Well, I was looking at quoted text in one of the other messages and I see
that one word of my message may have been garbled because of a special
character. I was writing that there is a city (well, actually a village) in
France called Chace. But, it seems to have come through as Chac? because the
last letter is an "e" with an accent mark on top. Unfortunately, the name
came through as Chac? and should have been Chace.
Cheers,
Jeffrey

Hi Jan T,
I do not have any dates for Ira, but I do have some other information. Ira
Chase was adopted by John and Betsey Chase. His wife was Susanah Fillmore.
The information was sent to me by Barry & Maggie <prishep(a)telus.net>. The
information is from "Pioneer Families of Grand Traverse County."
Richard
Hi Jan,
I don't have any info for my Ira except the name I got from an Obit.
He would have been born about 1857, using the date of birth for his
wife, so, technically, he would have been old enough for some phase of
the Civil War, even as a fife player, like in Rev. War times or
standard bearer. He may have even been used as a runner or a
"go-for". I will check Civil War records on Ancestry again. I just
have never found an Ira with an Alice yet that is what the obit says
and they were living in Vermont.

Anyone interested in the Buck's Chase Family may like to take a look at the
Banks Manuscripts. I was at the Library of Congress in DC in 2005 and
investigated all of his notes looking for references to Chases/Chaces. I
made copies of the relevant pages and they are posted at my website. Go to
www.chace.demon.nl then click on Banks Manuscripts in the lefthand column
then click on "clicking here" on the righthand side. If you select page 18,
you will find a nice little family tree of the Bucks Chases starting with
Richard Chase who married Joan Bishop. At the bottom you can read Dr.
Banks's analysis.

Hello All,
I sent a message to this list on 5 April 2007 about Zelma Chase and her eye problem for which she was in an Ann Arbor, MI hospital. In an article in the 23 May 2007 Traverse City Herald we find that Zelma is gradually improving. Her expenses to date have been $181, including $17 for board, $9.65 for laundry and 25 cents for smoked glasses. Only $15 remains in the sum subscribed for her care. More will be needed if she will be given back her eyesight.
A reply to the previous message indicated that Zelma was born on 24 Aug 1901 and died in Sep 1981. Her parents were Dominick Chase and Stella Byrum. Although Zelma was a Chase, her grandfather, Ira Chase, was adopted by John and Betty Chase.
Richard
Hi list,
I have my gr. grandfather's obituary. He died in 1931. As survivors,
he mentions his brothers and 3 sisters. One of the sisters was Mrs.
Ira CHASE of Vermont. I have excluded the other sisters as I found
them and their husbands on various censuses. Their surnames were
SWEET and DUNN. That leaves only Alice E. RICHARDSON as Mrs. Ira
CHASE. Alice was born in Vermont to William R. RICHARDSON and
Charlotte TODD in 1857. I have checked every census from 1870
to 1930 and cannot find an Ira CHASE in Vermont or any other state,
who has a wife named Alice. Can anyone help with this riddle? I can
post the obit if it will help. My gr. grandfather was Nelker
RICHARDSON who died in MA.

Oh shoot ..... I thought I had moved that dang tree into private! I know it
is soooooooo totally messed up. When I first started at Ancestry I accepted
every link Ancestry suggested ..... and what an inacurate mess - I only
discovered after it was too late!
Some sections have our ancestors having babies before they themselves were
even born, etc. lol I really need to delete that one and start over from
scratch.
Thanks again Dick - I'll go delete that one right now before Ancestry offers
my information to someone else without them realizing it is all wrong!

Well Put,Dick!
With constant new additions the Group badly needs a system wherein certain
basic concepts such as yours are given prominence.
Another good one is the origin of the CHACE name, which was the subject of
great debate.
I even feel that my own version of the origin of CHASE name needs modifying
as I have discovered there is a CHASSE region in France
which could possibly be the root of the name!
I am now in a position to consider rebuilding the Chase/Chace site but the
data I have is version 1 and does not include the Imagemap,a lot of Census
information and the completed and linked Chase Chronicles,( although I do
have the data for the Chronicles so painstakenly done over many months by
Lonnie Chase and his wife Maryetta).
I have uploaded the Index page of version 1 but just as a test at present.
The search for my Backup of the Chase/Chace site as it was until the latest
crash continues

Keith Hume

Hello Keith and All,
There is also a city in France called Chac? about 100 miles south of the
southern parts of Normandy. Let's say for a moment that the Chace/Chases
came from France and one of the more warlike of them was a soldier during
the Norman Invasion of 1066 under William the Conqueror. Hastings is about
120 miles from Buckinghamshire and is about 100 miles from Wivenhoe. So, it
could be that either the Buckinghamshire Chases or the Wivenhoe Chaces came
from the marauding invaders from France. Yeah, it's a stretch!
Cheers,
Jeffrey

Just want to thank you and others for all the work on the Chases. Maybe
someday, I will find a way back from 1800 in the Berkshires, and connect. (I
can dream.) In the meanwhile, its all fascinating and inspiring. Barbara

Cheers,
Jeffrey

Thank you so much for your reply Dick. I'm very new to researching my family
.... The Chase side is only one leg of this (I'm finding) huge family. lol
My Chase side is through Hannah Chase, daughter of Nathan. She married
Horace Rockwell and their daughter Catherine married James Tennant and it is
from here my line continues.
I'm still researching the Aquila/Thomas inaccuracies. Richard (according to
the parish records) did have an Aquila but I haven't gotten far enough to
place him in London. I tend to document information I have found incorrect
as well. That way I don't have to go back to refresh this old memory on why
I disputed it! lol
Thanks again,

Marjie:
In looking at your (Tennant) family tree on the web, the big error I
immediately see is that it has William Chase (1607-1659) (who m. Mary
Townley) shown as the son of Aquila (1580-1670) and Martha Jelliman. First,
Aquila & Martha had six children, but only one son, Aquila bpt. 1626.
Second, London Parish records very clearly indicate that the Aquila who
married Martha died in London in 1643. It was the American Aquila (who
obviously isn't the London one) who died in American in 1670.

Aquila and Priscilla (or Prisca) are also mentioned in Acts 18:2,18, and 26,
in Romans 16:3, and 2 Timothy 4:19. It is clear that they were stalwarts of
the early church.

My son sent this along. Interesting bit of trivia.
Here you go, this is near the end of the first letter of Apostle Paul to
the
church in I Corinthians 16:19
The churches in Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in
the
Lord, with the church that is in their house.
King James Version
Aquila Chase is my line and there are several Priscilla's in my line also.

Much of the older (and without a documentary reference) genealogy that you
find listed on family trees posted on the web is at best very suspect, and
most often just plain junk. The John Chase bpt 1540 information that you
quote is based on Parish records and is reliable. The other earlier citation
is not.
Perhaps more importantly, your email implies that you are a descendant of
this Chesham Chase line. Since the usual erroneous linkage that Chases in
this country claim is through Aquila/Thomas of Hampton NH, I am very much
interested in how you connect to the Chesham Chases. (We continue to hope
for a male line link for our Chase/Chase genealogy DNA testing.)
There is absolutely no documentary evidence on either side of the ocean to
indicate either who the parents of Aquila/Thomas were, or even from where
they may have emigrated. The usual error is to show the Aquila, (son of
Richard) bpt 1580, as the American Aquila, but we know from the American
Aquila's own sworn court deposition that he was born about 1616. Also, other
documentary evidence very strongly suggests that Richard's son is the Aquila
that lived, married, and died in London. While that Aquila did in fact have
a son Aquila, bpt. 1626, the London Parish records clearly show that he,
too, lived and died there in London. So neither ever made it to America.

I really need some expertise from the seasoned genealogists. Most family
trees for Chase list John b.1455 being married to Alice Harding 1462 in
1479. John had a son Mathew b.1486, who had a son Thomas b.1520 who then had
a son named John b.1540.
You still with me?
Now my problem comes into play ....... recently while going through the:

I find this:
Buckinghamshire: Chesham - Parish Register, 1538-1636 Maried Maried
September County: Buckinghamshire Country: England John Chaase & Alice
daught. of Richard Harding of Slowland 28 Sep 1573
Now since I want to document as much of my tree as possible ...... I find
myself at a stand still .... since I'm trying to figure out the odds of two
Johns in the same family marrying two Alice Hardings almost a 100 years
apart.
Is this possible? I sure hope someone can straighten this out for me.
