Audri Badman-Chastain. I checked and you are on the list. It has been quite
lately. Maybe all of the Chastain people are watching the news instead.

There seems to be a lot of hate stuff going around. Some real and some not.
Much talk about viruses. If you are concerned, there are some suggestions in
this and some free downloads. Just be very careful about downloading
anything from someone you do not know. The list is very well protected.

Good Morning Ken. I really stirred it up. I asked Coast Guard Headquarters
historian, to answer my question. They were a part of the Navy during WW2
and transferred to Treasury in 1946 and to DOT in 1967.
<<The USCG joined DOT in 1967.
The service transferred to the USN in November of 1941 and returned to the
Treasury Department in 1946.
Please let me know if I may be of further assistance.

In a letter I posted, I made the statement that the Coast Guard is a part of
the Navy. That is the way I remember it during W.W.II, so my memory is
faulty. I have been corrected about that. The Coast Guard is a part of the
Department of Transportation and is now transferred to the Department of
Defense only in time of war. Thanks Ken. CARLOS THOMASON
Thanks, Cheryl. This is just what I wanted to find. I am sure that others
who are interested, will find this helpful, also. A virtual translation is
enough for a neophyte like me. CARLOS

The cut-off date to receive material for Vol. II of Pierre Chastain and His
Descendants is 1 October 1999.
Some of you may not realize that this volume will contain only the sixth
generation due to the volume of names that will appear in this book. In Vol.
I, there were 404 segments (individual sections). In Vol. II, there are at
least over 800. Some of these segments are very small but even so, that's
twice the number in the first five generations. Each succeeding generation
will be much larger.
The reason for a cut off date is because of the numerous changes/corrections/
additions in the "Errata and Addenda" section to Volume I which impact on the
numbering system of Volume II.
Please submit your documented material to Gerre Buland at your earliest
opportunity. If possible, I would also like a copy so I can have something
to proof by.

Dear group:
Last night we got Grandpa talking, It started with the Holliday side of the
family. Mom got a pen and paper and started making notes. When you can get
him going on family history one can get gems.
The only Chastain name I had previously was Adelia Wisdom Chastain Simmons,
who would be grandpa's maternal Grandmother. Then he mentioned Uncle Mike
Chastain, his wife (by name) and kids. It was so nice to get out the
Chastain book and look them up as he was speaking.
He also has a great story about Adelia asking him to hook up a lizzy coil to
her bed because people kept sitting on it and messing it up. She happened to
be the first one to sit on it and get the shock. He thought he was in
trouble then, but she said "Good work! Keep it up!"
I guess she was a character. Her daughter Florence Lillian Chastain Holliday
was my Ggrandmother. She lived to be 95, I was fortunate to live near her
all my life and she didn't die until I was an adult. She was a character,
too.

Yes, they WERE French.... <g>
That's why I was so surprised that it was described as inclusive;
this makes more sense! I wonder if it would be worth a clarification
on the list? Nowhere in the invitations for submissions have
I seen this point made (that is, that the new volume is only
one generation). Thanks again.

Dear Donn,
Our ancestors were quite prolific and by the sixth generation
down from
Pierre, there were thousands! Vol. II will be almost three times
as many
pages as Vol. I and will contain Generation VI only.

Hello~
This is my first post to your list. I'm looking for information that will
lead me to Thomas Godsey of the French Huguenot settlement in Mannikintown,
VA.
Thomas wrote his will in January 1748. It was witnessed by John Chastain and
Charles Amonett. The will was proved in Chesterfiled Co. VA in November
1749.
His widow was Mary ____.
Other associated surnames are Porter, Elam, Chappell, Flournoy and more.
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Mary

I tried, Marvin, to go back to the people you refer to, in the archives, but
couldn't find them by the subject. It would be helpful if we had a better
reference to those names, or the person who wrote the letter. Most of us
won't know who you are talking about. Also, Marvin, you misspelled a word in
your letter. Phony is spelled unproven, or sometimes spelled
unsubstantiated. TAKE CARE. CARLOS
Just because I want to do it, here is an excerpt from the letter that goes
out to all of the new subscribers.
<<The mission of this conference is getting acquainted with the family and
the discussion of the genealogy of the CHASTAIN family and any variant
spelling of the name. The CHASTAIN list is an arm of the PIERRE CHASTAIN

letters of general interest about your family and who you are searching for,
but that does not include flaming, rudeness and chain letters. Personal
letters should be directed to the individual. The computer cannot transmit
graphics, attachments or fancy stuff. Just plain text. We welcome you
aboard and want you to participate.>?

I want to say WELCOME to another cousin in France, Bernard Chastaing. He
sent me the address to his website, but I do not understand a word of it.

Hi Lee Ann
I don't have much, because our lines separate at Rev John Chastain/Mary
O'Bryan, but I think the missing wife of "Edward Brigand Chastain/?" is
Hannah Brown and they married in NC in 1787. I am not sure where the
info. came from. I don't have a reference noted. Maybe it will give
you a lead for more research.
