Don't worry about it Gerald!!! One time, late at night, I wrote down my
lineage from "memory" (or lack of!!!!) and got it all mixed up!
Fortunately, several good cousins caught it before it mixed somebody else up
<smile>. Keep up the good work!

I have had this Marion C. for a long time and wondered who he belonged to:
1850 CENSUS OF MURRAY COUNTY GEORGIA. Marriages from Murray & Whitfield and
Bible records are noted.
Census No. 233 CHASTAIN, MARION 25 yrs b: GA(living w. R.H. & Martha
" Joseph 23 Ford) This was the Dalton area.
" Benjamin 22
" Jeptha m-20 (1860-71)p-87 J.M. to Matilda McHan.

Montgomery, Murray-Gordon line
BK A. Whitfield Co Marr.p.220, M.R.,to R.F.Treadwell
BK 1860-71 Murray p-213: Julia A. to Jas.R. Henderson
The Dalton-Spring Place area is where my Grandmother Annie Lands O'Neal's
family was from, and she was Mary Chastain Shelton's gr-Granddaughter.
I have a record showing James was the first son of Peter Chastain and
Mildred Archer and by his age could have fought in the Revolution. I do
not have his complete line but there is a younger one: INDEX DEED BOOKS
A-F 1785-1800 GREENVILLE COUNTY SC by Robertalee Lent, "Chastain, James
Bunkem Co NC sells 135 ac. no date. bought 50 ac 1797.
Hoke Co. 1850 NC also James Chastain, age 35 farmer b: SC
Lecianna age 38 SC
Tabitha C. 12 "
Elizabeth 8 "
Elmira 5 "

Enumerated with them on page 369, 11-5-1850, Dwelling #112:

(maybe a Rebecca?)
and page 357: George Barnes 61 farmer 300 Surrey
Nancy " 60 GA

Is this Nancy a Chastain? Hope this helps. Seems to be the only census
I've seen where people just gave their county to show the state.

Brenda, I believe that this is your family noted below:
1900 Federal Census of Floyd County, Georgia, Walton District, enumeration
dst 113, sheet 11, line 62.
Chastine, Marion W. head Feb 1868 Georgia
Chastine, Bettie wife Nov 1873 Georgia

Chastine, William D. son Aug 1895 Georgia
Chastine, Hiram A. son Sept 1897 Georgia
Chastine, Marion J. daug Apr 1900 Georgia
A lot of circumstance associated with this line. Marion W. or William
Marion noted as a son of David Aron Chastain from earlier census records.
David Aron given as son of Cooper B. Chastain, from 1850 census, tradition,
research of Kathy Major, Forth Worth TX. Cooper is regarded as a son of
David Chastain born about 1793 in Anderson County, no legal proof but pretty
good circumstance. David; prob Stephen-4, prob Rev. James-3, Peter, Jr.-2,
Pierre-1.
Would be interested in any further substantiating data that you could
provide.

Jan,
Sorry to intrude. I need some help and I noticed you have books!!!!(lucky
dog:)
I am trying to locate the origins of some Middletons who married Chastains
and Dentons. Their migration patterns are very close.
Descending line: Thomas Middleton , b 1775-ish, wife unkn. Possible
sibling, Anne, who was the second wife of Elijah Chastain, son of Rev John
Chastain and Mary O'Brian. Elijah's sister, Elizabeth, married Samuel
Denton Jr. Two of the Denton children, Jonas and Jemima, married two of
Thomas' children, John and Charity.
The Denton children and the Middleton children were born in SC, but moved to
Haywood Co, NC before moving on to GA. Elijah and Anne's children were born
in Haywood Co as well.
Can you help?I am stuck in this time zone.
Thanks,
Lynda

Jan , i was raised a short distance from this area. General Nathaniel Greene
fought the British between Abbeville and Greenwood S.C. at the battle of
Ninety Six.Greenwood was later named after general Green. I believe that
James also was a tailor while serving here with the Revolution.
Jan, i have agreat deal of inf .on the above. wills, indent papers on james.
settlement papers on john and family. Copies of all appear in Chastain kith
and kin by Mary Farnsworth. Does that help any?
Can anyone give me some background information on the Edgefield District in
South Carolina where my 5th Great Grandfather, Rene Chastain and his wife,
Judith (Martin) Gevedon lived?
Or anything I could add that is more personal than just where, when, etc.
Thanks in advance, Jan Lund
Carol,
I do not have access to census data except what is on line which is not
much, so mostly I am looking at numbers right now. She could be residing
with family, children or friends, and to me, is only showing up as a number
in a particular household instead of her name.
I would appreciate any help from you or the lists on census, if someone is
fortunate enough to have access.
Many, many thanks. The info was helpful.
Lynda

Middleton family origins
Posted by Lynda webster <lkwebster(a)mindspring.com> on Wed,
16 Feb 2000
Surname: Middleton, Denton, Chastain
Desperately need help locating ancestors, sibling, origins of John
Middleton, b abt 1797, possibly in SC, sister
Charity Middleton, b abt 1798. Both married Denton siblings, Jemima and
Jonas in Haywood co, NC 1815.
Jemima and Jonas are children of Samuel Denton, Jr. and Elizabeth
Chastain. Elizabeth Chastain's brother, Elijah
Chastain married Anna Middleton, b 1778 in TN (second of three wives).
Elizabeth and Elijah were children of
Rev. John Chastain and Mary O'Brian of the VA Chastains (Pierre, et
al). The Rev. John and (his brother) James
Chastain preached at the home of Charles Robertson in Sinking Crk
(Johnson City, TN)during the winter of 1775
and owned lands under the NC land grant in what is now the area of
upper east TN (Sullivan co, Washington
Co., etc). These families came from VA (Pendleton co, Washington co,
Dunmore co, Buckingham co,Frederick
Co VA,etc) migrated through TN and into western NC, SC (Pickens,
Pendleton , Anderson, etc. Co), GA, etc.
John's father was "possibly" Thomas Middleton. ANY assistance is
tremendously appreciated.
Thanks, Lynda

Dear lk,
I read your census. Thanks for doing such a good job. However, if Anna
were divorced in 1819 then she should be in the census of 1820 on, as Anna
Chastain. She prob. died between 1850-1860 Gilmer Co so she should be in
the 1850 census. There for sure, she will have to say her birthplace which
will get us into the right state and then since you were so smart to pick
out all the Middletons on the various census, that will narrow it down.
You mentioned Tenn but that census wasn't there and I would not worry about
it. I've never found anything in print that happened in TN. I wonder why
no one ever bothered to look her up including myself but I have done more
work on Sheltons than anything. Remember two of her & Elijah's children
namesly James Edward Chastain and (my) Mary Chastain married two of
Wm.Shelton's. Also my list of Anna's children says they were ALL born in
NC. With the charts I was given on the chart of Elijah & Catherine there
is a note: Res. Gilmer Co, GA 1850, page 399, line 33, subdiv. 33. Do you
have this census? I don't see how you can tell her parents from the census
after she married ca 1804 unless her neighbors include Middletons or she
moved in with one of her children. Neighbors are real important on the
census. Is there any reason why Anna Chastain ala Middleton wouldn't be in
one of the census of 1820 thru 1850? No matter who or where she lived she
should be in the census as Anna Chastain, Ann Chastain or Anna M. and so
on, if she was alive. Another proof of Anna's being is that Mary Chastain
& Joel Shelton moved to GA between 1840 & 1850. Maybe she wanted to be
near her Mother. She also had ten children 1-2 years apart.
You know I was in a hurry the other day but I spotted a cemetery record for
Hannah Chastain, d. 1849. I wish I could remember where I saw it.
I sent for the Texas Conf. Pens. record of Elijah Middleton, since his
father is prob the one who came to TX from NC. His widow Rhodie Ann also
filed for a pension. AS A RULE, these records include birth, marriage,
wife, death, and the witnesses usually include friends and family even if
they have to go to those friends and a J.P. in wherever the service was
rendered. Sometimes the first wife is deceased and there is a new one,
shock shock, (as happened in some Rigbys I have.) They were in Tyler Co
below Dallas. My Dalton Sheltons and Stones all moved & died there, many
in Kaufman Co: Geo. W. Shelton, John Stone, Marion Stone, Nancy Stone,
Nora Lands Hallmark. All their grands went into airline work. I believe
they were just a fast moving bunch! Aunt Matilda Stone (Shelton-Chastain)
line marr Robert Denman, lived in Tunnel Hill next to Dalton. They had 12
children, all stair-steps in the census. One contacted me from L.A. He
was in airline ticketing. Some even went into the movies. Aunt Matilda
was their family matriarch after Margaret died in the 1890's we think as
her tombstone was torn-up by the GA Highway Dept, moved and left unmarked,
as was Jasper Stone's. It is insufferable to me, unless I consider these
two people who were loved so dearly may be under the new highway to
Chattanooga, while their sons & daughters lie to the right of it, their
tombstones arranged like matching dominoes in scattered rows standing 10
-12inches apart.
There is a cemetery outside of Houston on I45 close to Spring that is
between the two freeway lanes and it is kept up with a cyclone fence around
it. I think GA is the worst as I've heard other on-going atrocities there.
Why would a church use a cemetery for a parking lot?
