I have been trying for a long time to verify a commonly stated marriage of James Vest and Dinah Chastain. This appears in several Rootsweb listings regarding James Vest. An example is:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jcenright&id=I03111
James Vest's will was filed in Chesterfield Co, VA on Jan 6, 1795, and he lists his wife as "Diner". After James's death that same year, Stephen Chastain was named as guardian of James's son Raney (similar to a Chastain family name). So the Chastain connection is reasonable.
I have never been able to find any other reference to a Chastain named Diner or Dinah. I assume the name Diner is a variation of her real given name. It could also be that she was first married to a male Chastain.
I would sure appreciate any leads or ideas.

Hi William
It's me again ! I have a few more questions abt. our Chastain Trip. We
will spend a few days near Manakin
and Richmond but I would love to stay as near as possible to the actual
places they lived. We prefer B and B's but can be flexable.
Also could you please tell me if any of our Chastain's
came into Jamestown or not ? Just a few suggestions
for nice lodging would be helpful. Thanks Again Kay

It has aways been my understanding that the Editor welcomes items for the
Chestnut Tree, any time of the year. It doesn't need action by the
Executive Committee. Early issues of The Chestnut Tree contain many
articles of this nature. It makes for very interesting reading, and a
greater appreciation of the people we are "kin" to.

I photographed this gravestone in the Bluebonnet Cemetery - Peace Section, Colleyville, Tarrant Co., Texas. Feel free to use the picture for your personal records.
This is one of the 142,861 cemetery photos free at http://teafor2.com
I have a bit of information on the Dentons. They can be traced back to the
early to mid seventeenth century in this country. One of them is praised
for his preaching by Cotton Mather and credited with bringing the
Presbyterian denomination to the New World. The best of the living Dentons
that I can attach to the Chastains is Jeremiah, former Vietnam POW, Admiral
USN, Congressman, author of "When Hell was in Session," etc. Do a Google
search on him and see what shows up. There is a good Denton website that
includes some of the history, too.
My direct association is through Huldah Denton [b. 8/2/1805 - d. 5/5/1898].
At least these are the dates on her tombstone. She was still living with
her youngest son at the time of the 1900 census. Go figure. Her husband
was Mark Burrell [10/22/1806 - 1878], the same Mark Burrell that fathered
children by Nancy Chastain [birthdate in question, but I believe it to be
1820 according to the census records. Others say 1806, including her
tombstone], believed to be the daughter of William Chastain and Annie Motes
[Cherokee, daughter of Hogeny Motes?]. I have this William as the son of
Abner, son of Ten Shillings Bell. It's been a long time since I have looked
at all of this so don't bet the farm on anything!
Back to the Dentons. Huldah was the daughter of Samuel Denton (Jr.? III?)
and Elizabeth (Betsy) Chastain. It gets confusing here and I need to look
at it more carefully when time allows, but this Betsy is recorded as the
daughter of Ten Shillings Bell. Stay with me here - Samuel Denton was the
son of Samuel and Jemima (whose last name I don't have, perhaps one of you
has it). This Samuel was the son of John Denton and Sarah O'Dell. John was
the son of Jonas and Jane Seaman. Jonas was the son of yet another Samuel
(born about 1631) and Mary Smith. This Samuel was the son of Richard
Denton, Jr. This quotation is one I need to chase down: "The Rev. Richard
Denton graduated from Cambridge University in 1625 and became minister of
Coley Chapel. He migrated to Connecticut in 1632 with Governor John
Winthrop. He preached in Conn., Mass., and N.Y. He died in 1662. He left
five sons." His father was Richard Denton, Sr. of Worley, England.
Huldah Denton and Mark Burrell were my GGgrandparents, making Ten Shillings
Bell my 4thGreatgrandfather (with Mary O'Bryan).
I could go on and on with what may or may not be completely accurate, but
even tombstones get the dates screwed up. However, I have seen Huldah
Denton Burrell's Bible and one that was probably Mark Burrell's since it has
listed the children of Nancy Chastain as well as those of Huldah Denton. It
appears that there was a time that both families lived in close proximity to
one another. I have a picture of rascally old Mark, but none of Huldah.
The one passed around in the family as being Huldah was actually Nancy
Chastain, Mark's "very close friend" and neighbor.
Are you all very bored now?????
I don't really have a lot of time for this study right now, but I am saving
all the recent messages from the Chastain list and will sit down about
Christmas time and sort through it all. NOW - correct me where I'm wrong.
I'd love it!!!

Can anyone tell me about Nancy ? I have a paper I found some years ago a
will perhaps where it names Abe Powell in place of his wife Nancy. My
ancestor is an Abraham W.Powell born 1790 that married a Nancy Mulkey
but in Gilmer Co.Ga.I always find the Chastain children around him.It
has been speculation
that he married Nancy Chastain first and Nancy Mulkey 2nd.I know in
Powell Chapel Cem.of Morgan Co.Al.there are several Chastain's
buried.{James,Rebecca,Miles] This cemetery was originally a family
cemetery so it seems the Chastains were connected to Abe Powell in some
way.
Has anyone done research on this family? The name
shows up frequently in Chastain and Allen marriages.

I went back to papers that I haven't looked at in
almost 30 years. My connection to the Rev. Chastain
is through his son, John, _NOT_ Elizabeth (wife of
Samuel Denton).
Thank you Susan!
I have John Chastain,Jr. ("Blind John") and Jemima
Denton (b. 1770) as having a daughter named Elizabeth
(b. 1789) who married James Allen.
The above information came from "Chastain Kith and
Kin" by A. Farnsworth-Milligan, 1981.
If any of this is inaccurate, please don't hesitate to
let me know.
Thanks,

Hi Susan,
One of the sons of Elizabeth Chastain and James Allen
was named Samuel Denton Allen. (Other children were
John, Matilda, James, Nancy and Jennie).
I'd like to clarify this issue one way or another!
There was another Chastain family in the area who had
a daughter named Elizabeth who married a cousin of
James Allen, also named James.
A "family tree" done by my grandfather back in the
1930's shows his great-grandfather, James Allen, as
having married Elizabeth Chastain in 1805. My
grandfather was an accountant and a sort of "exacting"
type so I tend to believe what was shown on the tree
as fact. I remember hearing my grandfather speak of
John "Ten Shllling Bell" when I was a child.
That said, I'd like to have some other primary sources
to either validate his tree or disprove it.
Thanks for bringing this up, Susan. Now I have
another paper chase! LOL

According to "Pierre Chastain and His Descendants",
v.1, Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. John Chastain,
married Samuel Denton, Jr.

I am presently researching my Chastain line of William C. Chastain b. April 16,
1820 Hall Co., GA d. ???? m. Feb. 5, 1840 Hall Co., GA Nancy Mayfield b. 1824
Hall Co., GA d. Nov 19, 1883 Hall Co., GA 2nd m. Nov 27, 1883 Julia Ann
Chambers.
I have the Chastain books. I am interested in any information, leads, pointers,
family records, that others might provide as a guide for this research. (e.g.
it is kinda hard to look in the census if you do not even have a county and
state).
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to William Fenn's posting of this website

Manaken Episcopal Huguenot Church on Huguenot Road, Powhatan County, VA has the original octagon shaped church. It is only an hour from Richmond and there is a library on the site. Call first for hours. My family, Bellamy, home and farm is at the beginning of Robious/Huguenot Road. The Huguenot style home can be seen going north, right side of road, and there is a historical marker at the driveway. Try and visit the Historical Society and Library of VA. The VA Genealogy Society is near the historical society but the genealogy material is at the historical society. VA is rich in history, style, and beauty. Wish you much success and joy in your search. Marie in HI.
What things are there in VA. that are significant to the Chastain Family. I had planned to go to Manakin, is there anything there to see. Also Jamestown. Didn't the Chastains start out there ? If not where did they come in.?
What is the story about Pierre Jr. losing the homeplace to gambling debt ? Help me here I'm new at this, and from the queries I have read on Rweb. some of you know quite a bit.
And some of you are lucky enough to live around there. Are any of you going to the Chas. reunion ? I didn't get into genealogy till abt. 5 years ago, and I have been spending most of my time on my Knight family " that's Me" who married two sisters that we're Chas's. I have found the Chastain's to be much more interesting.
Thank you William for all your suggestions we will definately
check those out. Can't wait.
Thanks in advance for any help.
