I am not sure if I am one that you would be looking for. My mother Nelda Chastain as I understand is a descendant of Pierre Chastain. Her father is Norroy Chastain, and his ancestors can be traced back to John Chastain (born around 1790) I have been told that Pierre is the father/grandfather??? of John, but I am not sure. If I can be of any help, or you have any information that I might be interested in, please feel free to e-mail to eaglenest7(a)charter.net(Lynn Thomas)

Hi, Susan,
I had no idea you were in Astoria. I was born in Bend, lived in Oregon until
age 5. My dad was born in Roseburg, grew up around Eugene. My Reed relatives
are all over the place out there. The fact that my last name is Reed,
though, involves a Chastain connection.
Ellouise Chastain flew from Dallas to Walla Walla during WWII to visit her
brother, Charles, in the military hospital there. He had rheumatic fever,
had been ill for months and wasn't expected to live. She ended up staying
several months. A couple who owned a pharmacy near the hospital befriended
her and Charles because they, too, were named Chastain. No one could figure
out whether they were related, but they felt they were.
On the flight up from San Francisco, Ernest Reed, a sailor on leave, sat
down next to Ellouise. They corresponded for the rest of the war and got
married in Dallas on Dec. 15, 1945, then moved to Oregon. Their first child
was born on their fifth wedding anniversary -- me.
I used to know the pharmacist's first name, but as I type, it has flown out
of my senior brain -- something like Ivan, maybe. I know it's on the back of
a photograph Mother kept of them. I hope to be able, someday, to track his
lineage and see where it intersects with ours.
So sorry about your trials the last couple of weeks -- whew! Hang in, stay
as dry as you can. We'll all still be out here whenever the Chestnut Tree
arrives. Your situation trumps that! We just appreciate you for handling it.
Best wishes for a blessed Christmas and a wonderful 2008, Susan.

Subject: [CHASTAIN] January "Chestnut Tree"
Hello Chastain cousins!
For all of you who didn't catch it on the news, my area of the world
(Astoria, Oregon) was hit hard last week by two back to back storms that had
hurricane force winds up to 129 miles an hour. The storms started Sunday,
12/02, and kept right on battering us through Tuesday morning. We were lucky
and only out of power for a week. Our cable/Internet just came back. My
family is fine and no damage to home - just a lot of mess to clean up
outside. Because of this, the January issue is going to get to the printers
later than usual.
Sincerely,
Susan Slape-Hoysagk

There are a good many Chastains in Missouri. The largest persentage of them are in Southwest Missouri and the largest percentage of the Chastains in SW Missouri are descendants of Joseph Dekalb Chastain and Eliza Henrietta Neece of Union County Georgia. Of the 16 children said to be born to Joseph and Eliza Chastain 6 are known to have migrated to Christian and Stone Counties in SW Missouri between 1880 and 1893. They were:
Jefferson Davis Chastain - married Cora Ellen Melton
William McDonald Chastain - married 1). Martha King, 2). Alice Leonard
John Calvin Chastain - married Catherine Sarah King
James Thomas Chastain - married Mary Jane Offuit
Julius Caleb Chastain - married Margaret Elizabeth Rhodes (My Great Grandparents)
Julia Ann Chastain - married William Tarply Rhodes
In addition one nephew of Joseph Dekalb Chastain, John Joseph Chastain - married Julia Ann Rhodes migrated with this group. John Joseph was the son of Benjamin Chastain and Sarah Margaret Neece.
You may also notice that within the 8 couples mentioned above there are several sets of sisters who married into the Chastain family (King, Rhodes, Neece)
I have made it my goal to indentify all known descendants of Joseph Dekalb Chastain and Eliza Henrietta Neece in SW Missouri.
You can find an interactive descendancy register at:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=bateschastain&id=P257796...
All additions/comments/questions are welcomed. I am always interested in furthering the information.
Greg
