Hi Bob L. and others,
As you know Allen Chastain was my GGGrandfather who died in the Civil
War. Two additions/corrections to the listing. It is Martha Chasteen
Hutcheson(sic) that is buried in the old mill cemetery adjacent to the
Welcome SC Baptist church cemetery. Allen's body never came home.
The most important correction is that my Allen was not on the will
(1837), of John Chastain of Abbeville, SC, ( he was not old enough), but
it may have been his father "Allen" (if that was his father's name). It
has recently come to my attention that many of the wills and probate
records of the old Abbeville district actually related to Anderson
residents. It is now a strong possibility that John Chastain (probated
"Abbeville, 1837", was at onetime a resident of Pendleton.
I believe this is a very important riddle to solve not only for me but
many others stranded in the quagmire of Pendleton/Pickens/Anderson lost
links. I am quite sure the trail back beyond Allen exists as he married
Martha who lived very near several Chastain families in the area. I am
certain Jim Chesteen and Gerald Chastain are just as interested as I am
in solving this one!
Thanks for your diligent work and continued faithfulness to the chore
before you.
Your Cousin in-law Howard Chasteen
PS The invite still stands for you and Maxine!

Ada's first child of the marriage was "Minnie" born 1880 in Ga. I have been

1880 census was only soundexed for family's with children. Minnie was born
after the census I guess. William Newton's death certificate says "name of

initials in the area that their children were born. My initial information
on Ada and Newt's children comes from a handwritten statement from their son
William Frederick Chastain when he applied for social security benefits,
he had to get it notorized that this was his ancestry to the best of his

This is mine. She AMANDA WALRAVEN CHASTAIN is the wife of John Alfred
Chastain who is the son of Benjamin CHASTAIN and Ruth PRATHER of Gordon Co,
GA. Benjamin was born SC ~~ 1824 and is one of the group that shows up in
Gordon Co in 1850 and is definitely UNPLACED. I have traced the PRATHER line
back to the 1400's but have been unsuccessful with Benjamin CHASTAIN for a
number of years. Any help out there? I have data/info on Benjamin/Ruth and
their descendants if any one is interested and will be happy to share.

Dear Mrs. Buland and Chastains,
I'm not sure exactly what a verification is but I found Abner Chastain in
Murray Co. GA in the 1850 census. This is where my Mary Chastain Shelton
and her family lived; moved from Haywood Co. NC and daughter marr. into
Stones.
>From a "History of Whitfield County", pp. 175-183, Thos. T. Christain p.
176, Abraham Chastain, p.177, Thos. C. Christain p. 179, Abner Chastain, p.
182. Title of this chapter is Census of Murray Co. 1850, because Whitfield
became part of Murray between 1850-1860.
I have found Confederate records at the Georgia Archives years ago for Alec
Chastain including special duty when called on by President Jefferson Davis
and for Abraham Chastain. (Both enlisted in neighboring Gordon Co.) The
book by Tolvah Whitehead on "Murray Co. Georgia" lists them. Neither is in
my line but I was studying familiar names in nearby areas to mine. Frank
Ellison called me one night about a Haywood Co. NC book I had about
Chastains, but he did not mention Murray Co. GA.
There must have been a BIG migration of my ancestors and their families to
Murray about 1840 for the Bounty Land warrants. This was the last one I
believe.
Cousin,
Carol
The only Hazel I have found in the Chastains was my mother, Hazel Mae
Chastain Jelf Nauman b. Apr 28, 1904, St. Louis, Mo. d. 1992 Ingram, TX,
creamated. I am, of course, far from done with my research and others
could easily have existed.
She was the dau. of George and Alice Chastain of Indianapolis, IN. She
had one sister, Dorothy Irene, and two brothers, George Thomas and Allen
Marshall.
To Whom It May Concern,
Wewoka, is not in McIntosh County, it is located in Seminole County in

forwarded this to the Chastain rootsweb list, and there are lots of wonderful
people out there who may be able to help you.

I am currently enrolled in Historical Geography, and I have an assignment
for a research project: how my family history ties into historical
geography. I am e-mailing you in hopes to find out if there are any stories
of the Chastain's, especially concerning topics such as: traveling along one
of the "national roads"-the Wilderness Road or the National Road; how they
came to live where they did, etc.
Do you know of anyone I could contact for this information, or do you know
anything yourself?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

20-30. They were not on the 1840 Census for this county. When Frank Ellison
sent me this family, he had no documentation for the name of the wife or of
the children. He was trying to tie up some loose ends and said that he
believed "it could be this way."
Message #9. Polly Dixon
Polly, I have already identified the early Chastains in the Wautauga
Settlement of East Tennessee as Rev. John & Rev. James Chastain [see Vol. 99,
Issue 202 of the Chastain list]
No, they are not the ancestors of Elizabeth "Lib" Chastain of McMinnville,
TN. Her ancestors were John chastain & Mary elizabeth "Polly" (Bottom)
Chastain. They were from Virginia & traveled first to Warren co., KY, then
show up on the 1820 Census of Warren Co., TN.
Gerre Buland
Audri:
Since Worth S. Ray, author of TENNESSEE COUSINS, didn't give any first
names for the Chastains he mentioned on p. 12, it would be difficult to
know just who they were, unless some of the subscribers to the list are
descendants of those Wataugan Chastains and can identify them.
Note to Gerre: Some of their (possible ?) descendants were/are members
of the PCFA. Could these Wataugan Chastains be ancestors of Elizabeth
who lived in McMinnville, Tennessee and was PCFA president in 1993?
Another possibility could be a Chastain/Witt and/or Chastain/Tefeteller
connection, both of whom settled in Knox and Blount County, TN.
The Chastain name does not appear in Max Dixon's little book, THE
WATAUGANS, first published in 1976 by the Tennessee American Revolution
Bicentennial Commission, and reprinted in 1989 by The Overmountain
Press, Johnson City, TN. This book traces briefly the Wataugans from the
first settler, William Bean, who cleared land and built a cabin on
Boone's Creek in 1768 and moved his family from Virginia in 1769 to the
lower Watauga. The Watauga Association gave rise to the short-lived
"State of Franklin," and in 1796, to the State of Tennessee.

Polly,
I would be very interested in your opinion when you receive the books. Thanks Anita Bradford

Dear Jo Autrey;
Just thought I would run it by you to let you know that I do have a willie,
but not sure if it be the same one that lives in North Carolina, although it
would be cool if it were, that makes a fact of being connected to the family
tree.
Let me know I also have these names that you can check into to find out if
they are recorded with the rest of the ones you have okay thanks.

Does anyone recognize these couples? . If you have any connections to
these families, please let me know. I have the "original" certificate which
was unclaimed by the family and now I have it where it can be shared with
anyone who is interested instead of just lying hidden in a box somewhere.
