Gerre. Thanks for your response. I think you misunderstood some of what I
said, and of course I very well may have some things wrong. First of all I
did not say that Abner married Annie Motes. That was William that married
Annie. Abner was Annie's father-in-law. I did have Abner married to a Nancy
Ann ??? (possible Sisson) who is the mother of William. I did also have in
my records that Abner married later to a Rachel Barnes and then again to a
Susan O'Kelly in 1828. I must have made a mistake there on the O'Kelly
marriage, as I thought my source was from the book "Pierre Chastain and His
Descendants", but must have misread something. Thanks for the correction. I
will make the change. Sometime when the opportunity presents itself I will
see aboutthe rolls in the National Archives. Steve

My gggrandmother Nancy Chastain was the daughter of Edward Brigand Chastain
and she married an O'Kelley and her twin sister also married his brother.
I have found no one from this line and I had hoped to, but after 4 years,
still no one.

Here is some information I have on abner Chastain in my book, maybe this will
help>
Abner Chastain, son of Rev. John and Mary (o'Bryan) Chastain was born
1764, probably in Buckingham County, Virginia. He married Rachel "Cassie"
Barnes, probably in North Carolina. He apparently was not present at the time
of his father's death in 1805. He is omitted in his father's will with the
statement, "I allow the rest of my children to have no part nor parcel of my
Estate more than they have Recd." These facts leads us to specualate that
Abner received the home place, or at least part of it, probably at the time
he married. This land is now in Sullivan County, Tennessee. We do find Abner
however, in Haywood County, North Carolina, in the 1810 census, along with
his brothers Edward and elijah.
children of Abner and Rachel (Barnes) Chastain:
1. Abner Chastain, Jr. born 1791; married Nancy Elzey
2. Benjamin Chastain, born 1793, married Nancy Hooper, 7 November 1812,
in South Carolina.
3. Edward Chastain, born 1795.
4. Jehu Chastain, born 1796
5. Mary Chastain, born 1797, married Elihu Cowart.
6. Margaret "Peggy" Chastain, bprn 1800, married William Smith
7. Naomi Chastain, born 1802; married Mr. Smith
8. Nancy Chastain, born 1804; married George Watkins
9. Annie Chastain, born 1806
10. John Marion Chastain, born 31 October 1813, married first, Drucilla
Barnes; second Hannah Massengale; third, Phoebe Adeline Kelly. He died after
1880. It has been reported that John Marion sired 27 children. He died in
Rabun County, Georgia.
I have just returned from LAURENS , S.C. the race for sheriffe there is hotly
contested. Capt. Rickey Chastain is very close to unseating 2 term sheriff
Jim Moore. does any one know him?

Some of the information you have is somewhat garbled. The Abner Chastain who
m. (1) Annie Motes (2) Rachel Barnes did NOT marry Susan O'Kelly. That Abner
was b. 1803 & was a son of Edward Brigand Chastain .
The Abner in whom you are interested was a son of Rev. John Chastain & his
1st wife, Mary O'Bryan.
I wish you luck on finding further information on Hogeny Motes. I just don't
believe there is any more available. You might try the National Archives.
There are a few earlier Indian Rolls than the Guion Miller roles - all Indian
names. I would be interested to know if you do find anything further. Keep
in touch.

My husband's line is off their son Edward Brigand.
My records show Rev John "Ten Shilling Bell" CHASTAIN had 2 wives.
One was Mary O'Bryan/O'Brian, they wed 1763 Buck Co., VA.,
and had 11 children.
The other wife was Mary Robinson, I don't have a wedding date, but I do
show they wed in Buck Co., VA., and had 3 children.
>From the birth dates of the children Mary O'Bryan/O'Brian would be the
1st wife.
If anyone would like anything else, not that I have much...<smile>

Hi,
Looking to connect with other descendants and relatives of William and Annie
(MOTES) CHASTAIN. William born abt 1795 Buncombe Co., NC died Abt. 1866,
unknown where. He is a son of Abner Chastain with his marriage to Nancy Ann
??? (possibly Sisson). Abner also later married Rachel BARNES and Susan
O'KELLY, and fathered other children. Annie MOTES, born abt 1805 to Hogeny
MOTES and Nancy Ann ???. Abner was the eldest son of Rev. John, "Ten
Shilling Bell" CHASTAIN and Mary ROBINSON. Hogeny very well may have been
full blooded Cherokee according to witness statements in the publication
"Cherokee by Blood." It is Hogeny's ancestry I am highly interested in.
Uncertainty of Anne's birthplace stems from conflicting info. Census
records indicate that both William CHASTAIN & Annie MOTES were born in South
Carolina. However in "Cherokee By Blood" we read that Annie was born in
Cherokee Co., NC. Hoping to meet and combine efforts and research findings
with other descendants and interested parties. Thanks, Steve Pearson

Steve I am a descendent of John Chastain also. I am descended through
Elijah, the 7th child of John. I have John's wife as Mary O'Bryan. Was he
married more than once? Do you have the lineage of Abner? I have nothing on
him except the birthplace of Buckingham, VA in 1764. I would love to have
more info on him. Susan Lane

Hi, Mary -
The Chastain family has connection to the Brian/Bryan/Briant family and
Gerard family but we do not have Jacques Briand and Jane Guerrant.
Our connection is as follows:
Pierre Chastain m. 2nd Anne Soblet
Anne Soblet was the daughter of Abraham Soblet and Susanne Brian
Susanne Brian was the daughter of Jacques Brian/Bryan/Briant and his wife
Susan Gerard (also Suzane Gerardin)
Jacques Brian/Bryan/Briant was the son of Pierre Brian and Marie Poupart
(Pouppartons)
Pierre Brian was the son of Guillaume Brian
Hope this helps in some way.
Loyce Coolidge
If you can give me a mailing address, I would be glad to include this query in
The Chestnut Tree. There are still more Chastains without internet access than
with.

My name is Debbey Chastain, daughter of Darrel and Reta (Speer) Chastain. I
am looking for information on the Ralph Chastain side of the Chastain
family. Ralph was my grandfather, he passed away in 1983. He was married to
Dorothy Jimmerson and worked for her father in the 1910's. They were
married the day she turned 18 which should have been in 1919 as she was born
in 1901. He is one of 12 children. I remember visiting 2 of his sisters,
Mary (married to Bus Redinger dcd) and Maggie/Margaret (married to Louie?).
They all lived in Oregon from the 1970's on. Mary and Maggie are still
alive to my knowledge. Does anyone have any information on this part of the
Chastain family? I know it is not very far back, but I am just starting and
family doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Any information would be greatly
appreciated. I am especially interested in finding out about any Indian
heritage. Thanks! Betterubell(a)aol.com

Hi -- I hope I am not posting to the wrong list. I do need help, but
not with a Chastain.
I am looking for descendants of Jane Guerrant and Jacques Briand
(Briant), m. 1758.
Possibly someone has Briand/Briant as a collateral name, or has the info
in their database.
Thanks, and appreciation for any help I can get in locating more info on
Jane Guerrant & Jacques Briand.

To all who responded to my offer:
Sorry I offered to download some Chastain pics and then had difficulty
getting my equipment ti act properly. Will download some just as soon
as I get the problems worked out, and pry my foot out of my mouth.

Lawrence,
There is a wonderful site at MyFamily.com where you are able to scan
