I am new to this list and I am interested in the Susanna who was born in 1836 in Ky.
She married William A. Crutcher or Croucher in 1856 in Garrard Co, Ky.
Does anyone know who her parents are?
She died in 1919 in Grayson Co, Texas.
Thanks.

The fact that Violet was probably 1/32 Cherokee Indian was enough to classify her as "Cherokee by blood" on the Dawes Roll, but attitudes changed over time. As I said in my note about the 1910 census, I'm sure her father was also Gatred Chastain/Chastine and her mother was Rhoda Hall. Most states did not start keeping brith records until about 1920, give or take a couple of years. Good luck with your search.
I checked the Dawes Roll of native Amercans living in the Indian Territory and documented as Indians and found the following:
Card # M1813 (Cherokee living in Chelsea)
Gatred/Gatrad Chastain, enrolled as a parent (not Indian)
Rhoda Chastain, parent
Rholan Chastain, age 1, male, enrolled as 1/32 Indian (by blood)
Card # 2876
Gatred Chastain, not Indian, enrolled as parent
Rhoda, age 19, enrolled as 1/16 Indian (by blood)
Earnest, age 1, enrolled as 1/32 Indian (by blood)
Elvin, age 2, enrolled as 1/32 Indian (by blood).
These rolls were taken between 1898 and 1914 and should have included Jewell and Violet, but I didn't find them. Since Rhoda was their mother, they were at least 1/32 Cherokee by blood.
Other web sources show that Gatrad Chastain was born July 5, 1875 in Bentonville, Arkansas. His parents were John Chastain and Susan Dawson. Gatred died November 26, 1915. Rhoda's maiden name was Hall and she was born in Sugar Creek, Indian Territory on July 15 1881. They were married August 11, 1897. Dawes card 2876 showed William and Martha Hall enrolled as parents, so they are most likely Rhoda's mother and father. William was William Henry Harrison Hall, born about 1840 in Virginia. Martha was Martha Childress, born July 13, 1842 in Cowskin Prarie, Indian Territory. She must have been 1/8 Cherokee by blood for Rhoda to be 1/16.
The 1880 census shows that John (b 1838) and Susan (b 1845) were both born in Kentucky. They were living in the Liberty community of Linn County, Kansas in 1880 and had the following children:
James H born about 1866 in Kentucky
Edward, born about 1868 in Kentucky
Robert L, born about 1872 in Kentucky
Gatred, born in Colorado
Dora B born about 1878 in Kansas
John W, born April 1880 in Kansas
This suggests that the 1910 census data about Cassy Gat was an error and Gatred Chastain was still alive and living with his family at that time. I can understand how Gat Chastain became Cassy Gat.
I recommend you look for Gatred Chastain's burial in Rogers County, Oklahoma and Rhoda's marriage to Robert Kennedy in the same area between 1915 and 1920.

You and others have provided info. re Violet that states she is probably Cherokee Indian. The only record I have of her is in the 1930 census, Tulsa, Tulsa, OK, stating age as 21, married at age 17. One child, Benjamin G. b. ca 1928 OK.
This data states she is "white."
I have not located any information regarding Violet or her husband, Benjamin Guy SWEET after 1930, therefore, cannot confirm Violet as Indian until further research.
I appreciate your taking the time to look up information.
Hopefully, I can pursue this data.
I have tried to locate an OK birth record site online, without any luck. Wanted to find one for son, Benjamin G. SWEET.
May have to write.
Thanks again,
Revae

I went back to the June 18 1900 census of Township 26, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory and found Rhoda, an Indian, born July 1881 in Indian Territory, married to Gabe? Chastine, born July 1875 in Arkansas. They had been married for three years and had one son, Elvin, born June 1899 in Indian Territory. Gabe's father was born in Missouri and his mother in Arkansas. Rhoda's parents were born in Indian Territory. Gabe was White and Rhoda and Elvin were Indian (probably Cherokee). I'll check further, but it appears that Rhoda married Gabe? (name not certain; it's very difficult to read) about 1897. This doesn't match what was reported in 1910 when she was married to Cassey Gat for 13 years, but it has to be the same woman and eldest son, Elvin. Perhaps all of the children were Gabe's and the census taker in 1910 did not record the Chastine name. In any case, by 1920 Elvina and Ernest were out of the household (probably married). I'll see if I can find Gabe Chastine in!
Arkansas with his parents in 1880.

I'm not sure where the children got the name, Chastain, but the following family looks like your Violet and her parents in 1910:
Chelsea Township, Rogers County, Oklahoma
Cassey Gat, head of household, white, age 33, in his first marriage for 13 years, he and parents born in Tennessee, works as a teamster
Rhoda, wife, Indian, age 29, in her first marriage for 13, years, had 5 children, all five living, born in OK, parents born in GA
Elvin, son, age 12, Indian, born in OK
Ernest, son, age 9, Indian, born in OK
Rollin, son, age 6, Indian, born in OK
Jewel, daughter, age 4, Indian, born in OK
Violet, daughter, age 1 year 3 month, Indian, born in OK
Rhoda and her chidlren appeared in the household of Robert A. Kennedy in 1920, where Rhoda was his wife and they were his step children with the last name Chastine. Only Jewel, Violet and Rollin were still in the household. They were still in Chelsea in Rogers County.
Perhaps Rhoda was married for a while to a Chastine/Chastain after her marriage with Cassey Gat/Gar ended.

They can hopefully help you. I know that some of the older records are lost. The cemetery had fallen into bad shape at one time, but the memebership is growing and the cemetery is just beautiful now.

There is a family cemetery in Kansas City. MO. The name of is Palestine Cemetery. The land was donated by the Faure/Foree family. It is on the Santa Fe Trail. I am a member of the cemetery association. My family consist of the Chastain, Faure/Foree, Ragan along with a few other. This line of the Chastain descend from Pierre Chastain.
Does anyone know the route South that Pierre Chastain,
Jr. took after he gambled away the family's estate?
How did he decide where to relocate? Were there land
grants?
I am descended from Pierre, Jr. through John "Ten
Shilling Bell" Chastain of Pickens Co., SC.

It appears that this transaction may involve Mary Robinson Chastain, who married John Chastain (1743-1805) in 1798 and bore his three youngest children - Violet, William and Mary. This John's will did give land to his widow, Mary, and it was to go to his youngest son, William, upon her marriage or death. He had an older son, John Junior in about 1766 by his first wife Mary O'Bryan. If this is anyone's line, I have a scanned copy of the renunciation statement that I will share.
