> WASHINGTON (June 5, 2003) -- The Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA)
> has revised its application form to make requesting a VA grave marker
> easier. The new form, Application For Standard Government Headstone or
> Marker (VA Form 40-1330), includes updated information about changes that
> expand eligibility for a government marker. The new form and instruction
> sheets also permit better communication between VA and veterans' families.
>
> For deaths on or after September 11, 2001, Public Laws 107-103 and
> 107-330 made government markers available for use on veterans' graves that
> were already marked with privately furnished headstones or markers.
> Previous law prevented VA from furnishing markers when a grave was already
> marked.
>
> The laws require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to report to
> Congress by Feb. 1, 2006, on the effectiveness of this benefit and to
> recommend whether it should continue. One of the changes made to the
> application form will allow VA to report on this new benefit by tracking

> the fax number, 1-800-455-7143, are on the VA website at www.cem.va.gov
> <http://www.cem.va.gov/>. The application form on the website can be

Hi All,
I received this from a pal who had no idea I was related to this individual. Some of you also related may well be interested too. I can't vouch for its accuracy and am just fwding it for what it's worth.
I'd be interested if any of you could correct or add info to it. I'm especially interested in the statement, "Charles and his mother were also descendants of John of Dorset, who came to America in 1643." Also the statement that "he attended college, all paid for by income from a house at the University Club in New York City, which his mother owned." Did he attend college in the US. If so, where????
AT THE END OF THIS THERE'S ALSO A MESSAGE FOR JEFFREY CHASE as I can't seem to email him.......
It was something he was proud of, and he said so many times. Charles was a descendent of the great Iroquois nation. It came from his mother’s side of the family, and he dearly loved his mother. He often said that she shone for him ‘like the evening star.’ Charles and his mother were also descendants of John of Dorset, who first came to America in 1643, so their heritage was long and firm. You should know that Charles loved to paint, and he was quite good at it. His paintings hang in museums and art galleries world wide to this day. He painted under the name of Charles Moren, and you’ll know his paintings because they are all signed simply with his initials. He was always a bright lad. He attended college, all paid for by income from a house at the University Club in New York City, which his mother owned. And although he was a prolific painter, he was even better known for other things, like his writing. He wrote often for Life and Collier’s magazines, not !
to mention a volume of work on politics and government. As a matter of fact, he even won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his writing. But it was painting that was his real passion. He created over 500 paintings in his life, one for President Franklin Roosevelt and many others for world leaders. Now, there are a few things that you do know about Charles. He was a great leader of men and nations. Charles was a student of history and military, too. He took very special interest in the Civil War. He said that in his opinion ‘General Robert E. Lee was one of the noblest Americans who ever lived and one of the greatest captains known in the annals of war.’ And Charles should know, he became a leader in war himself. He was captured by the Boers in South Africa during the Boer wars. General Blackjack Pershing said upon meeting Charles that ‘he showed a keen interest in military plans and affairs and I found him to be exceptionally bright and informed.’ and that was!
back in 1917, when Charles was still a pup! Charles fell in love and married Clementine Hozier. He was honored on a Columbian stamp in 1945, and a US stamp in 1965. But we really don’t remember this man for his painting, or his writing, or even the fact that he died on the same day as his father. But we do remember him. His life is studied by students everyday in this country and around the world. Oh, you know him, this descendant of the Iroquois Indians, this son of a New York woman, this man who so affected the world that no one will ever forget his deeds and accomplishments. But you probably didn’t know he was an American Indian by blood. He was also an American, made so through an act of Congress and the President. It’s a Little Known Fact that the man who stood strong in his country’s darkest hour, the man who made famous the immortal words after a fierce battle in the sky’s of his homeland: “never have so many owed so much to so few.” That man, a dire!
ct descendant of an American Iroquois Indian, was Winston Charles Churchill.
Dale Robertson
Jeffrey,
I have received info from a Cornwell descendant who states that the correct name is Cornell. If you remember you told me a long time ago that the names were both often used for the same family. My gr gr grdfather Daniel Wood Chase m. Lydia Monroe Corwell who this party now says is Lydia Cornell. They are buried in Mt. Hope Cem. in Rochester. I have pictures. Chase and Cornwell/Cornell shared a lot, and I have a copy of the lot and who is buried there.........and just noticed that the signature on the Cornwell half is signed Daniel F. CORNELL....! She says my info jives w/hers, but I have been unable to get her info as yet. Just thought you might like to know and hear your thoughts on this. I don't know if I'd ever have the time to trace this ALL back.... I've been very busy on my Carpenters on which there is an absolute ton of info, especially cause I am a direct line descendant of both Wm. of Providence RI, who came with Roger Williams, and also to Wm of Rehoboth.

I am interested in Harriet Chase b abt 1820 NY; dau of David Chase and his wife Lucy (Maxson) Chase.
Harriet Chase married John Worden, possibly in the area of China, Wyoming Co, NY or Yorkshire, Cattaraugus Co, NY.
I descend from John Worden and seek information regarding their marriage and death date and location of Harriet Chase Worden.

Deb,
I don't know if there is more than one Arkansas branch of Chases or not but
see if any of these names are familiar...
Rayma Lou Chase (my Mom) b 1939 to:
Raymond Arthur Chase 1920-1995 and
Marie Josephine Sefcik 1922-1999 (I think, don't have Gma's info in the
'puter yet)
Ray had a brother Jackson and they were born to:
Arthur Bertram Chase & Alice Arizona Graves
Arthur had 2 sisters, Lottie & Bessie, and a brother Harold.
They were born to Charles Madison Chase & Ida May Haskins.
These are the Arkansas Chases that I know of. I've got more info if they're
who you're looking for. Charles, Ida May & kids moved to Arkansas from Cook's
Valley Wisconsin around 1908 if I remember rightly. It's been a while since
I've time to genealogize and I miss my favorite pastime. Let me know if these
are the right folks and I'll look up all the correct, confirmed info that I
have.

This is an excerpt from William Gould's Chase genealogy.
LINCOLN AND CHASE
Though it is probably true that these two great men had a common
ancestor, yet it is equally true that neither of them knew the fact. Away
back in 1680, there was a man John Whitman, who lived near the present
meeting-house in North Weymouth, Mass. A daughter Sarah married Abraham
Jones of Hull. Their son, John, born 1669, married in 1693, Sarah, who had
a daughter Alice, 1694, who married Daniel Corbett of Mendon, to which place
her father had removed.
The daughter of Daniel and Alice Jones was Alice Corbett, born 1733,
and she married one of our ancestors, Dudley Chase, who later lived in
Cornish, N.H. Their son was Ithamar, born in Cornish, 1762, who in turn
married Janet Ralston, and on Jan. 13, 1808, to them was born Salmon
Portland Chase, who as our kinsman, was Chief Justice of the United States
and Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln.
John Whitmans daughter Sarah, who married Abraham Jones of Hull, had a
daughter Sarah, who married Mordecai Lincoln of Hingham. Their son Mordecai
married Hannah Salter, and had a son John. This John Lincoln had a son
named Abraham, keeping the old family name, and he married Mary Shipley, and
had a son Thomas, and this Thomas Lincoln married Nancy Hanks and on Feb.
12, 1809, to them was born Abraham, who became President Lincoln. Thus both
the President and the Chief Justice came from Abraham Jones of Hull, and
John Whitman, of Weymouth.

Hi,Ginger,
I do not know why the addresses did not work as I thought I gave you the correct ones.
As I recall you were trying to re-join the Chase list so I am copying this to ,(I hope!) Lisa Cleversly/Martin so she can give you details. In the meantime I will try to find my "Welcome to the CHASE-L list" email that has all the details of subscription and unsubscribing.
In the meantime I am, ( and I am sure I write for many others), delighted to see you back with us again

The Chase addresses you gave me hae been returned. Wonder what is wrong there.

While converting Lonnie Chase's transcription of the Chronicles, among the wealth of information and sage advice, I found this :-
"ARE OUR FAMILY GENEALOGIES CORRECT?
The October number of The Chronicle contained several genealogical articles sent us by various . contributors which elicited words of praise from interested readers. But upon the other hand, two of our members most familiar with the Chase genealogy have sent us letters of criticism for admitting to our columns genealogical statements which, as they claim, are erroneous or misleading.
One of them writes: "This number and another have so many errors that the publication loses force as an authority, and, worse than that, it will form a basis of copying errors of which there are too many already."
Another says: "Your correspondent has merely copied something that some one else has promulgated, and so long as it can be found in print, no matter what the source, there will be enough who will pass it along. For instance, that Thomas and Aquila were brothers is a well substantiated fact, but that they were sons of Aquila, the son of Richard, is one of the unproven things, and so on to the end of the chapter."
These comments and criticisms illustrate and emphasize the difficulty of writing a family genealogy which shall be, in every item, accurate and reliable. This difficulty was very ably stated in an article in The Chronicle for January, 1912, entitled "Concerning Gravestones," contributed by our former editor, Mr. Wm. E. Gould, one of the best informed and most accurate genealogists, in our Association. In that article, it is clearly shown that family bibles, family traditions, old gravestones and even church records and town records are not invariably correct, and sometimes contradict one another, and Mr. Gould, in conclusion, well says: "This. is the moral of the story, when you are looking up a person's dates-birth, marriage, death, or whatever it may be, don't depend upon any one book or statement. Go through with the whole thing, and in many cases you will find differences. Sift these differences out by other means, and you will probably get the right res!
ults."
This is excellent advice, and if the editor of The Chronicle had the time and means to follow it, it would, perhaps, be possible to keep out of our columns every genealogical statement which is not absolutely accurate and reliable.
But, when it is remembered that, to verify or establish a single item in a family history some times requires hours and even days of research and more or less expense for correspondence, and. that many of our ancestors were men and women in the ordinary walks of life, concerning whom, in those days of loose and incomplete records, any very full or accurate statistics would have seemed hardly necessary, it is manifestly impossible for us to verify each and every item in the contributions which are sent for our columns. The names of the contributors are given, and we assume that they have carefully looked up the authorities before writing their articles. We intend not to publish anything which is erroneous, and if in any of our articles any statements appear which seem to be at variance with the facts, we should like to receive for publication, articles in reply showing wherein an error has been made.
In such cases, the authorities for the correction must be cited, for mere denial proves nothing, and we must adopt the legal attitude that the original statement is correct until, by the citation of contradicting authorities, it is shown to be otherwise.
If any of our readers have discovered any apparent errors, we should like to hear from them at once."
END OF EXCERPT
