creek. The church is now called Buffalo Ridge.
In 1781, one year after the settlement of most of the persons above
mentioned,
five or six churches having been established by the emigrants, they, for
their
mutual advantage and edification, concluded to meet together in conference
twice a year; this Conference, in a short time, they organized into a
temporary
Association, which they chose to place under the patronage and direction of
the Sandy Creek Association in North Carolina. To this body they made annual
returns of their proceedings, which they submitted for their inspection
and approbation. But the remoteness of their situation rendered this measure
so inconvenient that by the approbation of their North Carolina brethren,
they,
in 1780,' erected their body into a distinct and independent Association, by
the
name of Holston. This Association, at this time, consisted of the seven
following
churches, viz. : Kendrick's Creek, Bent Creek, Beaver Creek, Greasy
Cove, Cherokee, North Fork of Holston, and Lower French Broad. The ministers
belonging to it at this time, were Jonathan Mulky, Tidence Lane, Isaac
Barton, James Keel, William Murphy, John Frost, and Alexander Chambers.
A few of these ministers in a short time removed to other parts, but most of
them became permanently stationed in the country, and were diligent and
useful
laborers in this part of the vineyard.
My earliest McKinney/Chastain is Charles McKinney (1725-1798) married
Marianne Chastain born 1738 in VA.

I have some additional information to add that may be helpful.
I found the North Carolina Death Index Record for Minnie C. Shook. Born 25 Nov 1901 in Georgia, Died 29 Mar 1997 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. Her maiden name is listed as Chastine. She attended school through the 6th grade. She was listed as widowed, so Wade Shook was dead by this time but apparently she had never remarried.
I found Wade and Mennie C. Shook in the 1920 Census. They were living in the home of Wade's brother, Pleasant Shook in Wagener, Oconee, South Carolina. This record shows that Wade was born abt 1898 in NC and that his parents were both born in NC. It shows Minnie was born abt 1902 in GA and that both her parents were born in MS.
I found the record of a birth of Amanda Jane Webb born on 15 April 1943 in Macon County, NC. Her parents were listed as Ethel Chastine and Harold Webb. (I presume this is Minnie's sister and her husband - as you mentioned a sister named Ethel Webb.)
I think it is worth noting that in the only two records that contain the last name of these two sisters that the name is spelled Chastine. And also interesting that Minnie's parents are indicated as being from MS.
I looked for the parents/family of Minnie and Ethel in the census records but didn't find much that was interesting. If you happen to know anything more about her sister's dates of birth or death that might helpful as well - as sometimes siblings' names can help find the family records in the census. I wonder if her father's name (Lee) was a nickname.
If these clues don't lead you to her parents you can always write to the Social Security Office to obtain a copy of her application. That application will list her parent's names (including mother's maiden name)and because it should have been filled out by her personally there is no better source. Her social security number was 244300766 according to the Social Security Death Index.
You also could write to request a copy of her death certificate from the State of North Carolina. It too should have her parent's names listed (if whoever filled out her death certificate had the information.)
I hope this helps.
