Hi Carlos ,
Regarding your Message #2 We have no further info on sisters of your
grandmother, Rhoda & Nancy. You seem to be concerned about the spelling of
the Chastain name in the various census records. More than likely this was
the Census Taker's spelling of the name rather than the family itself. Many
people back in the 1800's did not know how to read & write and the census
takers were not much better off. They spelled phonetically. The French
pronunciation of the name Chastain was "Shasteen." So you can see why the
name is spelled so many different ways.
A reserch tip - always check out the variant spellings of any name on which
you are doing research. I suppose, Smith, Jones & Brown might be the
exceptions. Ha! Gerre
My grandmother was a daughter of William Henry Harrison Chastain, the
first child of William C. Chastain (and it is spelled that way in the
1850 census) and his wife Nancy Mayfield (page 213 in the book). She
had two sisters Roda and Nancy and I have searched for years, for
information about them. The 1870 census of Cherokee County AL. dated
August 16th, 1870 lists W H Chasteen, 29, a farm hand, and his wife Mary
Jane Darnell, 26 with three children Frances Palestine, 8,
Roda M. 4 and Nancy E 3. My grandmother always spelled her name
CHASTAIN. Her father spelled it Chasteen and his father spelled it
Casteen according to the census taker in 1860. Any help? CARLOS

I just received an E Mail message from Denny Chasteen. His E Mail is the same

I got this off the Wooten list. Can anyone help? Please respond off the

Hi Elaine, Lucky you with such a Book! About 20 years ago, my father and
I went to the Oolenoy Baptist Church and I remember seeing the headstone
for Elizabeth Jane Allen. I wonder if the Mormons have mapped this
cemetary? Apparently they've been all over the world mapping cemetaries.
It would be interesting to find out. Unfortunately, the nearest LDS
library is about an hour from here and I don't have time to go look. I
didn't know about the two other Chastain cemetaries in the area. Where
are there? There is one in North Georgia that I know of. Can't remember
exactly where even though I've been there and would have to go check my
notes. If anyone is interested, I'll look. Elizabeth Allen
Kathryn, Thank you so much for your response. The James Allen you
referred to (the one who married Martha Chastain daugh. of "Blind John")
is the son of Ruben's brother, William Allen (b. 1753 - d.1845 or 1834).
William Allen was married to Mary Barnes. This James had a sister,
Tempie (Temperance) who married Abner Chastain. I have a copy of some
papers with Abner Chastain's signature. Will have to get a scanner in
order to share some of these things. The original is in the Archives in
Atlanta, GA. I seem to be able to find primary sources for everyone
except poor Ruben Allen (born c. 1750)! It's interesting that he only
had one son (James 1776-1805), the one who married Elizabeth Chastain in
1805. Thanks again. Elizabeth Allen
Hi Elizabeth,
I have a book called A History of Oolenoy Baptist Church and the lives of the
people who have worked for it's growth 1795-1995. My ancestor Rev. Tyre Lewis
Roper pastored there for 35 years. The first pastor was Rev. John Chastain,
in 1795 he established Oolenoy Baptist Church with the help of another of my
ancestors Rev. Elnathan Davis. In the back of the book is a list of graves in
the cemetery. I have visited this graveyard myself. It is very old and a
lot of the stones are soft soapstone and have faded through the years. It is
very well kept. On row 5, there is a fieldstone (unreadable) and Mrs.
Elizabeth Jane Allen b. Feb. 12, 1831, died Sept. 13, 1853 reads: Stranger,
here lies a Christian. On Row 10, there is 2 Keith markers, 1 fieldstone
(unreadable) and then Mary Chastain b. 1-3-1825, d. 2-17-1905, then another
unreadable fieldstone. These are the only Chastain and Allen markers that I
can find. Of course there were 2 Chastain cemeterys in the area according to
the book.
Hope this helps some.
Elaine
Rev. John Chastain, Jr.(1766-1845) had a friend and neighbor, Ruben (or
Reuben) Allen (1755- ?) who also married a Denton. They lived near the
Pendleton District, SC. The son of Ruben Allen (James) married the
daughter of John Chastain, Jr. (Elizabeth). I have had no success in
locating Ruben Allen (my 4th GGfather) other than finding his signature,
along with those of some Chastains, on a paper in the Atlanta Archives.
This paper had to do with the boundery dispute going on at that time.
(The GA, SC, and NC borders came together in one corner and no one could
agree on exactly where that corner was.) If anyone has come across Ruben
Allen m. to _______ Denton, I'd appreciate any information. Many years
ago, the records of the church to which this family were attached
(Oolenoy Baptist Church), were burned in a fire. Primary sources of
information having to do with Allens and Chastains were lost. Thank you.
Elizabeth Allen
I seem to be out of the loop again. Nothing unusual. <g> When and where
are we planning the next reunion? I've been trying for over 10 years to
attend one but always get the information too late to make plans.
Elizabeth
Gwen,
Greatly appreciate the posting with the information on the Hiawassee area,
we need to get you in contact with Ed Eller and Del Chastain who are
coordinating the reunion, they would like to hear from anyone who could
help. At this time I don't know just what the plans are or how they are
progressing on finding a location, other than it was hoped it would be near
to or in Hiawassee. Has anyone heard from Del or Ed? I don't have an email
for either. I'll post their address and phone numbers below.
I'm expecting quite a large gathering at this reunion, have not held in
Georgia in quite some time and we have a lot of members there. Loyce will
send notices to all the local papers and I believe that she will notify the
major papers in the surrounding states as well. Maybe there are other
suggestions for reaching more of the family also, I don't know if direct
mailouts have worked or not.
PCFA member David Chastain of Acworth, GA is Historian for the Jason Coward
Chastain Historical Society, he has a web site with info on this group,
http://home.sprynet.com/interserv/soxquest/homepage.htm , hopefully he
will help spread the word as well.
Here are the guys to contact with Reunion 98 suggestions, etc..

of lodging, etc..

Thanks to all who responded about the gibberish and screen font. Have
double checked my settings once again, found one other and I think that I
now have changed everything to plain text format for sending messages. As
you will note, I've resent the forward from Mrs. Register once more just as
a test. Let me know how this comes through. It appears that it is
something that is initiated from the rootsweb server due to my send
settings, as I sent the same items to my aol address, that is not routed
through rootsweb first, and did not get the gibberish there. Again, if
all else fails can subscribe with my aol account.
Jimmy
Does this look any better?

Please suggest to Mr. Ed Eller that he investigate the possibility of
using facilities at Young Harris College available for those who might not
be able to stay in a more expensive place. This could only be used
during summer months when school not in session. I look forward to the
meeting being held in this area. Thank you.

Hi Kathryn, Elaine and the rest. I too have a Chastain-West connection.
I know very little of the West family and have hopes someone can help me
make a breakthrough. The below is what I am "presuming" (undocumented)
at this time.

Thomas Jefferson Chastain it appears was much younger than his wife
Hannah West. He died serving for the Confederacy in Richmond VA. I only
know of the one child, Mary Melinda, who is my gggrandmother. Any help
at all would be appreciated. By the way would it be possible that Hannah
could have filed for Pension? If so does anyone know where to write for
the records? Thanks, Steve Pearson
