Hello,
It is nice to see this group active again! How many hours did we all spend together? How many of us went to Salt Lake City for the Reunion that the late Will Chase sponsored maybe 18 years ago? A bit has changed in my life since then!
My several Chase lines descended from William of Yarmouth and his son William. Joseph Chase and his wife Bethany Chase Chase left Cape Cod for Pawtucket in 1822. Their son James m. Lucy Ann Arnold. Their son George Albert (Chase/Chace) m. Lucinda Wheaton Slade.
Their daughter was my grandmother Winnifred Bertha Chace
About three years ago when I was in the middle of my three year term as Governor of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, having 7 proven Mayflower ancestors, 5 of which were from my grandmother Winnifred Bertha Chace’s line, I discovered thanks to DNA testing that Grandmother Chace was not biologically a Chase/Chace. Because her line was so well documented, I simply had not looked for DNA matches for her. I was too busy researching her husband’s line which traced back to Colonial Virginia, Tennessee and Southern Illinois. It wasn’t until a young man walked into the Genealogy Room of the public library where I volunteer weekly asking a question about grandmother’s great- grandmother, who happened to be his ancestor too, that I began to look for matches. With 5 Mayflower ancestors, they should have been plentiful. They weren’t!
I had questioned myself about her birth certificate, issued by MA, stating she was born in Boston (although she always claimed Fall River, MA as her birthplace and her family had lived in Pawtucket, RI, for more than 50 years) and that it was a delayed registration, filed in February of 1888, she being born in January of 1887. But Great-grandpa Chase/Chace was a carpenter, so perhaps he was traveling with his family to other jobs, I mused. I had also discovered while looking for a male Chace/Chase relative to Y DNA test, that her parents had been married 10 years before she was born and she was their only child, living or dead. (U.S. Federal Census) Another red flag...
So, now I am trying to find out who I really am. I am pretty sure Winnifred was the daughter of her “mother’s” stepsister and someone she met in Boston. You see, Harriet, the now supposed bio-mother, became pregnant at age 15, married and had a son when she was 16. She was probably too young to handle that and left the baby with her husband in Pawtucket and went to visit her brother, a seaman stationed in Boston. She found herself pregnant again with another man’s child when her son was about 11 months old. Winifred was born in Boston. Harriet then went home with the new baby to Pawtucket. There was a divorce in August of 1887. She left the son with his father. She took baby Winnifred to Fall River where her, Harriet’s, father was living and cared for her until she no longer could when she gave Winnifred to George and Lucinda Chace who formally registered her birth as theirs. Harriet then went on to marry again 3 more times and lived until 1961, in her nineties, never having more children. (My grandmother Winifred died in 1938 when my dad was young.)
I know who Harriet’s mother is, also named Harriet, an Eldridge with Cape Cod roots, but Harriet’s father of record is probably not her bio- father as they were divorced before she was born - or at least Mother Harriet was living with another man and her son and calling herself by his surname. (RI Census) That man passed away probably just before young Harriet was conceived, so her true father is unknown. Mother Harriet was also married 4 times.
Thank you for reading this far. So, the interesting thing is that now I am getting lots of Chase matches for DNA, but they come from the Newburyport area - home of Aquila and Thomas. (That is based on Ancestry testing. I have also tested at Family Tree, 23&Me and Living DNA.) Perhaps Winnifred’s bio-father was a descendant of that Chase line. Maybe someday, I will find the answers...
So, I may still be a Chase, but not a Chace!

Barry, doing a search on the internet "Reuben Chase 1761" came up with a
match from Ancestry.com, but don't know how accurate it is. You would have
to explore it further.

Hi Barry
No, I don't have the source. Just some charts I put on my computer some
fifteen or twenty years ago. I haven't done anything with them, don't have
a tree up as I have not authenticated all of it though I think it is mostly
accurate.
About Mary Townley... just read through the "Chase Families" by Ginger
Reeder Christensen on Jeff Chace's website and she had the possibility of
Townley being the name, then later (I think after more research) discounts
it, so it may be wrong. I would accept the research she did over mine!
I have found a couple of places where the Holder name is used, and feel it
is possibly correct. But, it was so long ago that I gathered all of this
that I just don't recall where it came from.
I should put a tree up on Ancestry, but haven't because there is so much
incorrect information out there I didn't want to be guilty of contributing
to it. I need to do that while I still can (I'm 81) but will leave the
wives' surnames blank.
We had a relative, Ruby Newman Ludwig, who died in 1922 and had put together
a lot of Chace information, as her mother was a Chace. I think we are
fortunate that there has been an interest in the family over the years and
much has been gathered and now, posted online, and with the addition of the
DNA, it should be exciting for future researchers!

My grandmother was Daisy Aileen Chase b 6/11/1926 and her line was as follows:
Leslie Jay Chase b 3/23/1882 m Mary A Corlew
Francis Adelbert Chase b 7/5/1853 m Mary E McMannus
Ebenezer Chase b 10/29/1821 m Jerusha Ruth Fairchild
That is as far as I have confirmed, but I have further lines of:
Isaac Chase b 6/11/1798 m Elizabeth Owens
Ebenezer Chase b 9/18/1759 m Sarah Snow
Walter Chase Jr b 10/4/1717 m Anna simmons
Walter Chase b 10/23/1684 m Deliverance Simmons
Benjamin Chase b 4/28/1639 m Philippa sherman
William Chase Sr b abt 1590 m Mary
So, that’s line number one. My grandmother (Daisy Chase) was married to Robert Blackford. The blackford line crosses with another chase line further back it goes as follows:
In 1871, Elnora Estella Chase married Gilbert Montier Blackford, and Elnora’s ancestry is:
Rev Ira Chase b 4/12/1809 m Jane Wilcox
Eliphalet Chase b 3/21/1775 m Sukey Mudgett
Edmund Chase b 5/23/1743 m Betsy Gilman
Aquila Chase b 5/10/1715 m Mary Bowley
James Chase b 9/15/1685 m Martha Rolfe
Thomas Chase b 7/25/1654 m Rebecca Follansbee
Aquila Chase II b 4/9/1626 m Anne Wheeler
It continues back, but I have no idea if it is accurate with:
Aquila Benjamin Chase b 8/14/1580 m Martha Sarah Jelliman
Richard Chase b 8/3/1542 m Joane Bishop
Thomas Chase b 4/22/1520 m Elizabeth Bouchier
Matthew Chase b 1/6/1486 m Elizabeth Bold
John Chase b 1/6/1453 m Alice Elizabeth Harding
Thomas Chase III b 4/22/1422 m Elizabeth Sinclair
Thomas Chase Jr b 1391 m Elizabeth Turner (Pirates of the Caribbean???? lol)
Thomas Chase Baron of Hundridge b 1371 m Lady Elizabeth Bishop
Thomas Chase Lord of Basing b 1330 m Elizabeth Bould
Phillip Chase b 1305 m Audrey
So, it appears from this that I have 2 separate Chase lines on the same side of my family.
Roxanne Blackford
Barry, correction to my last email: Ruby Newman Ludwig died in 1975, her
mother, Emma Chace Newman, died in 1922.

Hi all,
My direct Chase Line as far back as I've gone is:
Jonathan Chase (1791 -1873) & Sally Mattison (1798 - 1855)
James Chase (1818-1883) & Hannah Gay (1827 - 1899)
Charles Madison Chase (1856-1927) & Ida May Haskins (1867 - 1959)
Arthur Bertrum Chase (1889-1985) & Alice Arizona Graves (1893 - 1990)
Raymond Arthur Chase (1920-1995) & Marie Josephine Sefcik (1922 - 1998)
Rayma Lou Chase (living) & Fred Clifford Hyatt (1932-1992)
Susan Heider (me)
I've found there is a lot of bogus info out there much of which claims that James father was Heman Chase (Jonathan's brother) and I don't where that first bad info came from but it spread like the Spanish flu. For those that may be researching this same family, Heman was not the father of (my) James. Heman stayed in Ohio after they migrated from New York and Jonathan went on to Wisconsin with his family.
Happy Researching. 😊

Dear Chase members Rootsweb has, at long last, restored functionality to our mailing list. Actually they have been up and running for a few months. It just came to the attention of Admin's at Rootsweb that the Chase group didn't have an administrator so I volunteered to take the group back over.
Post your Chase line so we can refresh our memories and to let your list administrator (myself) know that you're still out there. Hoping this finds you all well.
Thanks,
Lisa Martin

This is Jeffrey Chace.
I am still out here. Primarily spend all of my research time on Harry Chase, a rather obscure 19th Century American artist. His full name was Henry Seymour Chase Jr. He was born in 1853 in Woodstock, Vermont.
The New York Times featured an article on my research of Harry Chase in 2014. http://nyti.ms/1oZePO4
Also, there will be an article published in Maine Antique Digest in the next month or two that I wrote about one of Harry's paintings.
Harry is descended from William Chase as follows:
William Sr., William Jr., John Sr., John Jr, Elisha, Paul, Jarvis, Dr.
Henry Seymour Chase Sr., Harry Chase.
If you are interested in Harry, check out my website at https://sites.google.com/site/harrychaseartist/ He was a pretty fascinating guy.
I am also working on getting a biography of the man published that I have written over the last 10 years.
If anyone has anything to share about Harry Chase, I would be glad to hear of it.
Cheers,
Jeffrey Chace

Linda, there are some mistakes in your lineage. I believe what I have
posted is the correct order and names. Luckily, our Chace line was
researched for many years. We share my great grandfather, William Henry.

Do any of you have any hints on contacting people on my new Ancestry DNA list. Most do not respond even though they have a family tree.
Thanks Barry

My documented ancestry:
Aquila Chase ca 1818-1870
Moses 1663-1743
Moses 1688-1760
Seth 1715-1791
Josiah 1748-1813
Josiah 1777-1859
George Barlow Chase 1816-1895
Herbert Britton Chase 1863-1936
Edward Hutchinson Chase 1897-1984
Richard A (me) 1931-
In researching the ancestry of my wife, Kela Hinds, I discovered that we are cousins, as she descends through as maternal CHASE-HINDS link from Aquila’s brother, Thomas.
Having researched my CHASE & associated maternal lines to the point of identifying some 1400+ relatives, my current genealogical efforts are limited to housekeeping (as Administrator) the CHASE Project records at FamilyTreedna.com, and, as I encounter incorrect genealogies, attempting to stamp out posted misinformation claiming any alleged linkage of the brothers Thomas and Aquila Chase to claimed specific ancestors in England or elsewhere.
The FACT is, despite many CHASE ancestries’ (unsupported) claims to the contrary, there has never been any valid. verifiable documentation found here or in England that ties the brothers to any individuals or family line, or locality from which they emigrated to America. We assume they were from England, Hampton MBC (where they first show up) having been an English colony, and the “Aquila” name strongly suggests an English family link.

Thanks,
Lisa Martin
