I am the great grandson of John Bunyan Chastain, who was the brother of
Elijah Webb Chastain. John Bunyan Chastain had a son Benjamin Chastain
that went to California in the 1850's. I have his picture and I think it
was taken with the Cliff House in the background.

Do you know dates of birth for John and Mary's children? Also, I read somewhere that they had a daughter named Nancy. Ever heard of her?

I have heard that Benjamin Chastain is buried at Antioch Cemetery in Fannin Co., GA, but I have not verified it. According to the Fannin Co. genweb site, www.ancestraldesigns.com/fannin/, there are two Antioch Cemeteries. Directions to one can be found at that site. I have not been able to find where John B. is buried, but there are one or two "Chastain" cemeteries in Fannin Co. that I would like to check out.

Estienne Chastain left the city of Bourges in 1572 following the St.
Bartholomew's day massacre of Huguenot Christians and moved his family
about 30 miles to the small village of Charost. That is the earliest
information we have about our Chastain ancestors. I would like to know
who were his parents (and who were his children) I would like to know if
they came from Languedoc. I think they did because some of the given
names in early records were occitan - not french
I have tried to get permission to view some of the LDS microfilm from
Bourges. The nearest LDS family history library tells me those films are
"restricted" - end of story. They will not say why or who I can contact
to see if an exception can be made. It's just a closed book. I have
contacted a couple of researchers in France who were recommended by a
cousin in England. But, naturally they want $ for their work. My funds
are limited.
My guess is that there are others who, like me, would like to know more
about our ancient ancestors. If we could get a group of about 40-50
people who would each make a small contribution to such an effort, we
could perhaps uncover some of the mystery.
My Bondurant Family Association [decendants of Jean Pierre Bondurant -
Manikin refugee from the second ship] have obtained extensive
information about Bondurant ancestry going back to the 13th century and
beyond. The records are there. All it takes is someone familiar with
French records and the time to look them up.
Anyone interested, please contact me at nobb(a)tenforward.com
Please Do Not Send Me Money.
I merely want to find out who is interested and if there are enough of
us to start a special interest group.

I beleive I have seen Nelson Chastain mentioned in the old research that
Frank Chastain's dad did. It is now in the Atlanta Archives. Maybe his
grandson Troy could put you in touch with Frank and Barb and they could
help. Someone told me Frank and Barb spend much of the year in Guatemala
these days. Their son Troy has a web page link on the PCFA page. Just
scroll down to it and email him.
You should also contact Jill Chastain of Birmingham. She is most likely
up on that branch.

I wonder if anyone reading these messages would be related to Nelson A. Chastain.
Nelson A. Chastain was married to Lula C. Dyar on 26 May 1884 in Fulton County Ga. He was born abt. 1885 and died in Atlanta on 13 Dec. 1921. He had 3 Children, Temple Laurie - b. 1897, Lulla (Lilla ?) - b. 1895 and a son whose name may have been Bradley or Charlie (Census Record I am using is blurred) b. 1887.
Nelson is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, GA with his wife, daughter Laurie and mother Jane B. Chastain. He lived at 387 West 10 Street in Atlanta in 1920.
If you would have any information please send me an email and post it here. My email address will be changing due to a change my ISP is doing.
Sandra,
I'm sorry I could find nothing on your family. I tried Chastain, chasteen &
Chastine spellings. If you know when & where your grandmother died, you
might send for her death certificate. It is possible that someone, at that
time, knew her parents names. You might also check the Soundex for the 1900
Census of Alabama to see if you can find the family. Hopefully, Estella was
still living at home. At least, you could find out date & place of birth for
parents.
Gerre Buland, PCFA Genealogist
Gerre,
My grandmother was illiterate so I am not sure of the information.
She said that his name was Jim Chastain, do not have her mothers name. He was
apparently arrested for murder and later was killed himself in Attala, Ala.
sometime in the late 1800's. He had 3 daughters, Margaret, Estella, Clara.
Estella was my grandmother and was born in 1888. Her mother was supposed to
have been Cherokee indian. Any help would be appreciated. My grandmother is
as far back as I can get.
Sandra Phillips
It is the concensus of most Chastain family researchers that 98% of the
Chastains (& Chastain descendants) are all descended from our immigrant
ancestor Pierre Chastain who arrived in Virginia in 1700.
If you will give the names, dates, locations of those in which you are
interested, I'll be glad to check the PCFA database to see if we have
anything on them.
