Remember Isaac Chase who married Lois Smith whose mother was a Native
American? I have a 13 page booklet dated 1908 naming Isaac's children and
their descendants. The title of this book is "1908 The Chase
Association," naming Solon Chase as president and stating the by-laws of the
association.

Does anyone know of any connections between the Chase and Linnell families
in late 1700s or early 1800s?
My great great great grandfather was Thomas Chase, born abt 1792. The first
record of him is his marriage on January 29, 1822. It states "Thomas
Linnell, Bachelor, of this Parish, Mariner, at Martin's River, and Elizabeth
Legge, Spinster, also of this Parish, daughter of William Legge, of Martin's
River, Farmer, were married at Martin's River, by Banns, with Consent of
Parents. By me, James Shreve, Deacon, & Missionary. In the presence of
John Hiltz, Roger Aitken." There is no evidence that Thomas or his parents
were from Nova Scotia. His wife's parents were from the area.
Death records from the Old Anglican Church in New Ross state that "Thomas
Linnell (often called Chase) died in New Ross on 27 February 1868, aged 76,
and was buried on 29 February 1868 by Mr. Pratt, layman."
We assume he was pressed into service during War of 1812, escaped in Nova
Scotia, and changed his name to avoid detection. When he felt safe, he began
using his own surname. Eventually all the family used this surname.
I am wondering why Thomas chose surname LINNELL. This is an uncommon
surname. Perhaps he had a relative or friend with this surname.

Could someone look up Thomas Chase, born 20 March 1792, son of Nathaniel
Chase and Mary Brown, and grandson of Thomas Chase and Mary Dow? I am
wondering when Thomas died and if he married.
My great great great grandfather was also named Thomas Chase. I have tried
for years without success to find his parentage. The first record I have of
him is when he married in Nova Scotia in 1822. He likely was born in USA,
but died in Nova Scotia on 27 February 1868 at age of 76, making him born in
1791 or 1792. I am wondering if he could be Thomas Chase above.
Some people have assumed my Thomas was son of Ebenezer Chase and Rebecca
Cheney because their son Thomas, born in 1792, went to sea in 1811 and never
returned. However, there is no proof.
Also does anyone know of any other Thomas Chase born in 1791 or 1792?
Thanks,
Linda Chase

Pam,
I found your Herman indexed as Heman Chase in the 1860 census (Ancestry.com). Heman was a Chase family name that was often noted as Herman. [FYI -- I come from the James Chase line that moved from the east coast to Wisconsin in the mid 1800's.] I've printed the page & would be happy to drop it in the mail to you. You can email me privately at slheider(a)aol.com. Info is as follows:
Lebanon, Grafton County, New Hampshire, pg 95, July 1st, 1860
Herman Chase, age 59, Nail Maker, Real Estate value 550, personal estate, 125. born in New Hampshire
Clarissa Chase, age 57, wife, born in Vermont
Orilla Smith, age 67, housekeeper, born in New Hampshire
Ira Chase, age 36, Mail Agent, born in New Hampshire
Emily Chase, age 38, wife, born in Vermont
Oline J, age 11 (female), born in Vermont, attended school
Helen E, age 9, born in New Hampshire, attended school
Abby F, age 7, born in New Hampshire, attended school
Hopes this helps.

I just got a copy of the marriage certificate of my grand parents RICHARD and MAUD SARAH McCRACKEN DOWNING who were md. on 27 November 1895 at Sturgis,Meade County,South Dakota by Wm.S.Chase,City JP.I do not know anything more about him. Clyde
Thanks Lonnie for the map and info.
If you look at that map...the area called the "Tide Mill" is the approximate
area where Acquila and Ann lived on the Hampton river. I think it was at the
Hampton Library that I found this out. I went to Hampton and followed the
roads around the common....and then over to the beach. They lived at what
was later called the Perkins Tide Mill. Acquila sold that land to his
brother Thomas, who later sold it to Perkins.
At The Great Boars Head( see the map) was a cellar in the 17th century where
the fisherman brought in their fish.
It was while living in Hampton that Acquila, Anne and Daniel Wheeler were
accused of "picking pees" on the Sabbath.
And there is a legend that the ghost of the witch Goody Cole walks the
Common at Hampton. Eunice Cole...who came over on the Mary and John with the
Wheelers....was accused of being a witch and thrown in jail. I guess she was
kind of a cantankerous, foul mouthed old woman who told her neighbors off
with some repeatedy. She lived out at the end of what is now Island
Path....but toward the end of her life...the good citizens of Hampton were
ordered by the court to care for her. When she died.. they dragged her body
out of the hut near the Common where she lived....drove a stake into her
heart to peg her spirit to the earth...so she wouldn't come back to vex
them...and buried her in a shallow grave near the Common...no one knows
where to this day.
In 1938(?), the descendants still living in the Hampton area held a ceremony
to re-instate Eunice as a citizen of Hampton and to overturn the charges of
witchcraft against her. Eunice and her husband now have a rock among the
Founders at Founders Park. There is also a huge rock with no plaque on
it...just across the road from the circle of rocks on the Common with all
the names on them....that someone placed there as a memorial to Goody
Cole....no one knows who put it there.
Hampton was like a second home to me growing up in Massachusetts. I've been
trying to convince my husband to move back to the Maine/ New Hampshire coast
for years. I miss the smell of those salt marches.

Hello Dick,
Thanks for your suggestions. I should have told you that I've been trying
to solve this Willis CHASE mystery for nearly 30 years. This is what I
know; One record states that he was born in Warsaw, NY about 1813. 1840
census shows him with first 3 children born in Wheatland, Monroe Co. NY. In
1846 he moves to Hamburg, NY which later became West Seneca, Erie Co, NY
where three more children were born. According to son's Civil War pension
records Willis died in West Seneca in 1861after a long illness. He is not
buried in the cemetery plot with his wife and unmarried son. They were very
poor so he did not have a will. I would love to find out which part of the
Chase family I belong to...perhaps the ones who came from New Hampshire and
settled around Orangeville, NY. I'm running out of clues. Would appreciate
any help or suggestions. Thanks again,

Hi Ruth,
I am an example of someone who is stuck in New York in 1819. However, by
having my DNA run, I match up with those men whose DNA not only match mine but
whose ancestor is William Chase of 1630.
I now know which tree to climb but the 1819 brickwall remains to be knocked
down.
Good Luck

To anyone who has patience with this old lady,
In one of Jeffrey 's emails lately, he remarked about the fact that someone had proved by DNA that they were on the right "tree"! How far back can you prove that? This is all beyond me! Is there a way to prove that we could be related to someone, say William Chace who came over in 1630, after all these years? If so what do you have to do?
By the way, I love the stories that Jeffrey and others send along. You are all so smart!
