Hello All,
Found this nice letter written by Jonathan Chace, former Congressional
Representative and Senator from Rhode Island. It is contained in the volume:
A Family History: Richard Mowry, of Uxbridge, Mass. : His Ancestors and His
Descendants, by William A. Mowry A.M., published in 1878.
Page 115:
The following letter from Jonathan Chace, of Valley Falls,
gives the genealogy of the Chace family from Isabel back
to the first Chace in this country.
"Isabel Mowry, nee Chace, was my father's own aunt,
sister of my grandfather Oliver Chace. She was the third
of eleven children of Jonathan Chace and Mary Earle his
wife. Jonathan and Mary married 5 : 13, 1754, in Swansea,
Mass., and lived in Swansea. They had a daughter Elizabeth,
and another daughter Isabel, which is the Spanish
for the same name. Probably the old folks did not know
they gave the same name to their two daughters."
"This Jonathan was the son of Job, who married
Patience Bourne, 9 mo. 16, 1718. Job and Patience also
lived in Swansea. Job was the son of Joseph and Sarah
Shearman, married in 1694. Joseph died in Swansea in
1725,— a very good man, and prominent member of the
Society of Friends. Joseph had a noble family of fourteen
children ('Go thou and do likewise'). Joseph was
the son of William, who was born in England about 1622,
and came to this country when about eight years of age.
His father was William and his mother Mary.
"The first or oldest William emigrated, it is said, in
company with Gov. 'Wynthrop' in 1630, bringing his
little son as above, about eight years old: He settled in
Yarmouth, Mass., in 1637 or 38, and died there in the 5th
mo. 1659. His will is on record in the Old Colony Records
at Plymouth, Mass., and bears date May 4,1659.
"So thou sees we are not May Flower folks, but go back
far enough not to need naturalization papers. My father
says,' Aunt Isabel was a noble woman, both mentally and
physically.'
Very respectfully thy friend,
JONATHAN CHACE.
VALLEY FALLS, R. I., 1 uxo. 6,1877."

Jesse Hatch 1836-1867 Civil War letters
Writing Home
Some many years ago found at the Raymond Chase home in Randolph Center,
Vermont, were some intriguing items. Patricia Chase Allen realized the
importance of them. They were letters written by Jesse Hatch to his father
and brother, Amos Partridge Hatch and
Abel Hatch, ( of Norwich, Vermont). Jesse, was attached to the 27th Co. of
Iowa. Pat transcribed these letters as a college project while at Castleton
State Teachers College, 1962-3. The late Raymond Chase's mother was a 5th
generation Hatch of the original settlers of Norwich.
The papers were kept within the Chase family all these years. Now, the
survivors, Patricia Chase Allen and Harriet Chase, feel that the best place
for these letters would be in a historical museum where they can be enjoyed
by others. So, they have gone back to Norwich, Vermont.
There are twelve letters. The first one tells "brother Able" that Father
starts for Vermont tomorrow. Though Jesse, is a resident of Mitchell Iowa,
he still feels as though Norwich is his home. He often asks for family and
expresses concern that the elders in the family will be taken care of.
Some mention is made of where he is (in the battles) and is a bit of first
hand Civil War information. Mainly they relate to a young man "way out
West", longing for home and family. The letters show a bit of Yankee homour,
when he quips; "tell Father to write. I can read you know". There is also a
bit of finesse when he address his father, saying; "having a leisure hour I
thought I would improve it by writing you a letter"
Jesse did not have an easy time of it. He, like many, caught diseases during
encampments. A notation on one of the official war records, says he was a
straggler. (Jan. & Feb. 1864). He was arrested March 10, 1864. At this time
it was understood that he had been sick with typhoid and could not get back.
It would appear the matter was cleared up for in Aug. 8, 1865 he was
discharged as 2nd Let.
In the last letter to Abel, Jan 10, 1866, he tells that he has been / is
very sick, unable to do anything, even to hold his hand steady to write.
He died in 1867.
Quoting Nancy Osgood, president of the Norwich Historical Society: "Thank
you for entrusting to us Uncle Jesse's letters. What treasures you have
given us! There are so many important Civil War references. ..... Your own
careful transcriptions and copies of military records are invaluable...."
".... You really have given the Norwich Historical Society a huge gift.
Jesse was obviously such a sensitive educated individual. His love of family
comes through in each letter. His observations about the military, officers,
the South, and Norwich are marvelous and will excite many historians. I
assure you we will care for them in the best possible way and will make sure
that Civil War researchers are aware of their presence."
