John Vandevinder Chastain is not covered in the original "PIERRE CHASTAIN AND HIS DESCENDANTS, VOLUME 1" but he is in the "ERRATRA AND ADDENDA TO VOLUME 1". This is still in stock at $12.50 (I believe). He is listed as No. 8 of 9 children of Samuel Chastain4, James3, Peter2, Pierre Chastain1.
The children are listed on page 88 of the same book. If you want I will send you a scan of those two sheets.

Hi Joyce,
I am not sure what information you are seeking, but if you are looking for ancestors of your Amanda Chastain, they are listed in Pierre Chastain and His Descendents, Vol 2, page 191 and elsewhere. Amanda Jane Chastain born 1846 in Tennessee married William Ford Thomas and died 1890 in Missouri. Their eight children include Malissa Ann born 1870, married John Segel Dudley 1887, and died 1946.
Amanda is 6th generation Chastain. Her lineage is Andrew Tillman Chastain (5); Joseph (4); John (3); Peter Jr. (2), and Pierre, the immigrant from France. I am descended from John (3) throught another line.
I hope this is helpful!

I'll send you the scanned document and my transcription this evening. The information I have about John's children with his two wives came from the PCFA books, which I know have some erroneous data in them. I figured that Mary Robinson was most likely Robertson. Do you know if she married again after John Chastain died? The reason I ask is that her husband's will was very specific that the land was hers during her lifetime or widowhood, which seems to indicate that she would have lost title to it if she remarried. If she remarried before the dower renunciation, the land would have gone to William automatically.

On January 20, 1823 Mary Chastain, widow of John Chastain, signed a renunciation of dower that was recorded in the Pendleton District of South Carolina, although she actually resided at that time in St Claire County, Alabama. The land she signed away her interest in was 50 acres on Wooley Creek of the Saluda River, which John Chastain was living on at the time of his death. His provision for the land was that it go to his wife, Mary, during her lifetime or widowhood, then to their youngest son, William. The details of the document appear to allow William Chastain to sell the land to John Chastain Junior. William and Mary resided in Alabama at the time. John's residence was not stated, but appears to be South Carolina. The witnesses to the document were Peter Robertson and William Chastain. IN 1820 a John Chastain (spelled Chesteen n the census), age 16-26, and his wife, in the same age range, were recorded on page 45 of the Pendleton District census. On the same pag!
e were the Amos, Abram and Obediah Chastain (spelled Chesteen) families. I hope this information helps someone sort out their Chastain line.

Good Mornin' Robert,
I just realized that I had called Mary Jane Chastain by the name of
Elizabeth in my email of last nite. Boy.....that just goes to show that ya
shouldn't try to type when you waaaayyyy too tired like I was last nite (I
had been up since 3 a.m.) <VBG>
Anyhow.....thanks so much for all of the info. I'll use the names of the
children and their spouses and perhaps I'll be able to find someone
researching them that might know if Mary Jane returned to live with them
following her marriage to William.
BTW, Robert do you know if PCFA ever finished putting "Little Otter to Lost
River" on a CD? They talked about it years back and I've been standing on
one foot ever since. I'd love to have a copy of it.
Thanks again,
Dee
