IMPORTANT LIBRARY OF CONGRESS INFO - THE CORNELIUS CHASE PAPERS -- Received
12/11/2003. I HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE LIB. OF CONG. TO LOOK UP THE INFO.

hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely, Patrick Kerwin, Manuscript Reference Librarian, Manuscript
Division, Library of Congress
MY NOTE: The few papers I received fr. P. Kerwin at the Lib. of Congress,
contain a letter fr. Stephen Chase 4) asking grandson Stephen Slade (above)
to come and help him work his land. They are transcribed by Susan Slade,
his sister, I believe, in 1826, fr. memory. There are legal documents
making claim to his estate by several of his children fr. Esther Buffum, but
not our Benjamin. These show that Stephen Chase 4) died intestate. The
papers still in the Lib. of Cong. have CONSIDERABLE INFO as there are 2 1/2
boxes of info. They contain letters fr,. Ben 5, Ben 6, Cornelius, Lydia,
possibly Phebe Macy Chase too. There is also considerable info re Cornelius
T. Chase's, brother of Ben. Chase 6), involvment in helping the slave
movement and the fact that Cornelius T. eventually becoming Superintendent
of Schools for all of FLORIDA in the 1800's. * 72 P. Kerwin's address is:

Hi All,
Finally getting to send this Stephen Chase letter fr. the Library of
Congress. Guess I should have put (sic) instead of ? marks, but then who
knows when I'd get to send it. It also has a good deal of interesting info
below helping to furthermore substantiate it's validity....... tho the
actual Lib. of Congress letter (a copy, of course) is certainly enough.
Hopes this helps some others who have the same line.

Hello All,
It's really amazing how many connections Ezra Cornell has to the Chace
Family. It's almost as if he was more related to the Chace Family than to
the Cornell Family! I have found till now at least four direct connections
that all descended from Joseph Chase and Sarah Sherman. Ezra's sister,
Lucretia, married my GGG Grandfather, Thomas Chace. Ezra's Grandmother,
Sarah Miller, married Benjamin Chace after her first husband died. So, Ezra
had uncles who were Chaces. Eunice Barnard was Ezra's mother; her sister,
Phebe Barnard, married Benjamin Chase, so their son, Daniel Wood Chase, was
his first cousin. And, in an interesting twist, Thomas and Lucretia's son,
Alonzo Chace, who was Ezra's nephew, married Cordelia Wood who was Mary Ann
Wood's sister - Mary Ann was Ezra's wife, so Ezra was Alonzo's
brother-in-law as well as his uncle. Phew!
Anyway, I made a family tree of all of the connections above and put it at
my website at: http://www.chace.demon.nl/FamilyTree.html Because it has
proprietary Microsoft functionality, it only is visible using Internet
Explorer. I made the tree with the Organization Chart functionality in Word
- worked very well, I think. I made this tree to help sort out the
relationships of some of the individuals whose letters can be found at
http://cidc.library.cornell.edu/cornell/guide.htm Eventually, I will put
links in the tree to the letters written by each individual.
