Thought I would pass this on to the list for some of you that are much more
interested in general Huguenot research than myself. If any of you have any
info for this fellow, will have to copy and paste his email address below.
The list has been awfully quite here lately, everyone must be working in the
vegetable garden!

My cousin will greatly appreciate your prayers. She is actually the daughter
of my first cousin Dr. Jess Moody. She's working with one of the telephone
companies out there and they are swamped just trying to keep telephone lines
working.
Hope you are both well.
Thanks for the personal note, Loyce. Although we don't get the personal notes on the news, the fire has been well covered by Fox ... which is the only news
channel. Hope your cousin is safe. How devastating it must be to have to gather "15 minutes worth" of your belongings and flee.. Our prayers are for that
entire region.

Dear Friends-
Here's the latest on the fire.
The winds have been worst today and many homes have been destroyed. So far,
there have been no human lives lost and we are very grateful for that. There
are over 1,000 firefighters trying to put out the fires which are
threatening to totally consume Los Alamos. Several horses were killed but,
for the most part, all the animals have been safely removed and taken to
local farms, the Santa Fe Fairground, and private homes.
The outpouring of support from New Mexico residents has been unbelievable.
Everyone is really pulling together to try to make the best of this
disaster.
The town of Espanola, just north of where I live, is currently being
voluntarily evacuated. The high school has been used as a shelter but the
smoke has filled the town and many residents have left. The National Guard,
all types of law enforcement and firefighters from everywhere fill the
roadways and it appears as though we are preparing for war.
The village below Los Alamos, White Rock, has been evacuated as well. People
are in shock and hardly know what to do with themselves. Most people are
given 15 minutes to pack their belongings before being forced to leave their
homes. On my way to work this morning, I was stuck in traffic because of all
the people leaving White Rock with their cars and trucks packed to the brim
with their children, animals and whatever belongings they could quickly
gather. Many have campers attached to the back of the vehicles.
We have been warned that if the winds shift slightly, we too will be forced
to evacuate due to the toxicity of the smoke. There is no danger of fire
near my home at this time but the smoke is really thick and the sun is only
a faint orange glow in the dark sky.
I went to work at US West this morning (the phone company) and you've never
seen so many people working so hard in your life. Our crew is pretty small
but we were installing new equipment as fast as we could so we could keep
the phones in Los Alamos working, (what's left of them). The phone company
building is still intact but much of the external equipment is lost to the
flames. One of our employees spent four hours on the roof of the Los Alamos
building running the garden hose in the event that the flames reached the
building. People don't think about the importance of communications at a
time like this but it is imperative for the firefighters and critical
personnel. Most of the people I work with were at the Santa Fe office all
night and all, except me(because I am a student employee), were informed
they were in for a long night again. US West sent their corporate jet to the
Santa Fe airport at 2 a.m. this morning to deliver the additional parts we
would need to complete the transfer of phone services from Los Alamos, White
Rock, Pojoaque and Nambe(where I live) to Santa Fe. I spent the day running
all the wiring from the Central Office to set up a phone bank at the Sweeney
Center in Santa. They are moving the Command Center for the fire there. It
was a grueling day.
If we are forced to evacuate tonight, it will be pretty rough. Between me
and my roommates, we have seven horses, twelve chickens, one rooster, two
geese, two ducks, one dog, one cat and a rabbit. There's just no way to get
them all out of here in 15 minutes.
Currently, over 20,000 acres have burned along with many homes and
businesses. The fire is heading for Abiquiu(pronounced Ab-i-cue) and the
Santa Clara Pueblo. If we are evacuated, I will be going to Glorieta to
stay at the cabin where it is safe and warm. Mom and Dad called me late
last night as they had just heard about the fire and were worried. They are
holding a revival in Jacksonville, TX (I think). Hard to remember since they
woke me out of dead sleep. They said they would try to call again tonight
but the phone circuits are all jammed up out here and it's hard to get
through.
We are all fine here but it's pretty stressful. I'll be back in Santa Fe
tomorrow to work at the phone company again. One of my roommates is a
teacher at Espanola High School so she's off work until further notice. My
other roommate teaches horseback riding lessons here at the house. All I
know is that it's going to be interesting around here for the next few days.
Just wanted to give you all the latest report. I'll try to keep you posted
unless they evacuate us from this area. If you don't hear from me tomorrow,
you'll know I had to leave without my computer.
Thanks for the prayers and support. Please keep it up. We need rain and for
the winds to die down. They were gusting up to 60 mph today in Los Alamos.
Peace,
Martha

page. If you have any problems with the link, or getting to GenForum, let me
know. I will be happy to help.

Lois is doing a fantastic job of trying to preserve our "family plot
cemeteries" in Indiana. I have followed her progress with pride. Thanks
Lois, I'll go to your listed website and do what you ask. I don't believe
that I have any relatives in that one, but that is beside the point - we have
to stop this stuff or we will lose a lot of our heritage and never even know
it. Johnson County has jumped on the builders as well - finally.
