Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Another query. I've written to Billie in the past and she did not provide
any documentation for the marriage of Edward and Leah, I don't know where
she extracted this from. It is fairly well documented that the Edward
Chesteen of both the 1810 and 1820 Federal Census of Haywood Co, NC is
Edward Brigand Chastain, son of Rev. John Chastain, his wife was Hannah
Brown and they were reported to have had 16 children but only 15 have been
verified. A Naomi does not appear among their children and I don't know of
another Edward Chastain of age to be her father. I'm at a loss on the
James Chesteen as well.

I have Edward Chesteen in Hawood Co NC in 1820 that m a Leah,& had dau
Naomi Chestine b 1799 Richmond Co NC. She m Solomon RUTH from Abbeyville
SC. There was also a James Chesteen in the 1820 Hawood NC census that was
younger than my Edward. That is the only evidence I have on my Edward.

Since we've had several new subscribers inquiring about Judith Chastain,
thought I would re-post an earlier message on this subject posted by Gerre.
And welcome to the new subscribers.
Message #6 from Tyne Call
Dear Tyna,
To the best of my knowledge, the family of John Francis Chastain and
Frances Jane Reno was first printed in the Agee Family by Dr. P.M. Agee
about 1933 with this notation, "Memo: Much effort has been make to confirm
the above in France to no avail. The effort will continue." This same
Chastain family was reprinted in The Agee Register by Louis M. Agee (1982)
with the same notation.
In 50 years they have not been able to verify this - doesn't this make you
a little suspicious? According to the Agee books the children of this
couple line up thusly:
Elizabeth Ann Chastain m. Dr. Joseph Bondurant
Mary Ann Chastain m. Daniel Isaac Fore
Judith Chastain m. Anythony Agee
Charles Reno Chastain, came to Virginia
Frances Jane Chastain m. James Francis Bryant
Capt. Peter James Chastain, came to Virginia
As far as I know, there was only one Pierre/Peter Chastain who came to
Virginia and that was our Pierre b. 1659, Charost, Prov. of Berri, France
and his parents were Estienne Chastain and Jeanne Laurent. His brothers
and sister were Jacques, Anne, Jeanne, Jean, and Marie. [Refs: "Pierre
Chastain Revisited" an article by Cameron Allen, F.A.S.G. first published
in "The American Genealogist" July 1989; reprinted in "The Chestnut Tree"
Oct. 1990.
This in now available, along with three earlier articles about the early
Chastain family by Cameron Allen, under one cover. The price is $5.00 and
can be ordered from the PCFA Librarians, Herschel and Virgie Chastain, 312
Knight Road, Sumrall MS 39482.

Carlos, Thanks for the clarification. I really enjoy hearing the research,
genealogy and family related questions, answers, and exchanges. Now, I
admit that I don't read all of a message if I can see that it isn't
something I'm interested in or need. But, if I don't want to read it, I can
make my own decision and push the delete. I really like having the option
to read or not(I have a little trouble with censorship).
I'll say again, for many years I have been a member of PCFA. My work won't
let me attend reunions often. The Chastain Mailing list has made me feel a
part of the organization for the first time. I want to get to know "the
family". I want to get to know others researching CHASTAIN, also, and
welcome their presence on the list. I do hope the "do want to reads" and
the "don't want to reads" can figure out how to co-exist pleasantly, or at
least peacefully. The words for the future may be "acceptance" and
"tolerance" Peace and Love To ALL!!! Neta Jane Doris

If any of you have anything on these lines please contact Suzanne. I did
relate that Estienne (Stephen) Chastain's daughter by wife Martha Dupuy,
Marie Magdeline Chastain did marry James Cocke in VA in 1742 but could not
find any reference to the Phillipe family in connection with this
Chastain/Cocke line. Please advise, and copy any replies back to the list.

Jimmy I contacted you before looking for an elusive grandmother, Susanne
Phillipe.
I now think I may have been looking in the wrong branch (as had others for
the last 75-80 years). I need a contact with someone who has researched
the very early days of VA with Chastain- Phillipe and possibly COCKE or
COOKE intermarriages.
I've spent years looking through a Coleman line, but now think it may be
the COOKE or GIBBS line that married into the VA Huguenot
families....children of both carry Chastain and Phillipe as middle
names...there has to be a connection SOMEWHERE!! Most of these people were
born before 1750, but in 1775 my grandmother was born in SC to Zacharias
Gibbs and Frances Coleman and named Susanne Phillipe Gibbs. Her sister was
named Martha Phillipe Gibbs. Back in VA cousins carried Chastain as a
middle name.

Here's another, I was not able to make any comments on this line. I ya'll have any data, please post a copy back to the list as well.

Looking for information on Thomas Delozier listed in the Huguenots
Society Founders of Manakin as being outside of Manakin VA. any thing
you have or can get would be much appreciated.
I think that I may have not been really clear about the statement concerning
the letters posted to the list and the responses. I was probably too emphatic.
Several people have responded to me saying that they really want to hear the
response, unless, it is of a personal nature and has nothing to do with the
family. So let's go with this. If a letter is posted and you want to comment
on it or ask questions about it, do it by addressing your response to the
list, unless your comments are strictly personal and you feel that you do not
want then to go to all of the members. Remember that 'Reply to' takes your
letter only to the author of the letter, and to respond to the list you need
to address the list. I really appreciate the comments of those who have been
in touch about this. CARLOS
Just an update on Gerre, went to see her today, she is doing some better and
will probably be in rehab sometime this week. She is very weak and said to
tell everyone she appreciates the concern. As soon as I find out where she is
in rehab I will let everyone know.

I am new to the list and have just received some information that Judith
Chastain's (that m Anthony Age'/Agee) were John Francis Chastain and Frances
Jane Reno/ Regnault.
Is your Pierre Chastain the same as Judith's brother whose name was Pierre
James Chastain?
Thanks... Carolyn
I would like to point out something to you, and give you a reason for it. I
have found that munging the 'Reply to' to take responses back to the entire
list is not desirable in that it creates undesired traffic. Most times when
you respond to someone's posting it is personal and the entire list is not
interested so we set up 'Reply to' to go to the author of the posting. If
you put a definitive 'subject' in your mail, people can look at that and
decide whether they are interested in what you say. And, if you are
responding to someone's posting and you feel that your response is of general
interest to the entire list then you have to address it to the list. CARLOS
Dear Liz Miller,l-miller(a)tamu.edu
Thank you for your kind words. I have enjoyed being part of the Chastain
discussions, although as a listening part of many. I'm in Kansas, where are
you? Isn't tamu TX A&M? I have another "cousin" there from the FILES
Family.
My Chastain line is Pierre, Pierre Jr, John Ten Shilling Bell, Elijah,
Elisha, James Maxwell, Pernete B., Jack Cavender, Neta Jane Doris. What is
your line?

Dear Mr. / Mrs. / Ms. Coolidege
Online messages can be misunderstood. It is natural to make personal
assumptions of others, if unwise. When subscribing to this list a couple
weeks ago, I did so from the Rootsweb site. This is what is listed
there:
CHASTAIN-L -- A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of
information regarding the CHASTAIN surname and variations (e.g.,
Castine, Chastaine, Chasteen, Chasten, Chastine, Chesteen, Shasteen,
Shastid, Shastine) in any place and at any time.
As you see, nowhere is there a reference to this being an "online
members' group" of the PCFA. Any opinion of mine thus far has been
stated unaware of the facts. I now see why this list is unique among
others. Thank you, Mr. / Mrs. /Ms. Coolidege, for confirming my
suspicions.
Best regards,
Carol Middleton
I don't know why I think so, but some of you may be interested to know
something about the Rootsweb program that gives us the capability we
have. The enormity of the program just boggles the mind. There are some
terrific volunteers around. Dr. Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson are
co-sponsors that keeps us online. When they need help to buy something
that they do not have money in the kitty for they ask the lists owners to
chip in. Volunteers all around operate segments. February was an
incredible month. El Nino storms repeatedly caused power losses.
Batteries and a small generator kept us online even though the power was
off for days. There are 29,372,613 Web files in some 2488 Websites. And
in those websites there are 3050 mailing lists like ours. They shipped
some 2,933,982 pieces of mail every day in February for those 3,050
mailing lists. Now go back to what you were doing. I just thought I
would give you something to chew on while you were staring at that
monitor. CARLOS

I think you have some good ideas and I don't know why these ideas can't be
incorporated into what Carlos has come up with. I don't interpret Carlos'
idea of a "board" as anything except an advisory group to help others.
Exchanging ideas and stories, etc. is another way of helping - not trying to
bind.
Right now, our on-line members are a young group and this CHASTAIN-L thing is
a way of reaching everyone. If someone needs help, it would be much better to
have a few people who are knowledgable about the association, the ancestors
involved, and the background to answer questions. Right now, our genealogist
Gerre Buland is in the hospital and if I can help in any way possible I would
like to be able to help people who want questions answered.
I have edited four genealogical books including: Avilla Farnsworth-Milligan's
first book, Gene Cook's Little Otter to Lost River, and Pierre Chastain and
His Descendants - Vol. I and I'm currently working on Vol. II. If I can help
anyone until Gerre Buland gets back on her feet, I'm willing to do so.
I would also encourage any and all of you to send me stories and data and
information that can go into our archives. This information will be passed on
to Gerre Buland and to Bob Leishman our historian.
Hi - Carol,
I understand what you are saying but I also understand what Carlos is trying
to achieve. I think Carlos' idea is a good one and the web is the place to
use his idea.
You say Carlos is trying to "jump start" but it's a lot more than that. In
every organization 99.9% of the people want to sit back and have others do the
work for them. I think people on line are more interested in doing, sharing,
moving forward, and participating. Carlos is using the members who are on
line to get this sharing moving in the right direction, wanting 10 people to
act as advisors to answer questions to help those who need help. I have been
in this association most of the years it has been in existence and believe me
I know what Carlos is trying to do is very important.
Every organization should be as lucky as ours is to have people willing to
help. Every organization needs young people to keep the ideas coming in to
keep the association a viable one. We need all the help we can get any time
we can get it.
Personally, I think Carlos is on the right track. We need new people, new
ideas, new research, new material, and new inclinations to keep us growing and
improving.
Loyce Coolidge
To Carol Middleton and Robert Smythe: This is just great. You have
just done what is expected of members of an advisory board. I say amen to
what each of you have said and will strive to carry out your
suggestions. You do have a Moderator. That's me. I am the list owner.
I set it up and I will run it. If I could just depend on you to jump in
there from time to time with suggestions we wouldn't need an advisory
board. You can depend on me to jump in there if a problem arises. I
have two other lists and am on an Advisory Board for Australia. I think
that, if you had the title, you would be more apt to make suggestions.
'Nuff said, I suppose. i LOVE YOU ALL. CARLOS

To all -
I think Carol Middleton has it right. What's needed is a moderator, not a board or committee. Furthermore, we already have that, effectively, IMHO.
What I would like to see more of on this forum is stories about our Chastain ancestors. I have one or two which I could contribute. We all recognize that the most interesting part of genealogy is not knowing merely names and dates, but knowing as much as possible about the individuals and the times in which they lived.
Also, we all have many other family lines besides Chastain. I see no harm in "advertising" here what lines we're interested in. The discussion of such lines, however, should take place elsewhere.
Robert
Hello to all. I wish to pose a question to the list. Why do you need to
have a board / panel for a DISCUSSION list? I see that as another road
to further separation.
If you would like to see a list of rules that are sent out by other
listowners, I will be delighted to furnish examples as I have many
(rules may range from guidelines of discussion to the structure of
subject lines for enhanced archiving). Theses are usually sent out to
new subscribers and occasionally posted to the list as reminders by the
listowner.
The other lists I am on, and have been on, are each MODERATED by a
listowner, but the discussions are open to all. That way if the subjects
of discussion move too far afield or too prolonged and pointless, or,
perish the thought, a flaming war erupts, the listowner steps in with
appropriate action. That would be very difficult to do on the Internet
if you have to wait for a panel to assemble. The Internet presents
unique situations. There is a greater immmediacy to all matters online.
It seems to me boards and panels are best left to the institutions and
the administration of discussion lists left to the listowner.
.I really believe, Carlos, you were just trying to jump start us. And it
would appear that you have accomplished your mission. Now may we move on
to the work that needs to be done and that is to learn our family
histories and culture?
Respectfully,
Carol Middleton
I forgive you, but I haven't showed it to Robert yet. He's easy and
probably forgives you to.
I'll help discuss matters to the best of my abilities, whatever you want to
call the group. And, if Robert has a differing opinion, I'll indicate it as
such. :-) I live in Kansas, I've been to Arkansas a lot, but, I've not seen
or been around much of the history of the Chastains.
Wish I could help you get rid of the Juno tag. But, I'm semi-literate
when it comes to computer stuff. I can just sorta function. I may be
yelling HELP sometime to figure out how to do something. Gedcom and DOS and
other things leave me speechless.
