I found this old letter among my Grandfather's stuff that my Father gave me
and would like to share with ya'll so you can be as amused as I am. :-)
The letter is from Abraham M. Chastain b. 1 April 1853 GA d. 14 Jan. 1927
Dalton, Whitfield Co, GA. The letter is to his son Benjamin Franklin
Chastain b. 26 Jun. 1878 Nashville, TN d. 1 Jun. 1954 Pelly, Harris Co, TX.
The letter mentions Ben's wife Betty who is Elizabeth Armanda Flowers b.
14 Feb. 1886 Pollok, Angelina Co, TX d. 12 Feb. 1968 Baytown, Harris Co, TX
( I remember her well. She used to chew tobacco and spit into a Folger's
coffee can, and we would empty it for her. Ha ha). He also mentions
Jessey, which is another of his sons and Ben's half-brother. He mentions
looking for a wife but I believe his wife Ebbie (Reece?) was still living
at the time ( and he is at the age of 70 years when he writes this letter).
This is not Ben's mother, his mother was Susan Mealer. Now that you know
who the character's are here is this short letter written exactly as he
wrote it with mispelled words and lack of puntuation and capital letters.

very kind and helpful to me and I thank you so much. I have not gotten

because of the new connections I have form. Here is my line:

Marshalls for the territory of OK.
Not much but someday I hope to connect to Pierre Chastain.
Dear Chastain Cousins:
I must tell you about a crisis that confronts the descendants of Pierre
Chastain's daughter Elizabeth and her husband David LeSueur. This is a
very long message, but please read every word! Following is a message I
sent to my LeSueur cousins. We call on each and every one of our
Chastain cousins to join us in this battle against desecration of the
cemetery on David and Elizabeth (Chastain) LeSueur's home place, "Terre
Haute," near the Old Manakin Church and the home of Pierre Chastain,
Midlothian, Virginia.
I AND MY LeSUEUR COUSINS ARE PUTTING TOGETHER A LIST OF E-MAIL ADDRESSES
AND SNAIL MAIL ADDRESSES TO WHICH WE CAN WRITE. IF YOU WILL E-MAIL ME
AT
pollyd(a)ix.netcom.com
I'LL SEND YOU THE LIST. WE WILL BE CONTACTING THE GOVERNOR AND LIEUT.
GOVERNOR OF VIRGINIA, THE VIRGINIA DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY,
LOCAL NEWSPAPERS AND TELEVISION STATIONS. WE HAVE ALSO ENLISTED THE
HELP OF THE HUGUENOT SOCIETY OF THE FOUNDERS OF MANAKIN IN THE COLONY OF
VIRGINIA, THE VIRGINIA STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY, AND THE VIRGINIA STATE
ARCHEOLOGIST'S DIRECTOR OF CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL RESOURCES.
IF ANY OF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS, PLEASE PLEASE SHARE THEM WITH US.
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!
IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE THAT WE MANAKIN HUGUENOT DESCENDANTS BRING
AS MUCH PRESSURE TO BEAR AS POSSIBLE ON THE BUREAUCRATS, ETC. WHO ARE
ABOUT TO COMMIT WHAT AMOUNTS TO OFFICIALLY-SANCTIONED DESECRATION OF THE
CEMETERY AND THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF THE DESCENDANTS OF DAVID AND
ELIZABETH (CHASTAIN) LeSUEUR .
Dear Cousins:
> I was absolutely shocked when I learned THAT A NEW HIGHWAY IS TO BE
> BUILT ACROSS THE PROPERTY ONCE OWNED BY DAVID AND ELIZABETH (CHASTAIN)
> LeSUEUR. THIS IS "TERRE HAUTE" (The High Ground), ANCESTRAL HOME OF ALL
> DESCENDANTS OF DAVID AND ELIZABETH (CHASTAIN) LeSUEUR, DAUGHTER OF DR. PIERRE CHASTAIN AND ANNE SOBLET.
>
> PRELIMINARY ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEYS HAVE DISCOVERED AN ANCIENT CEMETERY
> DIRECTLY IN THE PATH OF THE PROPOSED HIGHWAY.
>
> Mrs. Jean Hudson, present owner of the property, spoke with me on Oct.
> 1st, so that I could let all of you know what's happening, and to ask
> everyone to join her in her fight to get the route of the proposed highway
> moved away from the cemetery.
>
> Mrs. Hudson's ancestor, Thomas Harris, bought the property from Martel
> LeSueur and his mother, Elizabeth (Chastain) LeSueur, after the death of
> David LeSueur.
>
> In 1740 David LeSueur purchased the first of two tracts: 137 acres,
> which he purchased from the original owner, William Battersby. The
> second tract of 160 acres was purchased from William Salle.
>
> David LeSueur made his will in Cumberland Co., Virginia on 10 Dec 1771
> (will was proved on 24 Feb 1772) and bequeathed to his son Martell "all
> of the land whereon I now live, after his mother Elizabeth's death,
> provided he pays his brother Fell 40 pounds."
>
> Martell LeSueur, his wife Elizabeth, and his mother Elizabeth (Chastain)
> LeSueur sold a 44-ac section to Thomas Harris in 1787. In 1788, they
> sold the remainder (246 ac) to Thomas Harris. Thomas Harris immediately
> transferred ownership to Robert Harris.
>
> The property has been in the Harris family continuously since 1787 and
> 1788.
>
> In October 1995, Mrs. Hudson graciously invited Carol Garrett, my Aunt
> Louise, and I to tour the home. She has lovingly restored the house and
> has been a good steward of the property. We all owe her a debt of
> gratitude for preserving this beautiful piece of our LeSueur
> heritage.
> Mrs. Hudson has been battling the Virginia Department of Transportation
> for more than a year. After changes in the original plans, the highway
> was to go right through the original barn. Mrs. Hudson appeared on
> television and was interviewed by several newspapers, and was successful
> in getting the highway moved 75 feet to miss the barn. It is believed
> that the LeSueur family lived in the barn while the house was being
> built. Bricks for the house were made right at the site.
NOW, THE PRELIMINARY ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEY HAS SHOWN THE ANCIENT
CEMETERY'S LOCATION.
>
> The highway, as ORIGINALLY planned, was not to have been anywhere near
> the barn OR the cemetery. Now a golf course is in the works, and this
> may have some bearing on the location of the highway -- the developers
> may be pressuring DOT!
>
> During the preliminary archeological survey, the ancient cemetery was
> located. The archeologists discovered marble shards, which leads Mrs.
> Hudson to believe that this may be the actual site of David LeSueur's
> grave, since he died in 1772, before the property was sold by David's
> son and widow to Thomas Harris. Some of their children may also be buried here.
>
> Mrs. Hudson said that "an old, old LeSueur cousin, many years deceased,
> knew where the cemetery was located and always said that was where David
> LeSueur was buried."
>
> The Secretary of the Department of Transportation has told Mrs. Hudson
> that the cemetery can be moved. She doesn't know where they plan to
> move it to. HOWEVER, MRS. HUDSON DOESN'T WANT THE CEMETERY MOVED!!!!!
> SHE WANTS THE PROPOSED HIGHWAY TO BE MOVED ABOUT 300 FEET, SO THAT IT
> DOESN'T GO THROUGH THE BARN OR THE CEMETERY. There is plenty of land
> (HER land!!) in that location, which she will be happy for them to use.
> She and her husband planted hundreds of pine trees in that area, and if
> they put the highway there, it will cut down on pollution, etc.
>
> IN FACT, MRS. HUDSON SAID THAT, AS ORIGINALLY ENVISIONED, THE HIGHWAY
> WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR THE CEMETERY.
>
> I'm just touching the tip of the iceberg in this message -- Mrs. Hudson
> is photocopying all the correspondence she has on this matter (she said
> her dining room is full of it), and I have requested a copy of the
> archeological report from the Virginia DOT. This is to be mailed to me on Monday.
>
> It is known that slaves were buried in this cemetery, and the cemetery
> was used as late as 1941. Reportedly there is a veteran of WW I buried
> there, but no information has been found on his record. Four graves
> have been identified. Mims Funeral Directors, a Black-owned funeral
> home, has helped identify these graves of deceased Black people.
>
> I have spoken with the State Archeologist, and have left messages for
> the president and other officers of the Huguenot Society of the Founders
> of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, whom I know. I will request that
> the Society help in this. I'll let you all know what I learn from them.
>
> WE LeSUEUR DESCENDANTS NEED TO RALLY AROUND MRS. HUDSON IN HER FIGHT TO
> PREVENT DESECRATION OF THIS BURIAL GROUND!!!!
>
> Now where do we go?????
>
> For my part, I've been on the telephone talking to the Manakin
> Society folks and the cultural resources group who did the archeological survey.
>
> As soon as I receive the correspondence from Mrs. Hudson, I'll copy it
> and send copies to all of you.
>
> Assuming I can get a copy of the archeological report, I'll probably
> have to abstract it -- it's more than 60 pages long -- and send it to
> you all.
>
> Mrs. Hudson is going to attend a Planning and Re-zoning meeting next
> Wednesday evening. I told her to HOLD FIRM! DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY
> WITH THIS! She said this is not how she wants to spend her time, but
> there's nothing else to do but FIGHT.
>
> She asked me to tell all of us how very much she appreciates whatever

> ALL OF US, PLUS ALL OUR RELATIVES. I HAVE AT LEAST 100 LeSUEUR
> RELATIVES AND I INTEND TO CONTACT EVERY ONE OF THEM!!! (PLUS ALL MY CHASTAIN COUSINS IN THE PCFA!)
>
> If those of you who live in Virginia

>
> I'm so sorry I didn't know about this earlier. Mrs. Hudson apologized
> for not telling us, and said she didn't know it would be so difficult.
> That's why she has now turned to the David and Elizabeth (Chastain) LeSueur descendants to join
> the fight. And we LeSueur descendants are asking the Chastains to join us.
>
> WE MAY NOT WIN AGAINST THE FOLKS TRYING TO BUILD THE GOLF COURSE, OR

>
> PLEASE, LET ME HEAR FROM YOU.
