There weren't too many Chastains who served in the Rev. War. We know about
James & Jesse who served from Virginia; Peter who served from SC. DAR has
approved Patriotic Service for Rev. John Chastain. Seems he sold the Army a
side of beef or something.

We were just wondering if there is compiled information on any Chastains or
their relatives in the Revolutionary War? Or an online sources for soldiers
in that war?
Thanks

On the Scott Co., AR USGenWeb page,
(http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/scott.htm) there is a listing for R.L.
POLK & CO.'S ARKANSAS STATE GAZETTEER AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY FOR 1884.
Under the settlement of Barber, there is "Hampton & Chastain,
blacksmiths" listed. Does anyone know which Chastain this refers to?
My Quin F. Chastain lived in the area, so it may have been him. He was
listed in both the 1870 and 1880 Scott Co. censuses. He died in 1882.

I spend Friday at the State Archives. I am not a Chasteen (I am helping a
friend find there ancestors) but I did come across a lot of info on the
Chasteen's in Rockcastle and Madison County, KY. If anyone has Chasteen's
from these counties I will gladly share the info I found. It tied about 4
generations together for my friend.

Okay, thanks for looking. Mattle Chastain and John Dudley did have a
daughter named Myrtle but that could have been a popular name then.
Let me try a different route. Is anyone searching Chastain who may have
moved to Texas around 1870-80?
If so, do you have a Martha/Mattie?
Thanks for your help.

Still looking for information on William Chastain who lived in Greene County,
Kentucky in the late 1790s. Anyone who runs across anything on a William born
ca 1773, please let me know. He married Nancy Greene and his name later was
corrupted to Shastid. Thanks, Jack Shastid

My great great grandmother was named Martha Chasteen (tain). It was such
a common name, I don't believe she is the same person as that sought by
Don Griffis.
She had two sons by Allen Chasteen, the first, Hardin Andrew Chasteen
born about late June 1860, the second Pinkney Chastain, b. 1864. Don, If
your Mattie was from the TN,GA,SC corners area, she could be related but
once again, I don't think so.
I am wandering if anyone is doing research in the Pendleton District of
SC at the present time. I know there must be a key "stone" unturned
there. There is so much disconnected information. With the loss of
Frank Ellison, I'm not aware of any organized effort in SC. Has anyone
ever ran a newspaper add requesting info from Chastains still living
there. I have encountered so many families there that have old info and
are not interested in geneaology. Maybe we could shake something loose
in an old Bible or record. I keep hoping!
I am still searching for information on the parents of Allen Chastain,
Mattie's son. who died in the Civil war in VA.. I did not find new info
in the Confederate soldiers records in Greenville SC. He was there, but
no mention of his parents. It frustrates to dig further in the census
and similar records, but there may be yet another will, deed or other
legal paper to shed some light on the subject. Strong oral tradition in
my family says Allen died at the Petersburg Blowup.
Help! Marv, you can print this or part of it as a query if you want.

I see lots of inquiries for Chastain ancestors on this list. I'm sure
some of these inquiries are not getting answers. I would like to point
out that THE CHESTNUT TREE reaches quite a few who are not on this
list.(we print about 550 copies) If you dont' get a satisfactory answer
to you question, send it to me and note that it has been on the internet
and you have not gotten a satisfactory answer. We have not had many
inquiries lately in the CT and I think it is because most of them are
getting anwered faster by this list and that's fine. But - - if you
don't find out what you want, let me put it out to all the CT readers.

Hi all,
Thanks Robert and Marv, and to the others who responded. This is what I
think we've got re: censuses. Robert's is the strictly correct French
definition. But Marv's right, also. In some French-American communities I
think the census taker used fils to designate "the younger" (as opposed to
the older) and in some rare cases that might have meant brothers or
grandsons or even uncles, but mainly it pertained to a father/son.
Karen
Recently, Karen Kueteman asked the meaning of 'fils'. She had apparently gotten an incorrect definition using a computer translation program. I replied to her directly, but perhaps it's a matter of interest to the group at large. Here's what my Cassell's dictionary says:
Fils means son. Plural is also fils. Cassell's does not give brother as a meaning.
Fille means daughter. Plural is filles.
Fil means wire or thread (think 'filament.')
Frere means brother.
Hope this helps someone.
Robert Chastain Smythe
Hi, Larry,
Would you tell me in which state John Robert Chastain was born? I tried to
find him in the 1850 Census of Missouri and Kentucky. Could not find. So
many of the Chastains in Benton Co., MO came from Kentucky. Of course, since
he was born 8 Jun 1850, he could have been missed by the census taker.
Usually they started June 1st.
Have you checked the 1860 Census for Benton Co., MO? Let me know what you
have done.
I did check the PCFA database but did not find your family.

Help! Cousins on the list, some of you have researched documents in French,
haven't you? One of the gals transcribing a Louisiana census came across
the following: Pierre Bergaron (fils). When she ran it through an online
translator, it told her fils meant wire. Doesn't it mean something like
child, son, younger, junior?
