I have suggested to the president of the Chastain Family Association that they meet at our Manakin Huguenot Society headquarters right after our Assembly in Richmond in the middle of June 2002. They have been there before, and we really enjoyed them. But this was October 2000, so they may not not to repeat so soon.

Hi, Diana!
My great-great grandmother's headstone says that her birthdate was 3-10-1862 (I haven't seen the headstone; apparently all the headstones were destroyed by cattle, so poss. was 1867.....). She was born in Indiana. Is she a relative of yours? I would be very interested to know what you have. Thanks, Judy

I have Cintha A. Chastain b. 1857 in Indiana, and possibly her father was George W. Chastain b. 1832 in Washington Co., In. Her mother could be Melinda unknown.

My GGrandmother was Mary Elizabeth Chastain. She was born about 1845, according to the age she gave on the 1880 census for Macon Co., NC. She was born in SC or GA. She married Berry Elders in Rabun Co., GA, on 17 Dec 1866. ANY info about her would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea who her parents were or when she died, and no one in our family knows. Thanks!! Sharon Noble

Dear Chastain Cousins,
I wanted to let you all that my beloved Maxine went home to be with the Lord
this afternoon at 2:05 p.m. MST. As you know she had Alzheimer's Disease.
She had been in a nursing home since June 27th. She developed pneumonia and
that is what took her. It is a blessing and a relief. I know that she is
safe in the arms of Jesus and is at peace and has a clear mind. To all those
who have prayed for us, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It has
been a long struggle.

Hi Jim and list:
While doing some research at the Anderson Co., SC, library today, I
found the following information taken from The Anderson Intelligencer
newspaper, Anderson, South Carolina, Thursday, November 5, 1874.
HOMICIDE
On Friday evening last, as Mr. William Martin and Stephen Chastain,
jr., were on their way home from this place, the latter, after coming
to the road that turned in the direction of his house volunteered to
go home with Martin, as he was somewhat under the influence of liquor.
They proceeded on together quietly, until near the residence of Mr.
McLesky, when Martin dropped his hat in the road and began looking for
it. After finding it, he drew his pistol, and said to Chastain, ":You
called me a d--n liar, and I am going to shoot you." Chastain said to
him, "Bill, put up your pistol." Martin then fired, the ball striking
Chastain in the left breast, and passing through the upper lobe of the
left lung and lodging. Chastain then fell, and Martin fled. Mr.
McLesky heard the shot fired, came and found Chastain lying in the
road bleeding. He had him conveyed to his house only a short distance
off, where he remained until Sunday morning, when he was taken to his
father's, Mr. John Chastain. Medical attendance was called soon after
he was shot, but all to no purpose. He died on Monday at one o'clock
p. m. Martin is still at large, but his arrest will soon be made.
The Anderson Intelligencer, Thursday, November 12, 1874
The Governor has issued a proclamation offering a reward of two
hundred dollars for apprehension and delivery to any jailor in the
State of William M. Martin, whom it will be remembered shot and killed
Stephen Chastain, Jr., on the night of the 30th October last. Martin
is still at large, but his arrest is daily expected.
The Anderson Intelligencer, Thursday, November 19, 1874
Tribute of Respect
The following preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted by
Deep Creek Grange, at the regular meeting November 7th, 1874:
WHEREAS, It has been the will of our Heavenly Father, in his
inscrutable wisdom, to suffer to be removed by the hand of violence
our worthy brother, STEPHEN F. CHASTAIN; therefore
1. Resolved, That the members of Deep Creek Grange deeply feel and
deplore the loss of a brother, yet nevertheless, bow in humble
submission to the will of Him who doeth all things well.
2. That we tender our heartfelt sympathies to the sorrow-stricken
mother and mourning relatives of the deceased, imploring God to
sustain them in their sad bereavement.
3. That the family of the deceased be furnished with a copy of these
proceedings, and that a blank page in our Record Book be inscribed to
his memory.
4. That the members wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days,
and a copy of these resolutions be furnished the ANDERSON
INTELLIGENCER for publication.

My Chastain line beginning with Pierre is Pierre; Pierre, Jr.; John; Mary
Lavina Chastain; Benjamin Berry Chasteen; Mattie Lavina Chasteen St. John;
Betty Anne St. John Beebe; Catherine Beebe Carter.
My daughter, Kayla, is in 9th grade and is working on a project about her
ancestors. Does anyone have any interesting Chastain information (other than
what is in Volume I) such as stories about the family coming to the United
States, the immigration and/or citizenship process, any photos, etc.? I'm
hoping that she will enjoy working on this project and learn a lot about her
ancestors. I think it's so important to keep the next generation interested
in genealogy. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance to all the Chastains out there.

Looking for any info on my gr grandmother, Cynthia "Ann" Rodgers. Her maiden was Chastain. I have info she came from Indiana. She married Joseph Allen Rodgers and lived in OK and New Mexico.
A Rodgers relative gave me the name of a Billy Chastain who was doing genealogy on the Rodgers clan; think he must be a relative of Ann. He is possibly in the OK City, OK, area.
Thanks in advance: judy wood email: hyprincessdi(a)yahoo.com
Well what do you know, it's September already!
You may need to remind yourself to get the oil changed in the car, and
the air checked in the tires. Don't wait another minute to get that
reservation for a room and mail that check for the banquet, in case you
haven't by now.
In other words, get ready, set, go!
