I am aware that this in not proper and I promise not to do it again. Carlos
Thomason, I have an e-mail address for you regarding your Chastain line. I
have misplaced your e-mail.
There is now a direct descendant of William Henry Harrison Chastain online
that would be a big help in your research. Maybe you can help each other.
Please reply.
Thanks,
Darlene
Hi,
Thanks so much for news of Marlyn. I visited with her after Christmas
and she was making decisions reguarding her business affairs and funeral
arrangements, etc., but was concerned about her D A R application and
information for the upcoming book. Sure hope there is someone near that
will see that they are submitted. She has fought long and hard, with
courage and dignity.
I met Marlyn when she was in the area for a big Chastain Reunion at Bull
Shoals Lake. We both were meeting another person, to talk research, on
two different family lines, neither to do with Chastains. Our mutual
friend was late, so, after standing in the entry of Country Kitchen a
short while, we got acquainted and were seated. By the time the friend
got there, I had discovered why Marlyn was here. I casually mentioned
that my husband had Chastain ancestors, but that I hadn't gotten back
past Benton County, Missouri on them. She not only knew about my Jacob,
she told me just how he tied in and that he was from a proven line; also
inviting me to the reunion that weekend. We drove down, not expecting
to find out anything. Ha. My husband joined then as a lifetime
member. Then we made the pilgramage to Dr. Pierre's gravesite in
Virginia when the reunion was held there and we visited with her. She
stayed in our home last year when she was here. It has been a great
privilege to know Marlyn. She put years of research at my fingertips
and was tickled to pieces to do it. Please keep us posted concerning
her. I will miss her very much, already do; as we sometimes called or
corresponded when either of us wanted to clarify a fact. I also did a
little local research here at the Henry County Historical Society
Library for her. She knew her Chastain history!
Sincerely,
Joan S. Groff
I was saddened to hear about Marlyn's worsening health. She has been
such a stalwart of the PCFA. I've only known her since 1993, but have
been impressed by her good spirits in the face of adversity. I'll
remember her in my thoughts and prayers.

Below is a response to a query on the webpage concerning Lee Chastain
Claver:
Lee Chastain Claver was my great-great grandmother. Following is what I
know about her:
Lee Chastain was born April 29, 1822 in Bath County, Kentucky. She died
July 25, 1907 in Decatur County, Iowa. She married John L. Claver on July
22, 1844 in Putnam County, Indiana (his second marriage). John Claver was
born December 23, 1814 in Davie County, North Carolina. He died July 28,
1890 in Decatur County, Iowa. John and Lee are both buried in the Gammon
Cemetery in Decatur County, Iowa.
Children of Lee and John Claver were:
Elizabeth F. - born April 21, 1845
Florindah R. - born May 18, 1847, Putnam Co., Indiana
Eliza C. - born November 3, 1849
Clayretta - born August 9, 1852
Julianna - born January 25, 1855
Mary Lee - born November 21, 1859
Silas - born April 2, 1861
John - born January 20, 1863
Miles M. - born June 10, 1865
I note this list is somewhat different from your list of Lee's and John's
children. My list has come from documents in the Civil War pension
application file of William Smith, husband of Florindah, and from the 1850
U. S. Census of Putnam County, Indiana, as well as from the Censuses of
1860, 1870 and 1880 of Decatur County, Iowa. I also have a typed copy of a
very faded newspaper clipping of John Claver's obituary which states that
John and Lee moved from Indiana to Iowa in the fall of 1856; that John and
Lee had nine children, six girls and three boys; and that John's first wife
was named Elizabeth and she died in July 1843.
Florindah Claver and William Smith were my great grandparents. I have no
information about the other children of Lee and John Claver but I will
forward what I have on Florindah and William Smith if you are interested.
I believe that Lee Chastain's parents were Silas Chastain, born 1798 in
Buckingham County, Virginia and Nancy Ragland, born 1803 in Virginia.
Nancy died in 1861 and Silas in 1864, both in Putnam County, Indiana. The
1850 Census of Putnam County lists children of Silas and Nancy as:
Christiana - born 1827 in Kentucky
Elizabeth - born 1833 in Kentucky
John - born 1835 in Kentucky
William - born 1837 in Indiana
Julia - born 1841 in Indiana
You will note that Lee is not on this list. By the Census date (1850) Lee
was already married to John Claver and would not have been listed in her
father's household. However, in the 1830 Census of Bath County, Kentucky,
Silas Chastain's family includes one female in the 5-10 age bracket. Lee
was born April 29, 1822 and would have been 8 years old in 1830. I regret
I don't have more specific proof that Silas and Nancy were Lee's parents.
A biographical sketch of William Chastain published in a History of Putnam
County, IN gives a bit of information about his parents, Silas and Nancy,
and states that it was 1835 when they moved from Kentucky to Indiana and
that they raised 10 children, with William being the third youngest.
I apologize for going on for so long. I am new at genealogy and haven't
yet learned the best and briefest way to say things. If you would like me
to send you e-mail or typed copies of the obituary and biography
references, just let me know. My e-mail address is buchelt(a)pacific.net.
Best wishes. --Beth Buchelt
Here's a note I received from Bill and Jinny Chastain concerning the health
of Marlyn Schumann. Marlyn was the PCFA Treasurer for a number of years and
an avid researcher of Rev. Joseph and Nancy Young Chastain's descendants.
Marlyn has been ill with a form of cancer for some 14 years. I know she
would appreciate hearing from some of her long time acquaintances, and
please keep her in your thoughts and prayers:
Jimmy, we just got a call from a Marge Brooks who is Marlyn's cousin.
Marlyn is not doing well and has been placed in room 322 of a care
facility called the Brian Center - St. Andrews, 3514 Sidney, Columbia, SC
29210-4494. It seems that Marlyn is not coherent all the time.
Marge Brooks called me because she found my name in some of Marlyn's
papers. Can you get out something to let our membership know?
We do have a phone number: 803/798-9715 but it's not to her room ...
just to the facility.
If you want me to do anything further, get back to us via e-mail.
Bill and Jinny Chastain, Huntsville, TX.

Here's a recent query on the webpage:
Susan Chastain, daughter of Harmon and Lavilla Robbins Chastain, was born in
Scott County Indiana ca.1831. Susan married Jonathan Repp in Scott County
23 Jan 1851. They had one child that I am aware of, Pleasant Allen Repp,
born 21 Jan 1852, my gg grandfather.
Neither Susan nor Jonathan Repp are located on the 1860 census, but their
son Pleasant Allen Repp is living with his grandparents, Harmon and Lavilla
Chastain, on the 1860 census. Pleasant Allen Repp married Margaret Jane
Chastain, daughter of John Chastain and Elizabeth Spaulding.
My question is what happened to Susan and Jonathan Repp? I would also like
to know if there is anyone out there researching the descendants of Harmon
and Lavilla. It appears they had only daughters, and I have virtually no
information on these daughters of Harmon and Lavilla. It appears the oldest
(?) daughter, Nancy, married Nathaniel Law. What happened to Susan,
Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Emily? Did Harmon and Lavilla have any other
children? Can anyone help with this family?
Many thanks,
Denise O'Donnell

Well Hi Again Jimmie,
I goofed when I signed the reply about your letter concerning Marlyn Schuman
and used my middle name which I have used for friends and acquaintenances in
place of my first name which I have always used for family and old
friends.........just so you know that PigGal is "Teekeela".
Cheers,
Cousin Teekeela
Hi Jimmy,
I talked to Marlyn just before Christmas (just before I went out of town for
the holiday..........she was most concerned about:
1) getting copies and proof of her linage she had recently proofed to
Gerri for PCFA records;
2) she was also working with someone from DAR to get her membership
application finished and am not sure she was able to.
I had told her I would come up and help her after Christmas but the weather
turned very nasty and I wasn't able to make it up to see her.......being a
liflong Floridan I do not know how to cope with snowy conditions. Also, my
niece came to live with me to go to school (college level) in Gainesville
(FL). I never got back to Marlyn and have been on the verge to call her to
make arrangements for another time.......but winter just won't quit.
We had a nice long talk in Dec. and she was very resigned to and ready to quit
the long battle........"I'm tired and ready to go", she told me and I told her
how much I had enjoyed knowing her and that she had fought the battle well,
much better than I could or would have. I will call her cousin, Marge Brooks,
if anyone knows her phone number and I will check the weather and if any way
possible I will go see her and try to do what I can for her as far as her
geneaolgy records go as it was most important to her........unless someone
else is taking care of that for her.
Cheers,
Ann

This Peter Chastain (and Rebecca Stark) is mine, and I have a copy of
the census sheet in front of me at this moment. I believe the "a" is
simply unclosed -- a sloppy writer, probably -- although I agree it
looks like a "u." The "57" you read for Rebecca is actually 51 -- she
was born in 1799. Take a look at the other sevens and ones on the sheet
and you will see the difference.
Hi Chastains!
This may be old news to most of you but...recently I was visiting in the
South-western part of NC and got some pictures of the following tombstones. I
can give fairly accurate directions to them as well.
If you're interested, please e-mail me! I'm listing them the way they read on
the tombstone, but without all extra info. for time's sake. Sorry it's so
long, but I wanted to get everybody in there!
