Hello All,
Just wanted to let you all know (especially those of you descended from
Joseph Chase, Grandson of William Chase the immigrant) that I have been able
to find a copy of his Last Will & Testament. Joseph Chase was born Abt 1673
in Yarmouth son of William Chase Jr. who was son of William Chase of the
Winthrop Fleet of 1630. Joseph Chase married Sarah Sherman 28 February 1693
and had the following children:
Abigail 6 May 1695, Lydia 18 Aug 1696, Job 21 Aug 1698, Alice 16 Jul 1700,
Ruth 15 Feb 1702, Samson 1 Feb 1704, Isabel 6 Aug 1705, Joseph 11 May 1706,
Stephen 2 Mar 1709, Sarah 1711, then Silas, George, Ebenezer, and Moses for
who there does not seem to be any definite birthdates. These dates of birth
are taken from "Genealogy of the Ancestors and Descendants of Joseph Chase
who died in Swanzey" by Oliver Chace, published in 1874 in Fall River
All of the children except Samson and Joseph are mentioned in the will.
According to the above Genealogy, Samson died unmarried and Joseph died
young, so this would make sense.
Anyway, I was careful to transcribe Joseph Chase's Will retaining the
original spelling and where I was not sure what the word is (the writing is
a bit hard to read) there are question marks in the text. There are also
several uses of the abbreviation "sd" for "said" which took me a while to
figure out.
Since there is mention of Stephen, Silas, George, Ebenezer and Moses all
having to attain the age of twenty-one for certain aspects of the will to
come into force, they all would probably have to have been born on or after
Stephen's birthday 2 Mar 1709 (I say "on or after" because twins sometimes
happen, you know). Stephen was around 15 at the time of his father's will.
Given that Sarah gave birth to children at a rate of one every one or two
years, and that Sarah was born in 1711 according to the above mentioned
Genealogy, Silas was probably born in 1713, George in 1715, Ebenezer in
1717, and Moses, being mentioned in the will as the youngest son, probably
around 1719.
Now, there is a concept of Old Style Dates versus New Style Dates and
administrators during this time would write the date as 1724/25 depending on
the month of the year. I am sure you have run across this sort of thing
doing your genealogy research. I will not go into a lengthy explanation
here, but let's suffice it to say that it is because of the difference
between the Julian and Gregorian Calendars. Interestingly, Joseph records
the date of his will as "this eighth Day of the nint [sic] month Called
November and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred twenty
four." Ninth month called November? Yeah, you see what I am talking about.
Anyway, you can read the whole will at my website at
http://www.chace.demon.nl Just click on "Will of Joseph Chase of Shawomock"
in the middle of the navigation bar on the left of my website. I have
included some images of the actual text at the beginning and end of the will
including Joseph Chase's signature. Shawomock is a bastardization of
Shawomet which is now Somerset, Massachusetts.
Cheers,
Jeffrey Chace

I am new to this list. My line goes from Aquila - Daniel - Daniel - John - Oliver - Christopher - George. I am interested in information on John who was born in Concord, NH around 1745 and died in Conway, NH in 1824. We have been trying to track both his Revolutionary War service and the service of his brothers (Isaac, Jonathan, and Abner who were also involved in the French and Indian War.) Because John is a common name, we have been doing elimination on what we find by cross-referencing at the National Archives and at the New Hampshire State Papers at the archives in Concord. If anyone has information on the services of any NH John Chase's during this time, we'd like to share what we have.
Also, there is a new stone on John's grave in the Russell graveyard in Conway. Because the snow was so deep and icy, we couldn't scrape away to see if an original stone was on the ground. The town didn't have any info but would check for an original stone in April when the mowing starts. Does anyone know about this stone?
Thanks and I am willing to share what we have on our line,
Susan Chase

I am sure that it was just accidentally sent to this email address and was
not intended for us. This is the first time that this has happened in a long
while.

My Chase ancestry (5th ggrandfather) includes Zephaniah Chase, born in Martha’s Vineyard 14 Mar 1748, died Lexington, N.Y., 30 May 1828.
Excerpted from the April 1912 issue of the Chase Chronicles:
Zephaniah Chase’s brother, Benjamin, was a sea captain, and Zephaniah accompanied him on several whaling voyages., although he was a a joiner and cabinet maker by trade. (end of excerpt)
Zephaniah Chase came from Martha’s Vineyard to Green County, New York, in 1787. There is much more information on him, including the Chronicles Vol. 18 Jan-Apr 1928, but not very much on his brother the sea captain. They were descendants of the Thomas line: Benjamin Chase (Abel, Joseph, Lt. Isaac), b. Dec 23 1745, Edgartown; married in Nantucket 27 Feb 1768, Elizabeth Brock, daughter of Thomas and Patience (Gardner) Brock, baptized in Nantucket 13 Aug. 1747, born in 1745. She died in Nantucket, 25 Oct. 1801. Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase, Chase and Chamberlain, p. 491, 498, etc. I believe that Benjamin was mentioned in another issue of the Chase Chronicles, but I can’t remember which one at this time.
Zephaniah Chase lived in Woodstock (considered to be in Ulster County at that time?), later in Lexington, Greene County, N.Y. and in Windham, N.Y.
