Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Each quarter we print about 550 copies of the Chestnut Tree. These go to
Chastains and Chastain descendants all over the USA (in fact all over
the world) Many of these people don't have E-mail. I monitor this list
and when I find an inquiry with a snail mail address, I put it in the
CT. The trouble is, very few people put their mailing address on
anything in the internet. There is no point in printing something if the
reader without internet access can't respond to it. Why not use this
free service? Some of those people know things you don't.

Looks like they believed in really speedy trials in those
days. Anyway, I don't want to embarass any cousins, but
surely Billy Moss is ours. Does anyone have his ancestry? I
don't have him listed at all. I hope this isn't too far
afield from core Chastain genealogy, but it's certainly of
historical interest. Thanks,

<< Regarding spelling variants........was told that one of my surnames was
probably Chastain/Chasteen/Chastane..........at one time. In my case the
name was Shastid and sometimes Shastied. >>
All persons born as a Shastid are descended from a William Chastain who was
farming in Greene Co, Kentucky in the late 1700s. Family tradition has it
that his father's name was John however it has yet to be proven. He evidently
was illiterate as his name was spelled by county officials on the tax rolls
from year to year in the usual misspellings of Chastain. He married Nancy
Elizabeth Greene on July 30, 1794 in Greene County, Kentucky. His name was
mispelled on the marriage bond as William Shasted. His descendants mainly
adopted this spelling, probably because of the bond spelling. Various
spellings including Shasteen, Chastine, Chasteen were used until the mid 1800s
when most started using the spelling Shastid. Their children were: John G.
Shastid, Nancy J. Shastid, William Shastid, Samuel Shastid (my great
grandfather), Mary H. Shastid, Elizabeth Shastid, Thomas Shastid, and Rachel
Shastid.
The Shastids moved from Greene Co, Kentucky to Washington Co, Tennessee around
1803. Later removed to Old New Salem, Illinois ca 1824. William Chastain
died there ca 1830 and the family became somewhat dispersed, some remaining in
Menard Co and Pike County, Illinois and the others moving to Madison County,
Arkansas. Regards, Jack Shastid

Does anyone know how to obtain one of the Pierre Chastain books. I have

disconnected in Columbia, SC. I would love to have one of the books since

It would be very helpful if, when any of you leave the list, you would
'address' the master computer. You need to have the word 'request' in the
address. If you send a letter to the subscribers of the list do it as this
one is addressed. If you want to make a request of the computer to
unsubscribe please send it to CHASTAIN-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
That word request is like magic, and the computer then knows what you want of
it.
And, I thank you very much. We have quite a bit to turnover. CARLOS

A recent roll call answer did have namesakes of "Leroy" and "John

This may be a little confusing in appearance to those of you
with straight-line descendancy -- but I'm triply descended
from Pierre Chastain and Anne Soblet through their grandson,
Oliver Sallé and his wife, Sarah Johnson. There'll naturally
be some repetition in this, but if I abbreviate anything,
it'll make sense only to me (and that's still only a
probable). So here goes, and I hope the browser-server combo
doesn't destroy the formatting. If all else fails, my
ancestor page is at:

The last name of Jesse, the Revolutionary soldier, was spelled Shatteen on his
war records. At his marriage it was spelled Shasteen. In Kentucky land
records and when he moved on to Gallatin Co., IL., his name was spelled
Shasteen. His brother James, also in the Revolution, spelled his name
variously Chastain and Chasteen. Jesse's son Samuel, who lived in Indiana,
always appears to have spelled it Chasteen, as did the family on down through
Samuel's son, Jesse V., and Jesse V.'s children, including Mary Jane Chasteen,
my great-grandmother, and the children and grandchildren of which I am aware
who carried the name. My problem with the lineage is learning which son of
Pierre's was the father of the original Jesse, no matter how the name was
spelled. There don't seem to be any records to show that relationship.
Anyone have information on that? Jean Pence
The name originally (from church records) was "Chastaing". In proper
French pronuciation, the ending "g" would be silent, hence it got
dropped along the way (apparently in France, allthough Pierre did sign
his will that way). "Ch" is sometimes pronounced like "Sh". But, I
cannot find where "ain" was pronounced like "een". That seems to be an
American twist, even though very common.
