Thanks,

There was a recently published Shumaker (Shoemaker, Schumacher) of Virginia book, in which Kim Shumaker Clark did an amazing job updating descendancy lines and adding stories, military records, and photos she received from people on the rootsweb list. She pre-ordered as many books as requested by those interested, and it ended up costing approx. $20 or $25 each (I can't recall which), the cost for printing and shipping. The book turned out to be over 500 pages, and included two distinct Shoemaker lines. I gave one to each of my sisters as gifts, and donated one to the Genealogy Department at the Public Library here in Cincy. What a cool thing.

I actually think that I might have it traced all the way to Pierre now. I would like to find more pictures or facts about my ancestors though. This is what I have for my ancestors. 1.Estienne Chastain, 2. Pierre Sr., 3. Pierre Jr.(Peter) 4. Rev. John Chastain, 5. Edward Brigand Chastain, 6. John C. Chastain, 7. Joseph DeKalb Chastain, 8. John Calvin Chastain, 9. Joseph Loranza Chastain, 10. Don Chastain, 11. Rick Chastain, 12. Jessica Chastain (me). It seems to me the list should be longer, but maybe not. Also, I plan on buying that book soon, but for the moment money is kind of limited. Thank you for replying and if anyone can help any further it would be appreciated.

Attached is the death certificate for William Hansford Chastain, born in Arkansas to Joseph C. and Charlotte Jane Chastain. He married Delia Lytal in Sebastian County, Arkansas 29 November 1893. W.H. Chastain died in Paris, Texas 11 May 1927.
The 1860 census of Pickens County, SC indicates that your John A. Chastain was born about 1821 in Pickens (actually it was the Old Pendleton District at that time) SC. His wife, Chaney, was born about 1835 in Pickens County. They had children Elizabeth A.J. (age 3) and John D.A. (age 5 months). Chaney Chastain, age 64 and female, lived with them. Their neighbors looks like John's brothers and possibly his mother (or mother-in-law, if his wife's maiden name was Chastain). They were: Tilman (age 35) and William (age 38) and Temperance (age 62). I'll check my Chatain family book when I get home this evening and see if I can link them with their ancestors back to Pierre.

The Chastains are a prolific family and have had more than 300 years to spread throughout the nation. It would really be helpful if researhers would include dates and places, in addition to names, when asking for assistance.

Problem: I cannot tell if any of this flood of questions is directed to me or not..they simply come from the rootsweb.
Anyone who is asking me a question please email me directly.
My husband and his many ancestors were born and raised in Thomas co.Ga. His mother gave me much information 40
years ago. Then I got a lot from gravestones and genealogical
records, and in the last ten years from the PierreChastain Family Association.
I have a photo of grave of John Albert Chastain, Hendry Cemetery,Thomas co. Ga.
He was born April 4 1857 in Thomas co.
died January 27, 1939 in Thomas Co.
Buried at Hendry (also called old Chastain Cemetery in some
books) in Thomas Co. Ga.
His father was John Martin Chastain and his mother
Mary Ann Carlson/Carlton. I have dates and photos for them too.
Beware there are at least 3 John Martin's in that county within 6 years of each other.

THANK YOU for looking that up. I am trying to find parents for an Eliza
Chastain (1876 -1955) who married a Franklin Lawrence HOWARD ( 1872-1930). They
lived in Pickens County and then moved to Greenville. I found Franklin's parents
who were Elias Cleveland Howard and wife Tarsia / Tarzey. I have no parents
for Elias Cleveland and no death date. I have checked the Pickens Probate
office and all the cemetery books but found nothing on Elias Howard or his wife.
On Eliza Chastain Howards death cert is states her parents are John and
Chaney Chastain BUT I do not think that the ones you listed ( which I have seen
before) are her parents. I cannot find Eliza on ANY census anywhere EXCEPT with
her husband. If she was born around 1876 she should be listed on the 1880
census.

Kelly,
Do you have a date of birth / death for John A. Chastain and any idea of
where he lived?
On page 290 of Vol. 1 John Albert Chastain of Thomas County, GA is married
to Netta Frances Chastain. I don't know if Netta's maiden name was
Chastain. I looked at other John A's in Vol. 1 (Albert, Abner, Andrew etc.)
and find this to be the only John whose wife is shown as Chastain.

Jessica,
Would the Peter (b. Virginia 1795) mentioned in your subject be the son of George Chastain and Rebecca Jane Staton? Their son Peter was born on 28 November 1795 in Franklin County, Virginia. He died on 24 February 1852 in Lewis Township, Clay County Indiana. He married Rebecca Stark in 1816.
This information is from page 91, Vol. 1 - Pierre Chastain and his Descendants - First 5 Generations.
Their are a number of men named Peter in the Chastain family so let me know if I found the correct one. I will say Volume 1 and 2 of the Pierre Chastain books are invaluable if you are researching the Chastain Family.
