Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Someone sent me a message right after I posted my general letter to the list
and all that came through was the header. Name looks like Strick something.
Please do it again as I didn't get your message. CARLOS
CARLOS says: The CHASTAIN list has been getting quite a bit of strange mail
lately and because we have made a lot of restrictions to cut out porno and
advertising, anything that is the least bit off the standard is blocked by
Rootsweb and referred for approval before it is allowed on the list. I don't
know what to do about it, except to say to you that it would be helpful if you
would stick to straight data as much as possible when you post a letter. I
sure don't mean to discourage the use of the list, and most of the questioned
postings are from outside. I guess I could lift some of the restrictions but
you would be surprised what comes on the list as we are a shortcut to a large
audience. There are a lot of weird people in this world today and they all
seem to have computers looking for a market for their product. CARLOS

Dear Janice,
A couple of years ago, we reprinted all of Cameron Allen's articles and placed
them under one cover. This booklet is available from the Association for
$5.00. The price of our book is $29.95. Both of these are listed under
PUBLICATIONS on the PCFA Home page on the Net, wth instructions for ordering..
One way to solve the probelm of accessing this page easily is to place the URL
on "My Favorite Places." This is an AOL feature but your server probably has
a similiar feature.
Gerre
Years ago, I copied the 1963 article Cameron Allen wrote about the CHASTAIN
family. I see by Gerre Buland's recent post that there is another article
dated 1989 (guessing at all these dates but pretty close). How does one get
a copy of this article for their records and, also, is is possible to
include the PCFA website on every Rootsweb list so we could access it
easily? How much is the cost of "The First Five Generations"? I don't mean
to ask for the moon but I work full time and spend more time on this
genealogy than I care to admit. Any "shortcuts" would be appreciated!!!
THANKS! Janice Chastain Lund

Am seeking info re: the parents of Mary Chastain, b. 10 July 1797, m.
Alfred Nicholson (b. 17 Apr 1797). I assume that this Mary of north Ga was
the grand daughter of Rev. John Chastain, but I don't know which son of his
she comes from. I've ruled out Elijah, but there was several other brothers
of Elijah that Mary could have come from. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. This info is for Patricia Parham, a newly found cousin of

Chuck,
I wanted to respond to your lineage that was posted and to the forward from
Charles Ballard. First, I want to clarify that The Pierre Chastain Family
Association is not in the business of "denying the existence" of any
families that have Chastain connections, we only ask for source material for
documentation, legal records that directly relate relationships or
circumstantial evidence to support claims where the direct evidence is
lacking. Our genealogist will simply not accept the notation of a list of
names or lineages in any printed material if that publication does not cite
supporting sources for the relationships given. PCFA will be greatly
interested in obtaining documentation from any of the 25 or so texts that
report the lineage of John Francis Chastain, but not just the name of the
text or author, are there marriage records, where are the marriage records
located, baptismal records, birth and death records, circumstantial evidence
that could link or provide a basis for a relationship, immigration records,
property transactions, where the research was undertaken, who did the
research, etc..
So, it's not a matter of denying the existence of certain relationships that
have been published, the effort is one of proof!! I would personally love to
have sources as those mentioned above concerning the line of John Francis
Chastain!!
As to your lineage, it appears that you are a direct descendant of Pierre
Chastain if you have from the sixth generation down in order. But, Dr.
Pierre Chastain who arrived in Virginia on the ship Mary and Ann with other
Huguenot settlers was not the son of John Francis Chastain. Dr. Cameron
Allen did extensive research in the European Archives and found
documentation through the legal records there of Pierre's parentage
(Estienne Chastain and Jeanne Laurent), his siblings, and his first wife
(Susanne Renaud). Our Pierre was not married to the infamous Magdalaine de
la Rochefaucald, his second wife was Anne Soblet, and third was Mary
Magdalene Trabue, the widow of Antoine Trabue.
Also, the lineage you related reported that James Chastain born circa 1740
was the husband of Mary O'Bryan. This is incorrect, James Chastain born
circa 1740 was the Reverend James Chastain, son of Peter Chastain, Jr, and
his wife or wives' name(s) are unknown to us. James' brother, the Reverend
John Chastain was married to Mary O'Bryan.
Great documentation (sources noted!!) on Pierre's ancestry can be found in
"The Chastain Families of Manakin Town in Virginia and Their Origin Abroad"
and "Pierre Chastain Revisited", available for order on the PCFA website.
You might also be interested in "Pierre Chastain and His Descendants, The
First Five Generations", also available for order on the webpage, for
documentation of his descendants down through the children of the fifth
generation.
I hope that this will be of help to you and others who are having to sort
through so much misinformation concerning Pierre Chastain that is still out
there floating around!!
Jimmy
Hi Chuck,
Pleased to meet you. I'm not a genealogist, having gotten almost all my
info from Broderbund and the internet, so none of it is proved by me.
However, My database has Elizabeth Ann Chastain as my 7th great grandaunt.
Regards,
Chuck

Dear Emma,
This incorrect account of a Chastain family was first published by Dr. P. M.
Agee in the AGEE FAMILY published about 1933. This was in the General
Addenda, p. 330. He also says that "Much effort has been made to confirm the
above in France to no avail. The effort will continue."
Then in 1982, this account was reprinted in THE AGEE REGISTER by Louis N. Agee
with the same memo that this had never been confirmed. This is the exact way
the the children were listed.
Elizabeth Ann Chastain m. Dr. Joseph Bondurant
Mary Ann Chastain m. Daniel Isaac Fore
Judith Chastain m. Anthony Agee
Charles Reno Chastain, came to Virginia
Frances Jane Chastain m. James Francis Bryant
Capt. Peter James Chastain, to Virginia
The only two items that have some truth in them is that there was a Charles
Chastain who came to Virginia. I have no middle name for him.
"Capt. Peter James Chastain, came to Virginia." This must mean our
Pierre/Peter Chastain who also came to Virginia in 1700. As to the rank -
Capt. and middle name James - I have no idea where that came from.
In an article written by Cameron Allen, F.A.S.G., "Pierre Chastain Revisited"
published first in "The American Genealogist" 1989; reprinted Oct. 1990 in
"The Chestnut Tree", Mr. Allen found the baptismal records for our Pierre
Chastain's family. His parents were indeed Estienne Chastain and Suzanne
Renaud/Renault, etc. He had no sister named Judith. They came from Charost,
Prov. of Berri, France.
Geraldine Buland, PCFA Genealogist
This came from Tim Pierce, one of the senior system administrators at
RootsWeb. You may have not been affected, but just in case you wonder what is
going on I send it to you. CARLOS
Our main list server, lists.rootsweb.com, has been down since this
morning. Brian Leverich is presently hard at work installing a
new disk and preparing to reinstall the operating system. Once
that's done, Karen Isaacson and I will reinstall the mailing list
software and run some tests to make sure that everything is
operating smoothly.
As long as the system is not working, we're also going to try to
take advantage of this down time by preparing a new, faster server
for that machine, which is woefully underpowered for the amount of
mail that passes through it. Brian will begin building that
server while Karen and I get the old one back on the air.
We expect to have the server running again by midnight (U.S. East
Coast time) and hope to have the backlogged mail cleared out by
Sunday morning. Thankfully, we don't believe that any mail has
been lost (only delayed), and all of the archives appear to be
intact.>
My Chastain roots go back to Judith CHASTAIN b. 1654 in Nantes, France, who
married Antoine Francois AGEE b. abt 1639. Genealogy from the Agee line
states that her father was John Francis CHASTAIN b. 1612 in France and her
mother was Frances RENAULT b. 1607, France, the dau. of Charles and Frances
Jane.
I have been unable to connect John Francis CHASTAIN to any other Chastains.
Does anyone know anything further about him and his daughter, Judith?
Emma
