Thanks Peggy, for the Edward Earl Chasteen info. He was a friend. He
gave me the Gertrude Dodson info. I understand he was in possession of a
family Bible you might want to document at an appropriate time.

Re #15 Unplaced Chastains. Yes, Mary Jane Chasteen is indeed the daughter of
Jesse V. Chasteen, but not the 1st daughter. Mary Jane was my
great-grandmother. The 1st child of Jesse V. Chasteen and Jane Wise was
Charles B. born 1839 IN, the 2nd Margaret F. born 1840 IN, 3rd Sarah A. born
1841, 4th my great-grandmother, 5th Harvey born 1846, 6th Nancy born 1848 IN,
and last John, born after 1850 presumably IN. My great-grandmother Mary Jane
married Thomas Reynolds Conley and they moved to Iowa. Contact me if you
need any further information. I have pictures of my great-great-grandparents
Jesse and Jane Chasteen, and my great-grandparents, Mary Jane and Thomas
Conley.
To All,
It couldn't happen at a worse time, but it did - Our Email died - and
wiped out all our messages. We have requested a new disk. It was slow
in coming. When it arrived, it was for a newer model CPU. In order to
get on the line we installed a relative's disk. Again, something wiped
out the unread messages.
If you sent me a message within the past two weeks - please repeat.

I do not know who set up the CHASTEEN list. Someone did, and after a while,
abandoned it and it is being supervised by a member of the Rootsweb volunteer
staff. An orphan list is one that is left without a sponsor. Do you want to
adopt it? CARLOS THOMASON
The Chasteen genealogy list has been orphaned. Anyone interested in adopting
it? I do not know anything about it but if you are interested, let me know.

Just ran across a new website for the DENTON family. There are so many in
our group who have Chastain-Denton connections, I thought they might be
interested.
This site starts with the Rev. Richard Denton who came to America in 1635.
URL is: www.acun.com/dentons/ I found this on the Rootsweb Review,
Missing Links, vol. 4, No.50

Hi Peggy,
Hope your holidays are going fine, and all your folks are in good
health. Once again I write to enlist your help.
I have been looking over some of Gertrude McClain Dodson's writing and
while it is not perfectly accurate, (ie. Chastains came from Ireland),
she has uncovered a little more detail than some others such as full
names, birth orders and the oral verification that John B. did indeed
have older children born around 1840 (the date of my GG Grandpa
Allen'birth. I have verification on this from other sources.
She has also caught the fact that the border and district issuses
surrounding Abbeville/ Anderson may very well have caused the will of
John B. Chastain's father John to have been listed in Anderson. She does
state that the old border passed along the edge of what shw calls the
the "plantation".
I want to contact her and listen to or read any records she made with
the older folks she interviewed.
Because of the correctness of the locale (near old Centereville
district) and the names of neighbors in the vicinity,I am now inclined
to believe my GG Grandfather Allen Chastain was indeed the son of John
B.Chastain and Elizabeth and that he is one of the unenumerated older
children born just befroe Margaret and six years before F. Garvin
Chasteen.
Another strong tie in is that she has picked up on the changed of
spelling from Chastain to Chasteen in about 1850 and reflects it inthe
names she enumerates. My family has stuck to the Chasteen spelling. She
also has the info correct that some of the brothers (sons of John B.
Chastain) went to Georgia. My Uncles and my father verify this in our
family.(Of course GA inst far is it!).
Well I can't prove much yet, but I believe I am on the correct trail.
The help I need is to contact Mrs. McClain Dodson if she is living and
meet with her before the treasure mine on info she gathered is lost.
Do you have current address and phone number for her or the person with
the information she gathered?
I have also been in touch with a Phillip Chastain who seems to know
about the unknown children of John B and Elizabeth of Anderson.
Did you refer him to me?
Thanks.
Your Cousin,
Howard Porter Chasteen
PS the McClain Dodson material I have is for the graveside services she
organized in 1983 for F. Garvin Chasteen. It has some Cox photos and
history attached to a Chastain Family History. There are also more info
sheets on Francis Chastain (Goodman),an article titled
"A Salute to The Life of a Confederate Soldier, F. Garvin Chasteen", A
copy of a newspaper article about the services at Asbury Clark dated Oct
19, 1983, and Family Group Records for John Chastain (Old Ninety-Six)
and his decendants.I think the biggest shortcoming of the material is
that Mrs. Cox simply did not know about Pierre Chastain or how the first
Chastains arrived in SC. I believe she guessed Ireland based on
inaccurate oral traditions.
I can forgive that.
