Jan,
You are very welcome! Wish they had been able to come up with the
definitive link between your Sybil Anthony and Ander Anthony and Sybil
Chase. Still it looks like you are on the right track. Now you need to
scour records for Sawnsea, Rehoboth and surrounding countryside. Once you
make the connection, you'll tap into the William Chase/Chace line!
Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Subject: RE: [CHASE-L] Sybil Chase
Jan, thank you so much for carrying my query over to the CHASE list. I have
so little on Sibbel ANTHONY that any clue is priceless. What I do have is
the marriage record in Rehoboth, 4 Sep 1793, and birth records for Sibbel &
Asa's children - all surnamed SMITH, all listed in the records of Dighton,
Bristol Co., MA, but all entered on the same page as though at the same
time:
Salley, b. 6 Mar 1794
Asa [my 3x Great Grandfather], b. 5 Mar 1796,
John, b. 26 Jun 1798
Polley, b. 10 Feb 1801, d. 22 Aug 1802
Polley, b. 10 Feb 1803
Seth, b. 1 Feb 1805
Patty, b. 10 Jan 1807
Jonathan Anthony, b. 11 Jan 1809
Lorane Ann, b. 10 Apr 1811
Are any of these names ones that seem to run in the CHASE families?
There would be 16 years between the birth of Salley and that of Lorane Ann,
so a 17 year gap for Abner & Sybil [CHASE] ANTHONY would be entirely
possible. Between marriage age - say 18 - and menopause in the mid to
late 40s, a woman has potentially 30 years during which she can bear
children. My 3x Great Grandmother Julia Ann [CLARK] DUNHAM, had her
first child at 19, in 1834, and her youngest, my 2x Great Grandfather, at
age
44, in 1859. And I still remember my college roommate's mother who had
two babies while Annie was in college!..
Thanks again..

Thank you Lonnie, Harriet and Jackson. I will forward this info to the
interested party, Jane Devlin. Now all she needs is Sybil and Abner's
children to make the connection into this whole branch of the William Chase
line!
Based on the following from Arnold's Vital Records of Rehoboth (from LDS IGI
record), looks like Abner Anthony, and perhaps Sybil, moved to Rehoboth by
1777, after the birth of their first two children in Swansea in 1760 & 1762.
It is possible that the following Abner may be a child of Abner and Sybil's
born later in life (17 years of childbearing is still well within normal
bounds, if she lived that long!), or he could be from a second marriage of
Abner's. Wonder how old your Sibbel or Lilebell ANTHONY was who married Asa
SMITH of Dighton, 4 Sep 1793? If 17-18, she could have been a slightly
older sister of this Abner! The LDS didn't have any other siblings listed
in Rehoboth, though ...

This looks like an IGI entry, possible. If so, the John D CHASE would be a

Hi,
Did you know there is a brass rubbing in Middlesex County England of a
WILLIAM CHASE? I discovered it when looking for ancestors names on brass
rubbings. The web page listed hundreds of names of brass rubbings, but, alas,
no pictures of them. The William Chase rubbing was dated 1544 which would
have been after he died. I know this is too early for our William Chase, but
it might be a clue as to his origins.
The rubbing is located in the parish of Isleworth. Here's the address
for the page.

Hello all!
Being in the antique/collectible business I am always looking through
boxes of "stuff" at yard sales, flea markets, etc. I recently came across a
book JACK AND THE THREE SILLIES told by Richard Chase. Is anyone familiar
with the "JACK tales" ???
According to information I found in my research of this book the Jack
tales" were a collection of folktales that were handed down from one
generation to another in the Southern Appalachian Mountains and they all
centered around a colorful character named Jack.
Does anyone know how this Richard Chase fits into our line?

Lonnie,
I wanted to let you know that I got a call today from the gentleman who
heads the Sutton, Mass. Historical Society.
I sent him the info you send me about Isaac Chase and he is looking into it.
One thing he mentioned ....which did ring true.....is that he found the
statement from the "Chase Chronicles" article about there being a "paucity
of slate" in the area of the mill to not be very accurate.
You can dig up slate pretty much anywhere in Millbury and Sutton. My comment
was that they may have descrated the graves because the slate was already
cut into the size they needed for the walls in the mill....and it may have
been convenience rather than paucity. The old Indian burial ground is still
there though.
Be interesting to see what he finds out.
And by the way....his wife is descended from Aquilla through a branch in
Maine. :0)

Hi Chase Listers,
Some of you may be interested in the following information posted on
another list. The information is about Rev. David I. Chase. Evidently he
was the son of William Chase (Stephen, Joseph, William, William) and
Sarah Jess (George, Joseph).
The following was posted on Nova-Scotia-L list by Phil Vogler.

Reminiscent And Historical
The following clippings from the Messenger and Visitor (now the Maritime
Baptist) of May 10, 1905, refer to the lives and death of Rev David
Chase and his wife, in the year 1844, of whom reference was made in an
item in last weeks issue of the Register. Mrs. Mansfield Nichols,
granddaughter of Rev and Mrs. Chase, has requested us to publish these
clippings, which should prove of great interest, especially to the older
settlers of Western Kings.
Rev. David Chase
(Messenger and Visitor, May 10, 1905)
Often when reading accounts of the lives and grand deeds of departed
ministers, such as William Hall, Dr. Welton, and others, my mind
invariably turns to one noble man of God, and the wife also being worthy
of such a husband. This man was the Rev. David Chase, the first person
granted a license to preach from the Second Cornwallis (now Berwick)
church. His wife was Jane Morse, a sister of Daniel Morse of Nictaux,
after whom her son, also D. M. Welton, was named. No family, I think,
is better known today in the Annapolis Valley among Baptist people.
Old Mr. Daniel Morse of Nictaux was grandfather of Rev. L. D. Morse, of
Wolfville. One sister was Mrs. Sidney Welton, mother of Dr. Welton,
another, Mrs. Abel Parker, mother of Rev. D. O. Parker and Rev. David
Freemans wife. This makes Mrs. Parker grandmother of Mrs. L. D. Morse,
also of Mrs. Dr. Trotter of Acadia.
But the one of this family that my letter is especially intended to
bring before our minds is gone, the baby of the household, who became,
at the age of seventeen, the wife of the Rev. David Chase, left her home
and went to a distant part of New Brunswick. In those days it seemed as
far away as the North West or British Columbia does now. There at
Jemseg this noble couple, rich in faith toward God, worked and prayed,
forgetting their own health in their anxiety for the salvation of
souls. In many places there were no carriage roads and they went on
horseback through paths in the forest. Twice Mrs.. Chase took her
wedding ring off her finger and put in the mission box because she had
no money to give. The ring was dear to her heart as her husband knew,
and once he planned and bought it back, but the second time it had to
go. How many would do the same today?
After eight or ten years of hard work, exposure and anxiety, broke the
strong constitution, and the faithful child of God laid down the cross
and went to receive from his Master the crown. The young wife could not
stand the blow (though she thought of her four little ones) and in less
than two months they laid her beside her loved one. Mr. Chase died
March 24th, and on the 22nd of May the same year, she closed her eyes to
earthly scenes to behold the glories of heaven.
Over the graves of this devoted couple the church erected a beautiful
monument with told how much they thought of them. One of the sons died
at the age of 22. Another son is doing business in England. The two
daughters, one Mrs. Jonathan Sanford, the other Mrs. Reuben Loomer,
still live in Weston, a branch of the Berwick church. Two gentlemen
asked Mrs. Sanford for her fathers license to preach, as they wished to
place it in the museum of Acadia College, I suppose it is there today.
DEAR EDITOR: - I have read with interest the sketch of my uncle the Rev.
David I. Chase in the MESSENGER AND VISITOR of May 10th. His paternal
home was in Welsford, a few miles northward from Berwick. In my early
boyhood I remember him visiting my parents, feeble and wasting away in
consumption. I send you as a relic of the past a copy of the License
given to him in the old Pleasant Valley meeting house seventy-one years
ago. I am holding the original, in the Rev. Wm. Chipmans hand-writing,
and characteristic style of composition, with a number of other relics
for the Acadia University museum among which is correspondence of Rev.
Wm. Chipman and his son Isaac, when Isaac was a student at Waterville,
Me., and his youthful autobiography, and journal when a student, and the
last letter he wrote to his father, pleading for the college a few days
before his untimely death in Minas Basin.
LICENSE OF THE 2ND BAPT. CHURCH FOR BRO. D. I. CHASE
These may certify that our dear brother David I. Chase a member of the
2nd Baptist church in Cornwallis having improved his gifts for some time
past in Prayer Exhortation and Preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ,
that being satisfied that he has public gifts, do now license him to
improve the same in manner as heretofore and wherever the Lord in his
wise providence may be pleased to direct his steps. And our prayer to
God is, that he may be directed in infinite wisdom, and guided by his
Holy Spirit into the mysteries of Redemption, and prove himself to be a
good minister of Jesus Christ, and his labors of love hereby be
abundantly blessed of the Lord.
Signed in behalf and by order of said church,
ALFRED SKINNER.
Done in Conference, 26th July, 1834.

Lonnie,
Cool stuff, that which you posted. But, only one reference was made to the
Chases - "in a book called The Lawrence, Chase, Towneley Estate: The
Mystery Solved."
Not too many Chas(c)es. Towneley? What about Townshend? Could William
Chase have been the unrecorded, unimportant, and unrequited love and husband
of Lord Roger Towhshend's daughter? That would, indeed, explain much.
No inheritance is desired. Only a way to make real what history is still
there.
Had Roger Townshend a daughter named Mary? So no, no bother. So yes, why
not pursue this name?
Cheers,
Jeffrey Chace

Jeffrey, The post was not made to reference any Chases, it was made
to show that the name,
"Mary Townley," was associated with several other families in
connection with a fortune
myth. Her name appears as the wife of William Chase in many
genealogies. She also appears as the wife of John Lawrence and
Joseph Lawrence and she shows up in the Herbert family and probably
others as well.

An attendance list and a list of officers at the
1911 and 1912 reunions of the Chase/Chace Association.
THE TWELFTH REUNION
July 1911
The 12th Annual Reunion of the Chase-
Chace Family Association, was held in Provi-
dence on Thursday, June 29th, at Elysium
Hall, corner of Broad and Union streets. It
was attended by about 100 members of the
family, 79 of whom registered. The weather
was fair, but quite warm, which fact might
have prevented the attendance of some who
would otherwise have come. There were
present representatives from six different
states, but the bulk were from Southern New
England, and the William Chase descendants
predominated. It was one of the most suc-
cessful gatherings of the Family ever held.
At 9:30 the social hour began, followed by
the formal program at 10.30. The first business
was the report of the Treasurer, Omar P.
Chase, and showed a larger amount of money
received for promoting the interests of the
Association than in any previous year, and
the Treasurer also reported the largest ex-
penditures of any previous year, the heavy
expenditures being largely for the publication
of the "Chronicle."
Owing to the gathering at the same hour of
the New England Educational Association,
his honor, Mayor Fletcher, who was to have
made the address of welcome, was forced to
be absent, and in his place Mr. Frederick A.
Chase of Providence, as representing the Prov-
idence members of the family, welcomed the
assembly.
The meeting opened with the singing of the
following original hymn by Alfred Bunker of
Roxbury, Mass. :
0 God of our fathers in years long ago
Their Guardian and Guide across the broad
main, Be with us, their children, here gathered today.
>From near and from far assembled again.
Be with us and bless us, but not us alone :
Bless also the absent wherever they may be,
>From ancestors few, they to thousands have
grown, And are scattered abroad o'er this land of
the free. We honor our kinsfolk, their virtues we
praise As statesmen or clergy, or citizens true,
May we be as worthy, and honor the name
In all we propose, and in all that we do.

following parting hymn, written by Charles
Lord Chase, of Hopkinton, N. H. :
0 Thou, whose own are we,
Kin of one family,
A Pilgrim band,
Who now upon life's way,
To cheerful greetings pay-
The gladness of today,
United States!
Grant us, this parting hour,
Dear Lord, thy precious dower,
Of faith to roam
In this fond, sacred tie,
That each to each draws nigh,
Till we with rapture spy
Thy House-our Home.
There we shall ever be,
Blameless at rest in Thee,
And love benign,
While neither doubt nor care
Invades the peaceful air,
And all in transport share
The joy divine.

Hello All,
I have just this week received a copy of the obituary of my Great Great
Great Grandfather Thomas Chace. Dr. Thomas Hamm at Earlham College in
Richmond, Indiana, assisted me in obtaining a copy of the obituary from The
American Friend magazine. It is posted at my website and I have done quite
of bit of editing and have added some other new material.
I began this week on Monday editing my website through the prompting of the
obituary which arrived curiously and exactly ontime, exactly as it must
have, because the day before, 4th mo. 14th, was a Sunday and therefore I
could have received no mail. Travelling forward from the past as if to
celebrate a remembrance forgotten in time and arriving exactly 157 years and
one day after the death of his wife Lucretia, the obituary of Thomas Chace
showed up on my doormat prompting me to edit my site and once again revisit
the lines of a poem written about Lucretia's death. Hmmmm.
Obituary of Thomas Chace, Quaker
>From The American Friend, Third Mo. 28, 1895 p 308.
CHACE. - Died at the home of his daughter, Rebecca C. Potter, near Shawnee,
Johnson county, Kansas, Second month 5th, 1895, Thomas Chace, in his 88th
year. He was born at Douglass, Mass., Eighth month 31st, 1807, was a
birthright member of the Society of Friends, and for over fifty years was a
member of Providence Monthly Meeting, Rhode Island. The eldest of the
family, he was the last to be called home. Since 1878 his home has been at
Shawnee, and he has been an elder in Kansas City Monthly Meeting since its
organization. Thomas Chace lived a life of exemplary Christianity, and he
was venerated and loved by all who knew him. His Christian testimonies,
while not many, were definite and clear. He always expressed a hope in his
Saviour and a consciousness of cleansing through the blood of Christ.
Without any particular inllness he gradually grew weak, and after a
confinement to his bed of only a few days yielded up his spirit as gently
and peacefully as comes sleep to a little child.
The poem about Lucretia's Death.
Lines by a Friend to the memory of Lucretia Chace who departed this life 4th
mo. 14th 1845
Rest happy soul thy rest is come
Thy conflicts now are o'er
Thy crown Immortal now is won
and thine forever more
Thou now can sing the song of Praise
Amid that Blood wash'd band
The blessed song of Ancient days
For Canaan's Glorious Land
Our hearts are sad that thou art gone
The babes thou has left behind
With the lov'd partner of heart
Our sympathy shall find
For them our hearts are raised in Prayer
That they may reach that land
and with our Dear Lucretia there
Join the Blood wash'd Band
Where sighs & sorrow never come
Where tears are known no more
But where His children find their home
and God's Great Name adore.
Cheers,
Jeffrey Chace
