Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Subject: Please help Odom Library!
Forgive me if you get duplicates of this message-I'm trying to publish
it as widely as I can by sending it to all the lists I'm subscribed to.
Here's an opportunity for us to show just what genealogists can do by
working together. Please forward this to as many individuals and mailing
lists as you can.
The Family Tree Magazine, published by Odom Library in Moultrie, GA, is a
**major** resource for genealogists in the US and other locations. While
it has a predominantly Scottish orientation, the bi-monthly magazine is
something that many of us read from cover to cover for all sorts of
tidbits. The paper is self-supporting through ads and postage donations-
there is no subscription charge to the more than 65,000 people who receive
a copy.
According to an article in the December/January issue, the US Postal
Service (which I'm sure has made a flipping fortune off genealogists, and
which announced a rate increase as of 10 January, and which wouldn't be
facing financial woes if it ran more efficiently- end of soapbox) has
assessed a HUGE fine on Odom Library and the Family Tree Magazine-nearly
$80,000 -- because the magazine contains travel information. Apparently,
the postal inspector said it's okay to have articles about travel, since
travel is a part of genealogy, but "someone might have fun on one of the
trips." That is too ludicrous to warrant a response!
All the appeals so far, including Congressional inquiries from Georgia
legislators, have been denied or ignored.
On top of that, the USPS <insert your favorite derogatory epithet here>
inspectors decided that, while the Moultrie Public Library was a non-profit
organization and entitled to use its mailing permit, the Odom Library
(which has always been a part of the Moultrie Library) is not.
What can we do about this? Write letters. Send e-mails. Inundate the
USPS site (www.usps.gov) with complaints. Write, call, and e-mail your
Congress critters.
We have to save Family Tree Magazine-not just for its own sake, but to
prevent the USPS from investigating and placing similar sanctions against
all the other genealogical publications out there.
Now-go have fun on a genealogy trip and send a postcard to the
Postmaster General to let him know you did it! <vbg>
And get that stack of snailmail genealogy correspondence caught up before
10 January, or it will cost you more to send it!
There is s story (not officially confirmed so far as I know) the when
the Bill of Rights was being written, a delegation of Baptist ministers
called on Thomas Jefferson to suggest the passage prohibiting
establishment of any particular denomination. Consequently, if this
story is true, these men had an important part in establishing one of
the important principals embodied in the US Constitution. Rene (II)
Chastain was a very prominent Baptist minister in Buckingham County (not
far from Jefferson's home) Moreover, Rene had done battle with the
British govermental functionaries over that issue. Before the revolution
all of the baptist ministers in Chesterfield County had been imprisoned
for daring to preach the baptist theology without a license from the
British authorities. Rene responded to a request to come down and
baptise believers in Chesterfield County. He was threatened with jail
and horsewhipping if he didnet leave immediately. He defied authorities,
preached and baptised and soon after, the local ministers were released.
This much information I have from a baptist publication of the time.
What I don't know is the identities of the ministers who visited
Jerrerson. Does anybody have any documentation or know where such might
be found?
Marv Chastain
Hi Marv:
I have the little booklet "The Virginia Baptist Register, Number
Thirty-Three, 1994". Is this the publication you have? If not, I could
tell you what it says. Rene, Sr. and Rene, Jr. are my Great Grandfathers so
I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with regarding the visit to
Thomas Jefferson. This is very interesting! Thanks, Janice Chastain Lund

Hi - I read with interest your recent post on the visit to Jefferson. I
am descended from Rev. John Chastain,(1743-1805)and would like to know
about this. I know that Rene (Rane, Rainey) Chastain was a minister in
VA as he performed a marriage for another of my ancestors and thought
that perhaps Cousin John was involved, too.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

THIS IS A FINANCIAL REQUEST FOR "ROOTSWEB"
CONSIDER IT IF YOU WILL=DELETE IF YOU WANT
WHATEVER YOU DO.....IT'S YOUR OWN DECISION
==========================================
Everyone on a very limited income, those new and young genealogy
researchers with young families or people who already give to
RootsWeb may delete this message.
For everyone else, I am asking you to give me a moment.
RootsWeb is run by a Mom and Pop operation called Brian Leverich
and Karen Isaacson, husband and wife. They started RootsWeb out of
the money in their pockets with the server in their home. Karen
works for Rand Corp fulltime and Brian, a Phd in computers, does
speaking engagements and keeps RootsWeb servers, equipment "pieced"
together with whatever donations comes their way.
Brian is determined to keep genealogy free on the internet. Our
donations haven't been enough (about 2.5% of the users of RootsWeb
sites donate) so he went out after a sponsor who wouldn't have
strings attached. Palladium came across but was recently bought by
the biggies, I think it was the Broderbund conglommerate - forget)
and the money and equipment expected from Palladium didn't make the
last payment. Soooo, Brian and Karen took out a $25,000 loan
recently to keep our genealogy free out here.
A thought has crossed some minds that the "biggies" are trying to
break Brian and Karen down in order to get B and K to sell out to
them.
Brian and Karen are working to go non profit so down the road maybe
some major contributions and foundation money will go their way.
Brian says all involved in going non profit with an atty, etc, is
mind boggling.
In the meantime, RootsWeb is really hurting in the financial support
department.
Anytime you are subscribed to a list or browse/search sites for
genealogy information, note the domain in the url. Does it have
rootsweb in the address?
I am begging you, if you can afford it, to support the RootsWeb
Genealogical Cooperative.
If you've been helped you in anyway with your research, would you
consider a donation of $5 - $20 to RootsWeb so we can keep all this
genealogy data on the internet free and even increase the data for
users?
I am doing my part by being a donor.
Here is the site to learn about RootsWeb and the address to donate.
http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
I know with Christmas we are all pretty well tapped out, but could
you find $5 to $20 or even more by Jan?
Think of those little pieces of paper with ancestors names on them
that Grandpa, Grandma, Dad or Mom saved for you, how they would be
flabbergasted at the time it is taking you to find a ggggrandparent
by way of the internet and RootsWeb.
By January, we will probably find the RootsWeb servers overloaded
with all the new computers received as Christmas presents. It
happens every year.
A side note here - this is the best time to browse while everyone
is in Wally World going crazy with shopping. Better get the
browsing done now because January and the increase in people going
online, it inevitably slows down.
Thanks for listening and thank you to anyone who will contribute to
RootsWeb. [Written by Gloria Frazier and Adapted by Glenn Belcher]
Happy Holidays,
Sorry, didn't see your second post!!! I checked "Chastain Kith & Kin" and
see nothing in the index for Adelia Wisdom CHASTAIN. Perhaps the Volume 1
of the newer family history has something on her. Sorry...Jan

This letter came to me personally but it is so full I am letting everyone
share it. CARLOS
<Hi, I'm Phyllis Brown and I am new to the family tree search. My maiden name
was Chastain. I am looking for the Chastain's located in Western North
Carolina-specifically Highlands, Macon County, North Carolina.
My father is EJ Chastain (only initials no given name) married to Naomi Talley
Grandfather was Zeke (Ezekiel) Chastain who died in 1938 married to Martha
Picklesimer
G Grandfather was Andy Chastain married to Martha Jane Rogers
I have not had much luck finding information further back then what I have.
This information I got from my father's older siblings. The family bible has
been lost with any other information that I might have gleaned from there.
I would really appreciate any information regarding my family, and would like
to meet some of my lost cousins.
Thank You,
Phyllis Brown

Hi Cousins: I do not want to discourage anyone from posting letters, and I
know that the oldsters on the list know this, but I just want to say that HTML
mail, attachments, `enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to
Rootsweb mailing lists. Those letters will not be processed to the
subscribers of the list. Rootsweb has a web page explaining the problem. We
love plain text, and could use a lot more.
