Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Am sending this out just in case I am not the only one that did not know it:
The following is from a Minnesota Genealogical Newsletter. "In the lower left
corner of most old deeds you will find two to four witnesses. The first one is
always from the husband's side, the next two from the wife's side. That is to
protect her one-half dower rights under the law. Nothing you will ever use
will give greater clues to maiden names".

Hi Carlos
I reacted too fast to the first message and deleted it immediately
without checking the address. If there is a pattern to the messages or
if they both are from the same source, you can easily filter the
messages specifically without limiting the list to subscribers only.
On the other hand, if you do use filters, and each new source has to be
dealt with using a unique filter. This could be more trouble than it is
worth.
What is the downside of limiting the list to subscribers? We may loose
no benefits. I agree we try this for a while and see if anyone
complains.

TedRoC: I agree with what you are saying as far as AOL goes, but this stuff
is coming from all over. I would say that very few originate with AOL. Many
of the ones we are getting now are coming from Amsterdam. They use a
different address nearly every time. I haven't heard of any specific
incidence where AOL has won any battles. Rootsweb is doing a good job of
blocking, not solving , the problem e-mails. I received three blocked
messages to my lists this morning, and all of them were porno. They use such
tricky language, and the central computer cannot identify them for what they
are, many times. I just want to close the door on them if I can. The internet
is an open forum, and I cannot solve the problem anyway. CARLOS
WOW!! I got messages. The concensus seems to be to close the door and let
the big guys take care of the problems. And, I am glad. I don't want to mess
with it anyway. Thanks for your reponse. CARLOS
Carlos,
Going to the poster won't work in a lot of instances because I've tried that
and I get a return message from Daemon with the usual spiel about not being
able to send to the supposed person who sent it. AOL seems to have a way to
reach these people.
Carlos,
I forward all pornographic mail to TOSSpam(a)aol.com. AOL has brought a number
of suits against this type of stuff. They are trying to monitor and stop what
I call cyberspace prostitution. Let the big guys handle it.
no BS this is the real THING free for a week!

As Always with our mailing to be removed from our list please reply and put remove in the subject line you will need to make sure only the word remove is in that line since all removes are handled by a robot anything else in the subsject or body will not be read by a human and will result in you not being removed

I have changed the program to allow only subscribers to post messages. If
this continues I can and will direct the central computer to send every
subscriber to me for approval.
EMMALEE; I am told that the big problem with porno postings is that the
internet is a wide open field and that there is little they can do except to
go to that poster and say, "please don't do it." There doesn't seem to be
anyway anyone can deny use of the internet. If it persists, I shall simply
close the list to non-subscribers which doesn't really solve the problem, as
anyone can subscribe, post their message and unsubscribe. Thanks for your
comment. CARLOS
AOL told me to FORWARD trash like that, Carlos. Just go to the 'To:' box and
type in:
ToSspam
I already have done that but I don't suppose it would hurt if everyone would
do it.
This is a first for me and I do not know for sure how to easily stop mail of
any kind, except to close our list to any mail except from subscribers. If it
continues I suppose I should do just that, but I hate to do it unless it is
necessary. If anyone has a suggestion please tell me, by personal mail.

At present, RootsWeb hosts more than 2,700 Websites and 3,600
mailing lists. RootsWeb now has a dozen servers and five T1s
worth of bandwidth, and handles more than 1,300,000 Web hits and
3,000,000 pieces of e-mail on a typical day. RootsWeb expects to
be adding several more main servers and a sixth (and possibly
seventh) T1 within the next few weeks.
Carlos,
I'm by no means a pro about this stuff, but if we can't send attachments for
a while, I don't think it is that seriously limiting. A big file, whether
it's a gedcom or text with graphics takes a while to download, and I think
that's what rootsweb is trying to do, is save everyone on the list time. If
we have something big to send it is usually for the focus of one or two
people, so it can be sent private e-mail until rootsweb installs the
software that allows each list owner to reject the feature that rejects
attachments and/or html.

Hi Carlos and List
Does this mean I cannot attach a file or document? We limit what we can
exchange if it has to be all in text. A MSWord document can have
internal graphics and tables which is not true with text documents. I
would think we would like to attach files occasionly.
Is this what we want?

Hi All!
I've added several related gedcoms to the Denton Family Website
(http://www.acun.com/dentons). It is on the page of down-loadable
gedcom files. They are: Denton, Baker, Moore, Plumlee, Chastain, Hunt,
O'Dell, Cooper, French, Shipman, and Huff.
If you have any Dentons in your family, hopefully they will show
up here. You might enjoy visiting the site anyway, as I've added a lot
of information that you might find interesting, as well as a few pages
of old pictures, some known people, some unknown.
Any corrections and/or additions to the gedcom information would
be greatly appreciated!
Blessings!
Sue Montgomery-Cook
