Subject: [ROOTS-L] An Amazing Story
Dear Rooters, My Aunt sent me this Amazing story about a poor Scottish
farmer and what came from his heroism.
His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day , while
trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from
a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to the
waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free
himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and
terrifying death.
The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse
surroundings. An Elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced
himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. "I want to repay
you," said the nobleman. " You saved my sons life."
" No, I can't except payment for what I did," the Scottish farmer replied
waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door
of the family hovel.
Is that your son? the nobleman asked.
"Yes," the farmer replied proudly.
"I'll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own
son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he'll no doubt grow
to be a man we both will be proud of." And that he did. Farmer Fleming's
son! attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary's
Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout
the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin.
Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was
stricken with pneumonia.
What saved his life this time? Penicillin.
The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son's name ? Sir
Winston Churchill.
A nice story but unfortunately only another "urban legend" that's been on here before. Check out this web site:

Dave, I am sorry to report that all John's in the History
predate1880's. I also looked in Seven Generations for a John with a
birth date of 1818 in Haverill with no success. I will keep your
posting alerted to your dead end. Have you asked for look up's of birth
or christening records in Haverill? Also his death certificate might
have his parents names. Meg
I received a new book for Christmas and am willing to do lookups
The History of Haverhill, Massachusetts, From its first settlement, in
1640, to the year 1860,

May not be getting their mail from Rootsweb. I'm a little confused with
the message I just received from AOL but looks like it's considering
Rootsweb as Unsolicited Bulk E-mail. I can't find anywhere on their site
that has a copy of the blacklisted sites.
Till Rootsweb and AOL works things out, then those members may not be
receiving their email.
Just thought I would let everyone know,

Wow so am I right in believing that we probably had several in the Chase
lines that were doing things that were consider Witch things???? I thought
I read somewhere that a few Chase's were tried as Witches in Salem!
Just wondering I've heard the stories in my NY lines and have always been
lead to believe it was those darn Cook's but now I wonder if the stories may
included some Chase's too.
Not sure if many of you know this but there was a Spiritualist camp in NY
known as Cassadaga, located near Buffalo New Year. I found this out tracing
down my gggfather Cook and that he was a spiritualist. Also interesting is
that there is another camp with the same name not far from me here in
Central Florida.
Hummm now to look in to these Chase's of mine...

Hello Roanne,
Thanks for bringing the book "Underneath the Banner of Heaven" to my attention. I am a John
Krakauer fan and have read "Into the Wild" and "Into thin Air," so, another Krakauer book is now on
my reading list.
You may be interested in the post I made in November of last year about another book containing
information about Joseph Smith and the Chase family of Palmyra, "The Refiner's Fire: The Making of
Mormon Cosmology, 1644-1844" by John L. Brooke.
It can be found at the following link:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CHASE/2003-11/1068990043
This link has another email I posted about the subject matter:
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/CHASE/2003-11/1068991012
It seems that the Chase family in question descends from William Chase as follows:
William, William, Joseph, Stephen, Benjamin, Clark (father of Willard and Sally)
Cheers,

Palmyra and surrounding area. Didn't think I had it right when I typed it. Is a site here that some may/be interested in re Clark's son Asa , Seer Sttone and Jos. Smith. I found this new info being sent interesting. Always learning MORE!!!!!!!!!!
I have a lot of my own notes written in here......re finding solution to this PUZZLE!!!!! You don't need to read if not interested, of course!
GENERATION 5
*********BENJAMIN 5) CHASE , (Stephen,4 Joseph,3 William,2 William1), born at Freetown(*) 29 Jan. 1737, died 20 Mar. 1826. He married first, about 1757, ELIZABETH DURFEE, born 12 July 1735, died about 1776, daughter of Job and Elizabeth (Chase) Durfee;
and secondly, Benjamin m. on 19 Feb. 1777, (as her fourth husband), MEHITABLE THURSTON, b. Nov. 1743, d. 1813. (Fr. Quaker Meeting Records thru NEGHS, same place info on Phebe Barnard was found, it states: Chase: New Britain, Mehitable Thurston Chase, dt. of Johnathan Thurston & Lydia Goddard, d. 10 Jun 1816, age 75 yrs). Her 1st husband's name is unknown per ELIZA STARBUCK BARNEY NANTUCKET records, 2nd was Cornelius Coggeshall, s. of John Coggenshall, Jr. & Elizabeth Freeborn & they had a dt. Elisabeth Coggeshall b. 1766. It states Mahitabel Thurston #17355 m. unknown, Statement @ Vol 177, pg. 4 reads Mahitable m. ______ Chase & had a son Cornelius who m. Mary Swain, dt. of Alburtus. It states that this is in conflict w/ Vol. 1, pg. 244, 246 & Vol VI, pg. 189 stating she m. Coggeshall above. (My Note: Yes, this would be in conflict w/the above. Actually, Starbuck's records must be confused as was easy to do w/all of Mehitable Thurston's marriages......tho I imagine she lost!
husbands to death. Yes....., she did marry Benjamin 5) Chase. She & Benjamin 5) Chase had sons Cornelius who m. Mary Swain above and they remained in Chatham, NY., and Benjamin 6) Chase Jr. who lst m. Phebe Barnard Macy, (she lst m. Aaron Macy and had 2 children: Aaron and Judith Macy - after Aaron Macy's death .......and I have this info someplace which I found just the other day under GOOGLE - abt. 11/9/03 ----, and after her (Phebe's) death, Benjamin 6) Chase Jr. m. her blood neice, Lydia Macy. These 2 families of Benjamin 6) Chase are below under Benjamin 6). I ALSO saw someplace that she m. a .............(can't remember lst name now Davis ----- meaning Mehitable who m. Benjamin 5) Chase.
Mehitable Thurston m. Cornelius Coggeshall, 1 Dec. 1763, had 1 child, a dt. Elizabeth (Elisabeth) , b. 27 Aug 1764, Mehitable then m. 2nd Daniel Wood, 5 Oct 1769. She then m. Benjamin 5) Chase, Feb. 19 177, to whom she was m. to for many! yrs. until her death at age. 75 in Chatham, New Britain, Columbia Co.,NY, per the NEHGS records which info you will see below under Benj. 5) & Mehitable.
This may actually turn out to be only 3 marriages tho it is said Benjamin Chase was her 4th husband, but this has no proof. Source: 1. Abbrev: Ancestors of John Trip The Founder, Title: Ancestors of John Tripp The Founder, Author: Herman Tripp, Publication: http://usersohiohills.com/bobt/tripp/Herman/, email : spring45(a)wccta.net. This is fr. Armstrong Family: francescha(a)earthlink.net. I have been in touch with an H. Tripp who states his sources back up this info..... which seems likely. see next re this...
Per Morrison Family Tree: roonierella(a)cox.net, Susannah Chase, dt. of Stephen4) Chase and Esther Buffington, and was b. 1 Jan 1733/34 in Swansea, MA, d. 19 May 1765, Westport, MA. She m. Daniel WOOD b. 14 Nov 1729 in Dartmouth, MA. They were m. 30 July 1753 in ???,prob. Dartmouth, MA, had child Johnathan Wood, b. 9 Dec. 1760, in Dartmouth, MA. The EXTREMELY INTERESTING THING HERE IS: Susannah was the iv. child of of Stephen and Esther, and Benjamin5) Chase was the v. child of same parents, b. 29 Jan. 1737. Susannah was b. 1 Jan 1735 & m. 20 July 1752 per Chamberlin's Some of the Descents of Roxbury and Yarmouth which is correct info. THEREFORE it would seem REASONABLE that since Mehitable Thurston Chase who m. Ben 5, names lst son after her lst husband Cornelius Coggeshall, & 2nd one after her husband Benjamin 5, that Benjamin 5's son Benjamin 6, might name his son after a favorite uncle, DANIEL WOOD..............solving the mystery of where the name of Daniel WOOD CHASE cam!
e from......! Not verified tho.............and I sure would like it to be!!!!!!!!!!!!
NOTE: Larry Macy: LCMacy(a)hotmail.com states that Benjamin 5) m. Mehitable UNDERWOOD. Must check into this. Possible missing husband for Mehitable Thurston. (BELIEVE UNDERHILL IS WRONG!), BUT YOU NEVER KNOW!!!!!!!!!!

Per Bonnie on the Chase-L List: This ancestor Abel Chase contributed some testimony toa work regarding Joseph Smith and the origins of the Book of Mormon that was in direct conflict with L.D.S. history. Hi all ..........and Rick Edwards.......this w/be of interest to
you!!!!!!!!,
Sending this along cause I know there are some who relate and also this may
help others in locating ancestors.
I had been in touch w/a Macy who had Lydia Macy dying in NJ. REALLY seemed
ODD to me.........but THEN............ I remembered this gal who has same
line but thru Lydia Macy.........(I descend fr. Phebe Barnard Macy who m.
Benj 6 Chase.....first), AS YOU ALL PROBABLY KNOW BY NOW, since I've written
the list a # of times re this. Lydia was niece of Phebe. This gal, who
WILL NOT JOIN THE LIST...........much to my DISMAY, had told me that several
of Ben & Lydia's dts. started a school in Newark.....! Believe it was
Eveline and Gelina who started the school. Lucretia became a Dr. after
having children, and wrote "Dream Within Her Hand." My line is SO FULL OF
TEACHERS.........and pastors I'm beginning to learn. Also very anti
slavery. Jeffrey: I STILL HAVE TO CHECK to see if it is your Elizabeth
Buffum who m. my Chase............!!!! Durfee is also here...........! I'm
not sure if this is the Durfee who was a Dr. or the one who was named after
a Dr. Durfee Chase of Palmyra in my 25 pg. Chase notes......!
NOW....if I could ONLY FIND WHERE PHEBE is buried. I suspect that she is
buried in Chatham on the property of the Old Chase Place , also called the
Ghost House. She would have d. before leaving that area. Unfortunately,
nobody in the Chatham/Hudson area can find her!!!!! Meant to go there to
look at property which vonBehr rennovated beautifully, and meet w/Mrs. von
Behr, but my situation prevented it..... Besides my reading the book"Ghosts
in Residence," the incidents she told me that she witnessed herself are past
incredible and soooooo very interesting. Ben 5 may have started the school
there, which was later run by 1st son, Cornelius.......and it was his dt.
who was the benevolent ghost who d. of TB at age 32 and was buried on the
property under her favorite oak tree. Almost m. Phineas Gurney who taught
there and later became A. Lincoln's personal DR. and was w/him when he died.
BUT........she didn't believe in preachers getting paid MONEY!!!!! Rather
sad. She also wrote a book.
This is the Wm, Wm, Joseph,Stephen, Benjamin, Benjamin line....
Sure enough, here they all are:

While listening to Jon Krakauer's book, "Under the Banner of Heaven", this
caught my attention:
The family of Joseph Smith, founder of the LDS church, moved to Palmyra, NY
from Vermont when Joseph was about 12 years of age. At about age 14 Joseph
was interested in "money digging" (looking for buried treasure in ancient Indian
burial grounds).
Having heard of the divining talents of Sally CHASE, whose family lived near the
Smith family farm, Joseph went to call on her.
Sally CHASE possessed a "magical" rock, a "peep-stone" or "seer stone" which
allowed her to see anything however hidden from others. Sally's "peep-stone"
was a small greenish rock. When she met with Joseph Smith, she place her
"seer-stone" in the bottom of an upturned hat then instructed Joseph to bury
his face in the hat so as to exclude the light, when Joseph did so, he was
treated to magical visions.
Roanne
This is an excerpt from the October 1919 Chase Chronicle and the only
mention, that I have seen,
of George Walter Chamberlain, co-compiler of the "Seven Generations" book.
Old deeds are often quite difficult to decipher. They were frequently
written by persons of limited education, and the spelling of many words,
(which was probably incorrect even then), is often very different from the
spelling of today, some letters are of singular shapes, and in punctuation
and the use of capitals they do not follow modern rules, and these
peculiarities sometimes make it hard for the ordinary reader to understand
just what was written. Such was the case with this deed, but, fortunately,
a friend of our Association, Mr. George W. Chamberlain of Malden, a member
of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, an expert in such
matters, came to our aid, and very kindly made for us a translation of the
deed, retaining its quaint spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc., a
copy of which we give below. Mr. Chamberlain says that, in his long
experience, he has never seen so ancient a deed, which indicates that, in
this document, we have a real historical treasure, whose existence dates
back to less than thirty years after the landing of the Pilgrims at
Plymouth.

From "What's New on Cyndi's List" recently; five CHASEs are listed.
Happy hunting!

Hi I received an email talking about Biographies and gedcoms but accidentally deleted it together with the load of spam I get.
Could you please send again!

Hi,Jeffrey,
Sure I will show you the Greenwich. They now have a Research Centre I have
not been to yet. The view from the Park is still one of the best of London
For the general information of the Group. The kind of information they have
is amazing. Lloyd's List is a daily paper published for over 200 years that
shows the movements of all Lloyd's registered ships from launch to break up.
The last time I was there I looked up a micro-filmed item and was staggered
as the crossindexing has all been done by hand!! No computers. If you
cannot get a picture of a certain ship and you are really keen you can get a
copy of plans and surveys produced by Lloyd's for Insurance puposes. Details
and Llod's gradings are shown.
I obtained the complete history and plans of the ship my great grandfather
went out to Australia on in 1832

All,
I have never known the Chase list to be so quiet so I thought I might dream up a few topics to get the thoughts moving away from the fog of Post Party Reriod.
Here are a couple I would be interested in.
1) What are we all doing with tghe mass of information we have gathered? We ought to be putting it into some coherent form such as
a) A hard Copy Book
b) A Cdrom/DVD
However I, and I am sure some others, have found or will find this not just daunting but difficult to decide precisely how. For my own part I have taken the same attitude as the Meander River of biblical reference and taken the course of least resistance, which also happened to be the most interesting line. i.e the CHASE/Hume line almost to the point of leaving my Mother's side out,(but not quite).
So you budding or experienced authors how about sharing with us how you have ,or propose to, set about this task.
If anyone knows of some really good books on the subject I would be interested.
In my next email I will say what I have done for part of my Chase descent. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is tieing it all together so that at all times it appears to lead to the ultimate namely....... YOU!
2) A second idea which I would hope will spark some interest and aid our learning would be to ask members of the Group to post there Genealogical "Wish List". I do not mean something really specific as" I cannot find my great grandfather" but more like" My Grandfather was a Seaman/Blacksmith/ or what have you", "Grandmother loved Quilting were there clubs or associations" ( In actual fact there were)., "Anybody know of a programme that will assemble my book as I want", ( I am positive someone will known that!).
Recently an Aussie Cousin asked me if I could find information on the ship his g.g,grandfather went to Australia on in 1865.
With a little luck I could as I live only 3 miles from the world's best Maritime Library at Greenwich. ( I even got a picture of a painting of the ship)
We ALL have some knowledge others do not posess let us see if we can share it better,
Well there you go

Hello Keith,
I don't believe that there is anything wrong. I just don't think much is
being posted lately. However, I can share with you that I have put some
new Chace Family Photos on my website at http://www.chace.demon.nl and have
also fixed all of the links to the scanned images of Chace Family Letters -
links to both of which can be found in the navigation bar at the left of my
website. There just doesn't seem to have been much posted lately. A lot
of the folks who used to post quite a bit have dwindled in their emails.
But there have been quite a few new folks that have added new information
over the last few months.
I think that, just as with my research and level of involvement, the list
is busy for a time and then slacks off until the next "hot" topic comes
up. What might that be?
Oh, here is an interesting one. I recently discovered that I am related to
Benjamin Franklin as follows
Peter Folger b. 1618 in Norfolk, England was Benjamin Franklin's maternal
grandfather.
His son Eleazar Folger b. 1648 in Edgartown, Mass was his son, he married
Sarah Gardner
Their daughter, Sarah Folger b. 1676, married Anthony Oder.
Their daughter, Elizabeth Oder b. 1703, in Nantucket, Mass, married
Jonathan Mooers (Moores).
Their daughter, Elizabeth Mooers b. 1723 in Nantucket, Mass, married Daniel
Coleman.
Their daughter, Phebe Coleman, married Ruben Barnard.
Their daughter, Eunice Barnard, married Elijah Cornell.
Their daughter, Lucretia Cornell, married Thomas Chace, my Great Great
Great Grandfather.
You can see the relationships above in the following letter from Elijah
Cornell to his brother Ezra Cornell who were both brothers of Lucretia
Cornell:

(N.B. you may have to cut and past the first half of the link above into
the address area of your browser and then add the second half to reassemble
the entire link. My email program seems to cut long links in half and then
they don't work properly).
