Hi Keith,
We’ve never made acquaintances, but I’ve been watching the Chase conversations for several years now. You made an interesting comment – “He describes and refers to a Diary in which a first hand account was made by a passenger on the Ship which took my Chase ancestors to Nova Scotia after the end of the Rev War.” My mother is a Chase, descended from Leonard George Chase, born 1827 in Sackville, Westmoreland, New Brunswick, died 1910 in St. Andrews, Charlotte, New Brunswick. I have never been able to identify Leonard’s parents, and was wondering if your Chase research extended from Nova Scotia into New Brunswick.
Regards,
Tom

HI!JUDY,
Well we all seem to have worn well.
Regarding William Chase. You may remember "Ginger" Chrisensen. She lived in England and spent a LOT of time researching
William's birth.
As far as I am concerned I believe she got the answer when she discovered a William Chase born at Wivenhoe Essex.
I believe either his father or grandfather was called Benjamin , a very common Chase name. Winthrop's list referred to a William Chase "... of Essex"
Also he was born about 1597 I believe, The same year Shakespeare wrote "Romeo and Juliet"
I have a copy of the exact date from a copy of the Wivenhoe Parish register sent to me by Ginger.
I believe it may still be on the Chase.Chace website somewhere I would have to search for it otherwise.
Your tour sounds fascinating. In my own research I discovered a lot about the Winthrop Fleet which took place under license from James 1 of England. The patent was to form The Massachussettss bay company. I have a copy of the Patent which I got from Toronto Library when I was touring /tracing the places the early Chase family had lived. I also got a copy of an ORIGINAL act of the British Parliament showing how the people evacuated from new York to Nova Scotia were entitled to compensation and generous it was too.
I am not do any more research on the CHASE line but have concentrated on A Sarah Chase who married my GG Grandfather. I have traced her back to William so in my Family History I have got as far as my Dad's part in WW1 and it ia a bool in itself as I have the Battalion Diary and his health and paybook records so I know eher he was every day from when he landed in France from Australia. I also have a copy of the Diary written by a friend of Sarah's grandson who married into my HUME family. He describes and refers to a Diary in which a first hand account was made by a passenger on the Ship which took my Chase ancestors to Nova Scotia after the end of the Rev War. It includes the evacuation of new York by the British.
There is much more but as I live about 20 miles from Wivenhoe and about 200 miles from Manchester I am calling the book "Around the World in 307 Years"
Keep well,
Keith

Subject: [CHASE] Chace Research
Hello to Keith, Jeffrey, Lonnie and others still interested in
Chaces/Chases! I am still here, too, and living on the Bass River in
Yarmouth, Massachusetts, not far from where William Chase first settled.
I've been enjoying reading all the recent emails which prove that we are all
still here - just not as active as we once were (before so many, many
records were made available online).
.
I am still doing research, but wonder if we will ever find all the answers
to who William Chase really was. Sometime back, I wrote that I had been
researching Essex, England records online and had found the birth of a
William Chase born in 1585 in Harwich, Essex, England. I think that is too
early based on the age William would have been when he sailed with the
Winthrop Fleet to begin a new life in America.
I had been using Essex Records, "translating" the Latin and the old-style
writing of these records going back to the late 1500s. Looking into those
records again, I find they are no longer free.
I did take the opportunity to look back thru the Chase Rootsweb list and
found lots of interesting discussion in February 2011, between Jeffrey and
me about the Chaces of Wivenhoe and Elmstead, Essex. What is missing from
that discussion is a later posting wherein we were informed that the William
Chase son of Benjamin was still living in Wivenhoe when our William had made
his way to Yarmouth.
My exciting news however is that I will be traveling this August to Bury St.
Edmunds, Suffolk, England, with NEHGS. The tour, entitled "The Great
Migration Tour to England, The Winthrop Fleet", will be led by Robert
Charles Anderson, and other staff of NEHGS. We will be focusing on and will
visit places pertinent to many of those who made the trip with The Winthrop
Fleet, which of course, includes William Chase. So, perhaps I will learn
something new about the family even if we are not in Essex County.
Finally, having been involved with YDNA testing on my paternal side with 3
different families, that is: Slade, Chace and Norman, I have found that they
are all I1 - the Viking haplogroup - and the Essex siting fits perfectly
with that finding.
Cheers to you all!
Judy

That is the fellow that I am interested in. Who were Susannah Knapp's
parents? And are you sure that her surname was Knapp?
After Obadiah died, she married Joseph Chase. The DAR record said that
his second wife was Susan Berry who was the sister of his first wife.
That is the puzzle that I am trying to solve.
Thanks for all of your help.

There is an Obadiah Chase, a Revolutionary soldier, who married Susannah
Knapp. He died in 1799 in Carmel, Putnam, New York. There are many trees on

Keith,
You mean brought back from the dead, right? :) There wasn't a single
message from 17 July 2012 until 7 May 2013. Looks like there is still some
interest out there. By the way, I have found some really nice articles from
the 1800s about the Chase family from the St. Louis Globe Democrat and will
post images of them at my website sometime soon. One is about the "Chase
Fortune" and presents it as reality! The next is about the "Chase Fortune"
and that it is actually a scam. Another is about Dr. Oliver Wendell
Holmes's opinion of the physical condition of Mary Chase, wife of the
immigrant William. Holmes's opinion can be found elsewhere on the internet,
but it is neat to see it actually reported in a local newspaper.
Cheers,
Jeffrey

Thanks. Aquila Chase's brother Thomas is my ancestor. A considerable number of amateur and professional genealogists, over the past hundred or so years, have tried to trace the ancestry and origins of these two, using all variations of their names, to no avail. I'll take a look at that Family Search info, though, as the search must continue.
Cheers,

The following is a letter from the Chase National Bank to William Chase of Salt Lake City
when he inquired about the name of the bank. William was the originator of the Chase Reunion
in the year 2000 in Salt Lake. He is now deceased.
Lonnie Chase
Chase Bank letter to William Chase
Dear Mr. Chase:
Thank you for your invitation and your interest in the Chase Manhattan Bank.
The origin of the word Chase in our name dates back to the founding of the Chase National Bank in 1877 when John Thompson, founder of the Chase National Bank,
decided to name his bank after his respected colleague, Salmon P. Chase,
Secretary of the Treasury under Abraham Lincoln. John Thompson and Salmon P.
Chase worked together to bring into effect many of the banking laws that exist
today. For that, John Thompson named his bank after Salmon P. Chase several
years after Chase's death. There is no other connection to the name and/or
family other than that. Salmon P. Chase never worked at the bank, and nor did
any of his relatives.
If you have any other questions, please let us know. Good luck with your event.
Sincerely,
Jean Elliott
Archivist
Laurence --
I have just received a message dated 5/14 from you on the
<mailto:chase@rootsweb.com> chase(a)rootsweb.com list distribution, so
apparently it's working, albeit a trifle slowly.
I have not previously seen any references to the Woolverstone parish
registry entry that you cite. The baptism date of 1619 for an Aquila Chase
would fit very well with the date of 1618 that we assume for the American
Aquila's birth based the age of "about 48 years" that he gives in the 1666
Court deposition. Since Hampton NH was an English settlement, it has always
been assumed that Aquila and Thomas had their roots in England, but there
has never been anything uncovered that definitively proves that. The fact
that it is documented that Timothy Dalton emmigrated to Hampton from
Woolverstone would tend to lend credence to that Aquila possibly being the
American one. It definitely would be worthwhile exploring the Parish
Register further if there is some way to access it for that time period to
see if Aquila's alleged brother, Thomas, can be located, as well as parental
and other relevant information. I appreciate your bringing this to the
List's attention.
If I sounded down on Noble, it's basically because of his publishing as fact
the totally baseless (other than similar names) Aquila-Chesham link. Makes
everyyhhting else he claims too suspect to pay attention to. I have read
reviews of his stuff that indicate other genealogists share this opinion.
That said, I do no mean that everything that he has done is incorrect.

Some of my messages to the List have not got through I think (am I right in
thinking that I should receive a copy back after sending a message?) so I
will try the private route instead.
First, I do read the posts so know that there is no evidence to link your
Aquila Chase with the Chase family of Chesham. While Noble got this wrong,
much of his English Chase genealogy is broadly correct, and it is a good
source for those of us with English roots, always checking of course.
Second,I have looked at the parish register for Woolverstone (FHL Mf
0919639) for Aquila Chase. Woolverstone is a village on the River Orwell
near Ipswich in Suffolk, and is the parish where Timothy Dalton was Rector
before he emigrated to Hampton NH around 1636 - see
http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us/hampton/biog/dalton/01.htm
The entry for Aquila reads: Aquila ye sonne of Thos Chaffe was bap ye 7 of
January 1619 (ie 1619/20).
The double ff usually stands for a single f, and while Chafe is a family
name (originating I understand in the West Country), Chase was sometimes
written as Chafe.
I could not find a burial for this Aquila up to 1640 in the Register, nor
could I find a marriage for his father Thomas, nor a baptism for a brother
Thomas.
Perhaps others have already followed this line of enquiry? If so, what was
their conclusion?

I do not have a copy of the Letter of Marque, but I see that Arthur H Noble
in his book "The Chase Family" (London: Heraldry Today 1967 p15) states that
Thomas Chase, merchant of London and eldest son of Jeremy Chase of
Cambridge, was with others granted Letters of Marque in 1626 for the ship
"John and Francis" of London, 140 tonnes.
What is the evidence linking Aquila Chase with the "John and Francis"?

?Hi well it would appear that there is quite an interest.
Unfortunately the original site was dicsontinued by the host and I
,stupidly, had no back up.
?I still have the Chase/Chace Chronicles which were transcribed by Lonnie
Chase. I have a cd with the transcript and I have ?indexed
them and so that by clicking on a link it will take you to the full article.
Unfortunately the pictures were not included.
?I hope Dick Chase does not mind but a lot of the files were saved by a Web
Crawler he may be able to help you access the site.
?For myself I have managed to trace all my Direct descendants and so am not
looking further.
I issued a lot of copies of the Chronicles to U.S and Canada and maybe some
members of the Group have a copy.
However if anyone wants a copy of what I have I am happy to send a DVD of
it.
?Hopes this helps

I am also still out here, but my focus has changed to concentrating solely
on Harry Chase, the American artist. I have been working on his biography
now for about eight years now. Last fall I completed an extract of the
Preface, Introduction and first four chapters of the book. If anyone is
interested, email me and I can send you a .pdf file. Comments and
criticisms would be very welcome.
Cheers,
Jeffrey

It is interesting to see that a Sarah Chase married a Wingate as it was a
WINGATE who led the expedition in 1629/30 to found the Massachessettss Bay
Company and which, ultimately took over the Plymouth Colony. Wingate led the
expedition on behalf of a Group of "investors" who obtained a Warrant to
allow this from James 1 Of England who was also James 6 of Scotland

Obadiah Chase who was a Revolutionary soldier married Susan or Susannah.
After he died Susan married Joseph Chase as his second wife.
What was Susan's or Susannah's surname? What documentation is there for
this marriage?
Thanks

Hi,
Unfortunately The company that archived the ORIGINAL Chase/Chace web site omitted some files but, in the main these were Photos and images

Is the CHASE/CHACE website you ask about the one someone supplied a link to the archive files? Because if it is then yes, I have looked there but may have overlooked some of the files. I'll go back and continue looking. Thanks!

I'm still here as well. I've been ill and not working on my records much but
still looking for Nathan Chase who married Hannah Weeden in New Bedford. I
have this and perhaps someone here can explain this to me!
CHASE Nathan and Hannah Weston [int. Weeden] of New Bedford, May 23, 1793.
Is Hannah's maiden name Weston and what does the [int. Weeden] mean???? I've
seen the int. used before but have no idea what it means. Thanks for any
help.

?Once again Dick you have come up with the goods,
I should point out that if anyone MALE?is trying to link to CHase/Chace 6 generations or more it is possible that
a mutation has taken place.
?This does not happen to the Female line whose dna from mother to daughter goes on ad infinitum

Go to www.familytreedna.com ; enter Chase in the "Search" box in upper right
corner; select the CHASE project. Click on the project website. In the Blue
Menu Bar, click on Y-DNA Results and selct "Classic" to see a list of the
results of all male members who have had a 12, 25, or 37 Y-dna marker test.
Based on the dna evidence and valid genealogical documentation (or lack
thereof) I have grouped the apparent "proven" Aquila/Thomas and William
descendants, and those whose male ancestry line is of another source.
(Clicking on the "Colorized" rather than "Classic" option yields a similar
list, but with the differences in individual markers for those in each group
highlighted.)
While on the project site, you can read a brief description of what the
Project is all about, and join it if you have any interest in getting a
test. FamilyTree does both Y-dna (male line) and mtDNA (female line)
testing. While a number of female members have had the mtDNA test done, I
haven't tracked the results. Test kits ordered when you join cost slightly
less than their "open market" rates. Anyone with questions can email me at
rachase(a)aol.com .

You are, of course, correct. Excuse the brain freeze. The Chase Project
doesn't track mtDNA results for individuals since maternal lines are
exceedingly diverse, and none who have had that test done have submitted
genealogy documentation that would enable test result comparisons to be made
as we do for Y-DNA for males. Somehow that thinking morphed into males don't
have any of it to test.
So my answer to Tom should be that you can have your mtDNA tested if you
have some reason to want to identify your maternal line dna (mother,
maternal grandmother, maternal g grandmother etc.), but the objectives for
doing so are up to you. It would tell you nothing about your Chase ancestry.

Tom -- mtDNA is passed on from mother to daughter and the test is used for
genetic information on the maternal family line in the same way the Y-DNA,
whhich is passed from father to son, is used for identifying the paternal
line. Thus, the mtDNA test is for females, the Y-DNA test is for males.
(Males have no mtDNA, females have no Y-DNA)
If you are reasonably confident of your indicated lineage showing a
descendancy from Aquila, that is, it is based on appropriate reliable
genealogy documentation, and your interest is in confirming it by comparing
your Y-DNA with others in the Chase Project who are "proven" Aquila
descendants, then as little as a 12-marker Y-DNA test usually can be
sufficient for that purpose. (A 12 marker test by itself is virtually
worthless for establishing a common ancestor, since it is too small a
genetic "sample" to provide by itself a reasonable probability of a common
ancestor even with a 100% match when comparing it with other individuals.) A
24 marker test, of course, would provide stronger evidence confirming (or
rejecting!) a common ancestry with Aquila (or Thomas, if, indeed, they are
brothers as commonly presumed, since their DNA would be the same.)
Let me know if you have further questions.

Is the CHASE/CHACE website you ask about the one someone supplied a link to the archive files? Because if it is then yes, I have looked there but may have overlooked some of the files. I'll go back and continue looking. Thanks!

descendancy from Aquila, that is, it is based on appropriate reliable
genealogy documentation, and your interest is in confirming it by comparing
your Y-DNA with others in the Chase Project who are "proven" Aquila
descendants, then as little as a 12-marker Y-DNA test usually can be
sufficient for that purpose.

I am thinking about testing, My line is Aquila. What test do you recommend,
how many markers? What does mitochondrial DNA testing do for me?

Once again Dick you have come up with the goods, I should point out that if
anyone MALE is trying to link to CHase/Chace 6 generations or more it is
possible that a mutation has taken place.
This does not happen to the Female line whose dna from mother to daughter
goes on ad infinitum

Richard -- I would like to have a look at the DNA chart. Is it posted
somewhere online?
Thanks.
