Claremont folklorist Charles Chase, 89
CLAREMONT - Charles Chase, a folklorist and poet whose eclectic Folk Music Center became a destination for musicians, literati and the curious alike, has died of a stroke. He was 89.Chase died May 21 at the Mountain View Alzheimer's Center, his daughter, Ellen Chase, said.
His fascination with musical instruments from around the globe led him to open the Claremont center nearly a half-century ago. Over time it came to include a music store, repair shop, performance stage and school, as well as a museum that contained several hundred antique instruments.
Chase allowed customers to play all the instruments in the center: antique Tibetan temple horns, American banjos, Polynesian conch shells and African tongue drums as well as new guitars and drums.
A kindred spirit of folk music legends Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Chase led a weekly program for schoolchildren for more than 20 years, demonstrating how to play the instruments.
"My grandfather loved sharing the music," said Ben Harper, a singer-songwriter who worked at the center repairing instruments until his performance career took off. "Without my grandfather, I don't think I'd be doing what I do."
Chase's interest in music was matched by a commitment to social causes and he spent much of his adult life fighting for issues dear to his heart the environment and the rights of underdogs.
Raised on a farm in New Hampshire, Chase graduated from the University of New Hampshire at Durham and went to work as a schoolteacher. After moving to California, he eventually left teaching behind after opening the music center in 1958 with his wife, Dorothy.
Artists, musicians and international students from the nearby Claremont Colleges often found their way to the shop. Until recent years, he left the back door of the center unlocked to make it easier for friends to get to his office.
Chase is survived by his wife and four children, along with 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

As an adoptive Briton, I agree. I, like many others here, did not
like the
way Bush got elected but about half of America wanted him so he is the
man
with the biggest job in the world, ( many of us think TOO big a job).
The pity about Iraq is that a few nations are doing the job the whole
UN
organisation should be engaged in.
Enough If you read this, Margaret, remember we are all entitled to
our own
views and it is sometimes not easy to suppress them in a group
dedicated to
such things as family history. I have been tempted, many times, to ask
if
the Americans among you could explain thing in the U.S. which are
incomprehensible to many of us here in the U.K. but have resisted the
urge.
I hope you stay in the Group,

Let's just get over it. Can we get back to genealogy now, please?
Below is what I sent to Margaret privately after she asked me how to
subscribe. It is certainly not "hate mail." We're all adults here, and
sometimes that means you must have thick skin. Mistakes can be made of
course, but to run away after one error seems a bit dramatic.

Margaret,
To unsubscribe, you must send a message with unsubscribe as the subject to
Chase-L-request. However, then you only punish yourself by unsubscribing for
you never have to post if you need not. The choice is yours.

I am trying to find out about the parents and siblings of my grandfather Elbert William Chase. He was born in Marshalltown, Iowa about 1883. His parents could not support the family so grandfather, and possibly other siblings, were given out to other families. Grandfather was about 5 or 6 years of age when he was given out to a foster family.
Grandfather was so bitter about the breakup of his birth family he would not talk to his children nor grandchildren about his birth family.
If anyone has grandparents or great grandparents from the Marshalltown area born in the 1870's or 188's I would like to hear from you.

You know it saddens me to think that members of this list would send hate
mail to someone who made a mistake. Are you perfect and don't make
mistakes?
She realized her mistake and posted apology, doesn't that cost for
something. Plus think back to when you first joined a genealogy mailing
list did you know what was right and wrong in posting? How would you have
felt if you made a mistake and people sent you hate mail?
In the future if you think something shouldn't be posted address me not the
poster, I'll address the poster on what's right and wrong.
Thank You,
Lisa Martin
At the request of Steve Chase I am posting this 2nd e-mail he sent to me.
