One spectacular century

FALL RIVER -- Call it genetics or call it luck, because Mae Chace doesnt
have any explanation for living through an entire century.
"I dont feel like anything. I feel young," said Chace at her 100th
birthday party at the North End Senior Center Tuesday.
It was quite an occasion. Chace was presented with a gigantic birthday
cake to share with all her friends at the center, who in turn gave her a
special, crocheted money tree. Then, it was a dinner of franks and beans
-- her favorite -- and a round of Bingo.
Chace plays Bingo at the center three days a week, and on Sunday nights at
the Ponta Delgada Club.
A Somerset resident for the past 92 years, she spent many years working in
local sewing shops.
Chace still lives on her own at Kennedy Terrace, an elder housing complex.
She moved there at age 92, the same year she stopped driving her car. She
does her own grocery shopping, though she gets a ride to the store now
with her daughter.
She takes no medications, save for a fluid pill and vitamins, and is on no
special diet.
"She eats anything she wants. She has a glass of wine once in a while,"
said her daughter, June Truver, 70.
Chace said it was hard to believe her daughter, a retired bookkeeper, was
70 years old.
"Shes catching up to me," she said.
Chace has another daughter who is 68, and 11 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. Her husband, Gordon, died at age 69. They were
married for 39 years.
Truver said longevity does not run in her family, and her mother has never
been a health nut, though shes never been a drinker or smoker either. She
was diagnosed with cancer 50 years ago, which resulted in the loss of one
of her breasts.
At the senior center, Chace had smiles for everyone on her birthday. Mayor
Edward M. Lambert Jr. was there to wish her a happy birthday and read a
proclamation.
"Look at her. God bless her," said Lambert. "We all want to know your
secret."
Chace had no problem blowing out her candles. She stood up from her seat
to say: "I want to thank you all. Youre all good to me."

Hello All,
Another letter that I have run across recently. Tells of
Chace/Cornell/Miller Genealogy.

Undated. Most likely 1860. Written by Mary R. Powell to Elijah Cornell.
Dear Uncle,
For several years I have been engaged in collecting information respecting
our ancestry, I wish thee might have an opportunity of perusing what I
have obtained. Thinking thee might be interested in so doing. Benjamin
Chace and Rhoda Upton were married 1770. Benjamin Chace and Sarah Cornell
were married 1777. Elijah Cornell and Sarah Miller were married 12th mo
4th 1769. Benjamin Miller was born 1707* (*The wife of Benjamin Miller
was named Mahetable). They were the parents of nine children, Charity
born 1729. Benjamin born 1731. James born 1733. Patience born
1735[?]. Rachel born 1738. Mehetable, 1740. Robert born 1742. Mary
born 1744. and thy Mother Sarah, born 1746. I find the date of thy
birth to be 10th mo. 17th 1771 but have not learned the date of the birth
of thy brother Ezra Cornell [ed. NOT the Ezra of Cornell University this
is his Uncle]. If thee knows or can procure the date of Uncle Ezras
birth and will send it to us, I shall be very much obliged to thee. We
have today recived a letter from cousin Ezra [this IS the Ezra of Cornell
Univ.], the family were well. He is just now very busy, was about to
start for Albany. Very Respectfully thy neice Mary R. Powell.

Hello All,
I just ran across this very interesting letter and thought I would share it
with you. As with the Legend of the Chase Family Fortune of England, it
appears that these scams were being committed on other families as
well, including the Cornells. It seems interesting to me how this same kind
of legend is still perpetrated today in the form of internet hoaxes from
Nigeria concerning millions of dollars that need to be smuggled out of
Africa. Does anyone know anything of Nacissa, Artemas Cornell, or E.R.
Cornell mentioned in the letter?
Cheers,

My dear Cousin Narcissa,
I received a letter from you dated March 18, which came duly to
hand. We were sory [sic] to hear that you had been very ill, which was news
to us, but we are gratified to learn that you are so much better now.
I have been unwell for several days, but feel better now, the
rest are well.
You mentioned in your letter about that great fortune in
contemplation said to come from England and to descend from a certain
Cornell that married an only daughter against the wishes of her Father, who
is said to have made a will and willed his property to the heirs of the
third generation from said Stephen Cornell.
The property is said to be where the City of Leeds stands, the
land is rented and the proceeds placed from said lease in Bank, the real
estate and money is said to be worth from sixty to seventy millions of
dollars, perhaps more so the story goes. It is said the notice was
published in the N.Y. Day Book, so I have been told.
The genealogy of the Cornell family, have been traced back to
Stephen Cornell of Swanzey Mass. I have just received a letter from Cousin
Artemas Cornell stating taht the Estates Registry in London had been
searched and that a large amount of property was found to belong to the
descendants of a Cornell Family. Without giving the given name. I have
writen [sic] a letter to the Editors of the N.Y. Day Book wishing them to
send the Notice of that property and I would pay them well for trouble
&c. Whether
there is any money that we shall fall heir to or not, I am not able to say.
I think there is a pretty good prospect of receiving something. Ezra
Cornell of Ithaca N.Y. claims to be a second cousin of my fathers. I have
receiv'd several letters from him. With his photograph. He has made a very
great donation to the Agricultural College of N.Y. to the amount of about
one million of dollars. It is called the Cornell University.
I must come to close – Give my love to Emma and Mr. Peters, from
your affection [sic] Cousin.
E.R. Cornell
Leta,
I live in St. Louis and have been watching your messages about Wallace F.
Chase. This past month, the Missouri State sites archives section, just added
a new section of deaths from 1910 to 1950's.
I looked on it and found your Wallace F. Chase, died in March 1949 in St.
Louis City, certificate #9893.
The site is so popular, that you currently, my not get a copy of the record,
sent to you. But they are working quickly to get copies of all the
certificates on line. So far they are up to the 1910's.
Here is the web site so you can access it.

Leta,
I think your Wallace Fairbanks Chase was the son of Charles Fairbanks Chase.
Maybe someone on the Chase list knows more about him.
I found Charles F CHase with son Wallace F Chase in the 1880 census of
Waltham, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Wallace's age would be about the right
age, and his father's middle name seems to suggest this is the right family.

By the way, I found the following family in the 1911 Census; this family
seems to be same family that you found in 1920 census of Wayne, Michigan:
27 227 Chase Wallace M Head M Feb 1879 32
28 227 Chase Margret F Wife M May 1871 40
29 227 Chase William M Son S Nov 1903 7

31 227 Jollimore Gladys F Domestic S Sep 1895 15

You can view the original census page at the following website; it indicates
that Wallace was born in Nova Scotia, a minister, and his religion was "D.
of Christ"--whatever that means:

I hope this helps you.

No, W.F. or Wallace Fairbanks could not have been that old. My guess would
be, maybe he was born in late 1870's, early 1800's. Wallace F. Chase
married my step grandmother in November of 1948, at the Odd Fellows Hall in
St. Louis, Mo. Since both were in their seventies, the application for
license to marry and the marriage certificate did not show any birth dates
or ages of the couple. However, there were two witnesses who signed their
names on the bottom of the marriage certificate. One was, Charles F. Chase
and the other, William E.B. Chase, who may have been his sons.
I did find a 1920 census, taken in Wayne Michigan which shows , Wallace F.
Chase b/abt. 1980, in Maine, Margaret, (wife), b/1881 Nova Scotia, both
parents born Nova Scotia
with two sons, William b/1904 Massachusetts, and Charles b/1908 Organ.
Margaret may have been his first wife.
This may be the family, and correct W.F.Chase I am looking for, but have no
way to prove my find. My step-grandmother was Mamie E. (Powers) (Smith)
Chase. The couple had only been married several years when Mamie returned
to her home town and told everyone Wallace had passed away. No one in the
family has ever been able to know for sure if Wallace passed away or they
were separated. I have never been able to find anything on Wallace (no
death notice, or death certificate), nothing since receiving the marriage
license and certificate. It was all very mysterious and Mamie wasn't
talking. Mamie died in Maryland 1960.
Wallace had to have had family somewhere. I do have photographs of Wallace,
also a photo of Wallace with two women and a young man. These could have
been his family, but there are no names or dates on the photo's.
Any breakthrough on Wallace would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Leta

Sorry, Wellington Chase's middle initial was A, not F.
A book entitled "A Pictorial History of St. Paul's Anglican Church" has two
of his photographs:
PL. XIII : Wellington A. Chase, Barrington Street, looking North, ca.
1860(?).
PL. XV : Wellington A. Chase, View of the Chancel of St. Paul's, 1859(?) -
1868.

LIFE SIZE PHOTOGRAPHS. -- W. Chase, No. 159 Hollis
Street, opposite Club House, Halifax, has now in use
at his Gallery the latest and most approved Solar
Camera in the city of Halifax for enlarging all styles
of small pictures. Those having Daguerrotypes,
Ambrotypes, and Photographs of their deceased friends
and relatives can have them enlarged up to life size,
and furnished at a lower price than at any other
gallery. Mr. C.'s experience in Photography enables
him to give the public a more artistic style of work
than can be obtained elsewhere in the city.
Because of the following, reference, I assume W. Chase was Wellington Chase.
He may be connected to W. F. Chase or H. N. Chase who were also living in

As concerns any Chase/Chace living in New Brunswick about 1830-1840...you
might want to look up the family of James P. Chase (George Bedford4 Walter3
Benjamin2,William1)
The are all part of my family as James was a brother of my great
-great,great. great .grandfather Greenfield Chace..
As my research has shown before..James was a Tory and did not want to be in
the Revolution and went to News Brunswick and married Betty Douglas on 15 Jan
1766..they had 12 children.. they kept the spelling of their name as Chase
My relative Greenfield..all born as Chases..Changed their name to Chace
after the Revolution..and this is the spelling on the graves in Freetown..
I think Jeffries Chase is connected to James..

He was a carpenter by trade and settled in Roxbury until 1637 when he moved
to Yarmouth.
In 1640 he was censured for misbehavior and ordered to leave the town
within 6 months.
June 6 1654, he was before the council for driving a pair of oxen, 5 miles
on the Lord’s Day.
In 1657, he was chosen one of the surveyors of the roads of Yarmouth.
His will may be found in the Old Colony Record. It is dated May 4th 1659
and leaves 1/3 of his estate to his eldest son and the rest to Benjamin. The
eldest son was slightly feeble minded.
The widow, Mary Chase died so suddenly that an inquest was held over her

FUNERAL OF PIONEER
WOODLAND (Yolo Co.), February 5 - Samuel U. CHASE, an old resident of this
county, died at his home in Capay Valley Friday night. Deceased was a native
of New York, 89 years of age. Mr. Chase started for the West in 1843, and
first settled in Oregon. In the party with which he started was Peter H.
BURNETT, first Governor of California. In 1845 Mr. Chase came to California.
He afterward made several trips between this State and Oregon, finally
settling in this county in 1886, where he resided until his death. Mr. Chase
never married. The funeral was held yesterday from his late residence.
I would highly recommend to you all a relatively new book published just
this year: "The Widow's War" by Sally Gunning. Although the name Chase is
not mentioned, and the book is set at Point of Rocks, Brewster, Satucket
Village, the heroine of the story is one Lyddie Berry - and of course, the
Chases married into the Berry family and vice versa.
"In a small Cape Cod village in 1761, one woman is about to engage in the
struggle of her life, defying her friends, and neighbors in a fight for her
freedom that resonates even today......[ 39 year old] Lyddie has long [ 20
years] been the wife of Edward Berry, a well-liked and successful
whaler....But when the unthinkable does happen and Lyddie finds that she
must bear not only the grief of losing her husband, but also the insult of
losing her autonomy. As a widow, she finds herself cast into society's
cellar, her property and her rights now at the whim of her nearest male
relative." This is the way to make learning history exciting and personal
as one really learns about the customs and mores of the times and what dower
rights really mean.
I bought an autographed copy of the book in Chatham, MA in early April - and
saw it just last week in my local Barnes and Noble bookstore in Los Angeles.
Also, another interesting book just released and reviewed in today's NY
Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/04/books/04masl.html?_r=1&oref=slogin ):
MAYFLOWER
A Story of Courage, Community and War
By Nathaniel Philbrick
Illustrated. 461 pages. Viking. $29.95.
As many of you may remember, Nathaniel Philbrick wrote the wonderful book
"In the Heart of the Sea" about Owen Chase and the loss of the whaleship
Essex, upon which tale Herman Melville based his book "Moby Dick".
I haven't read this book as it has just been released - but I certainly plan
to!

Ruth asked: <<<<<Does anyone out there know if the cemetery where Wm. & Mary
Chace is buried, is where anyone can see it ?>>>
As Jeffrey has said, there is no indication or the exact spot where the
immigrant William Chase and his wife Mary are buried on Cape Cod. I believe
the oldest known grave of a William Chase descendant is that of his
great-grandson, Thomas who was the son of John, son of William Junior.
Thomas (d. 11/20/1767, aged 88) is buried in the Ancient Cemetery of
Dennis.
However, in the West Harwich Baptist Church Cemetery on Route 28 and Depot
Street, Harwich, there is a striking black marble memorial to William the
Immigrant. William is not buried there, but this is a descendant's tribute
to the Founding Father of our line in America. There are several other
Chases buried there, also.
A good site to reference is http://www/capecodgravestones.com - and then
click on Cape Cod Cemetery Lists - Mid Cape (Yarmouth, Dennis, Brewster,
Harwich, Chatham) - where you will find listings of many of the gravesites
of those Chases who remained on Cape - primarily of course, those
descendants of William, Jr. and his son John's progeny: William, Thomas and
Jeremiah.
If you do have a chance to, you should by all means visit Cape Cod, just to
get the feeling of where our ancestors first lived (after William came from
Roxbury to settle on Cape Cod).

Hello to All,
Does anyone out there know if the cemetery where Wm. & Mary Chace is
buried, is where anyone can see it ? I am "thinking" of trying to get to
Mass. and maybe get some pictures of the cemetery and any other Chace places
around that area, for my scrapbook.
If there is nothing to see, maybe I won't try the trip. I just would like to
know if anyone has been out there and maybe has seen the area. I'd sure
appreciate any thoughts on the area.
Thanks in advance

Hello Ruth,
I was in Yarmouth and much of Cape Cod last year and even took a journey out
to Nantucket. As far as I know, there is no record of where Wm and/or Mary
are buried. I did stop by the Ancient Yarmouth Cemetery and there were some
Chases, but no Wm nor Mary. I also visited Bass Hole near which the Chase
family is said to have settled in the mid 1600's. There is a boardwalk
there that goes out over the marsh which is quite nice. Even if the graves
are not able to be found, Cape Cod is a wonderful area and a drive on 6-A
Highway is wonderful (not 6, which is the main thoroughfare, 6-A runs
parallel to it through all of the little towns). Here is a nice map of the
Cape:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtoh...

I went by Sturgis Library in Barnstable and investigated an interesting
genealogy of the Chase family that was precipitated by a request of a lawyer
to do a title search back in 1925.
http://www.sturgislibrary.org/resources/special/archives/chase.php The
document was very interesting, but did not really shed any new light on the
Chase Family for me. If you do go to Cape Cod, make sure you go by Plimoth
Plantations which is a realistic mock-up of Plymouth Colony in the year 1627
three years before the arrival of the Winthrop Fleet. It is a very
interesting "living" museum and give's one the feel of what it must have
been like to live in Massachusetts back at the time William and Mary Chase
lived in Boston and Cape Cod. Also, make sure to stop by the actual town of
Plymouth and visit the Plymouth Rock and the replica of the Mayflower (no,
Wm and Mary did not arrive on the Mayflower, but it is a ship of similar
size and build as the ships that were in the Winthrop Fleet). You can get
an idea of what their nine weeks on the Atlantic must have been like in such
a vessel.
Nantucket is a wonderful little island and the Whaling Museum there (as well
as is the one in New Bedford) is wonderful. You can find the grave of Owen
Chase (of Whaling Ship Essex and Moby Dick fame) near the town of
Nantucket. Owen's house is also still there.
Of course, if you are going to go to that area, you must also visit Boston
which is a wonderful city. Make sure you walk the Freedom Trail and visit
Faneuil Hall, Bunker Hill (Breed's Hill), the USS Constitution, the Old
North Church, The Granary Cemetery (Paul Revere, Sam Adams, Benjamin
Franklin's Parents, John Hancock, etc), Boston Common, and of course the New
England Historical and Genealogical Society is absolutely fantastic. It's
in the Copley Place area on Newbury Street.
I would recommend a visit to Providence, Rhode Island, and to Fall River,
Massachusetts as well. Providence is a wonderful little city and the Rhode
Island Historical Society is located there on Hope Street. Fantastic
collection of records from all over New England and especially Quaker
Records. It is the repository for the New England Yearly Meeting Archives.
A visit to the North Burial Ground Quaker Cemetery will reveal many Chaces
and the Swan Point Cemetery is simply beautiful as well as containing the
graves of dozens and dozens of Chaces and Chases.
In Fall River stands the Lizzie Borden House. Well worth the visit. It is
now a Bed and Breakfast and you can actually stay in the room in which
Lizzie's stepmother was murdered. A husband and wife own the house now and
give tours.
I know it sounds like a lot of driving, but Massachusetts and Rhode Island
are so small that the drive between Boston and Providence is less than an
hour and the rest of the locations I mentioned are all very close.
Anyway, if you want to know anything else, let me know. I have only found
the graves of all of my Chace ancestors back to William's great-great
grandson, Joseph, who was born in 1762. Before that (Moses, Joseph, William
Jr., William Sr.), I have no idea. But, I do have copies of all of their
wills except for William Jr. The wills can be found at the NEHGS in Boston
on microfilm.
Cheers,
Jeffrey
