I have a marriage license dated February 1830 in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, in which Elijah Chastain gives his permission for John Cox to marry Lydia. I am pretty sure that these are my ggggrandparents. If they are, then Lydia was born in March 1808 in Kentucky to parents born in Virginia. I know there is an Elijah Chastain who had three wives and at least twenty-one children--is this the same one?

Does anyone have any information on a woman named Dewey V Chastain that passed away a few years back. I have an aquaintance that is looking for some history on her.
Thanks
Heather
A trailing consonant in french is not pronounced. The ancient spelling of
the name in France was "Chastaing". Birth records show they began dropping
the "g" a couple of generations before they immigrated to the British
colonies. Pierre Chastain signed his will simply, "Chastaing". No other
evidence he ever used the ancient spelling.

Keep in mind that folks with French, English or any type of name can have
Melungeon blood from any of their ancestry or maternal lineages. Just
because the name Chastang is not a Melungeon Name of origin does not mean
the family is not Melungeon. I have McCalls who always said they had
Melungeon blood, but not from the McCall line, but the Jackson line that
married into the McCalls. Just my two cents worth.

Hello list
Can anyone send me documentation that William Jr., and James were in fact sons of William Chastain and Annie Motes? If Annie was born about 1805 then she would have only been barely over ten when James was born. Somehow dates are off a bit on someone. She would have only been 6 when William Jr. was born. Is it possible William was married prior to Annie and that William Jr and James were from a first marriage of William Sr's??? Yet the Pierre Chastain Family Association has William and Annie as the parents of both with their birthdates as, William, Nov 20, 1811 and James abt 1815. I wonder if Annie was actually older than the 1850 Census showed (45)? Or are the dates of birth of William Jr. and James off?
Thank you! Steve
