Hello,
While I've been working on the HATHAWAY wills, etc., several people have
asked me about my HATHAWAY line. Below is my (brief) line. I am not sure
about those who didn't leave England. I have names, but haven't yet worked
on these people. I also remember that there is a question about the SHERMAN
name. I haven't yet worked on that yet either, so I'll just type it as I
have it right now. My work as been more involved with my HATHAWAYs of
Freetown, MA, and the history rather than just getting each date, etc.,
perfectly. Yes, that is important, but my angle is that I love history, and
like to see and imagine what my ancestors lived and did. Thus, my every word
may not be perfect. Please feel free to add info to my line (siblings
spouses, dates, etc.)!
Next week I'll start with the Wills, etc., for Jacob's son, Joseph HATHAWAY
(who m. Alice STRANGE).

Hello,
This is the last item from the Will of Jacob HATHAWAY of Freetown (d. 1759).
This is the Division of his Real Estate (1759-1760). After all of the work I
did on this Will, my work has finally led to success!!! For the first time,
some landmarks in this Division are places I know of! Indeed, my HATHAWAYS
were in Assonet (Freetown), the NW section near the Assonet River and Assonet
Bay. I found another old map (1871) in the basement of the Taunton
Courthouse, including names of lots as of 1871. One map was of Freetown, and
one smaller section of Assonet. There was the Hathaway Estate, many Hathaway
homes, etc., Hathaway Wharf, etc. Yes, there other HATHAWAYs outside of that
section, but one can tell that that was the beginning of their land. Many of
the surnames mentioned in his Will, etc., are also on those two maps. I'll
try to post it on line after scanning my photocopy.

Hello Joe,
My Willis CHASE was born about 1813. Most census records state that he was born in New York State. I have never seen the name of Samuel connected with my Willis but I thought it might be a match. I have been looking for years for this ancestor and have collected all kinds of CHASE information but I'm just plain stuck.
Here is what I do know:
I have first found Willis in the town of Wheatland, Orleans Co. NY with his wife, Sophia H.(Polly and Hopy also used as nicknames)(H. may stand for Hoag) and some children in the 1840 census.
1846 the family moves to Hamburg, Erie Co. NY
In 1850 and 1860 Willis and family are found in West Seneca, Erie Co. NY census
In 1861 Willis has died. No will, no grave, not buried with his wife. I have checked Civil War records and find no indication that he fought in the war.
Children: William, Franklin, Susan, Sarah Frances, Henry, Wallace U., Elizabeth
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Marilyn,
My Willis S. Chase was born in Craftsbury, Orleans Co, VT on 13 Jun 1837. So I don't see a match there. I have the "Seven Generations ...of Aquila & Thomas Chase" book, if you have any other clues, about your Samuel Willis Chase or Sophia H., I will do some cross-referencing. (Brothers, sisters, parents, where they lived, maiden names, all could be clues).

Hello,
In 1999 you offered more information on Samuel Willis Chase, son of John and Sally (Hoyt) Chase. My 2nd gr. grandfather was Willis Chase born about 1813, married Sophia H. and died in 1861. Could he possibly be one and the same as Samuel Willis b. in Craftsbury, VT?
Could you send birthdate of Samuel Willis Chase? Thanks, Marilyn Jewett Tracey
Hi Judy,
Thanks for the verification of the marriage date for Job and Patience. I
wanted to mention that I noticed we are related not only through William
Chase, but also through Rebecca Chace who married Burgess Thomas Chace. I
saw Rebecca in your line of Chaces that you sent me some time ago.

Judy,
Thanks for the records. I have September 6th and you have November 6th,
1718, for the marriage of Job and Patience. Which is correct? I really do
not know and leave it to you to document.
Cheers,

Hello,
Today I tried to learn more about the 26 Freemens' Purchase in Freetown/Fall
River, MA.
I first visited the town hall in Freetown, where I was able to get a copy of
a small map showing the 26 Freemens' Purchase, as well as other purchases
near Freetown. Beside that map was a list of each lot, and which person drew
which lot. Most lots met either to the Bay (Mt. Hope Bay), the Taunton River
or the Assonet River (one "river," but name changes when it gets smaller and
moved northward).
What I didn't have was a map which would show which Lot sat where within
that Purchase.
I next went to the Registry of Deeds in Taunton (Bristol, MA). They said
that many of the deeds from the southern part of Bristol County were located
in the Registry (of Deeds) in Fall River. I was about to leave, when someone
said that perhaps there are a few "old" maps downstairs in a metal table
under the "telephone." I went downstairs, where, low and behold, I found the
Plan Book Miscellaneous, Bristol County, North District, Registry of Deeds.
On pp. 33-34, it shows all of the purchases from early Freetown, Fall River,
and other places.
When I looked at the 26 Freemens' Purchase, it showed that the lots are all
parallel, each lot moving West to East (apx.), or from the water and moving
eastward away from the water, until the end of the east boundary of the
Purchase.
I could see that lots #1 to one-half of lot #14 later became Fall River. The
northern part of lot #14 through 26 became Freetown. I also noted that North
Watuppa Pond crosses over lots 1 to 10 (that was helpful to me for a
landmark). I also noted that Mill Brook goes through lots #18 and #19, which
were part of Jacob HATHAWAY's land.
West of the (coast) land is Assonet River to the north, the Taunton River
further south, and Mt. Hope Bay still further south. South of that, the Bay
gets smaller again, and the Sakonnet River is there, which touches Portsmouth
(RI).
When looking at lots #18 & #19, the land after the River (West) is Berkley.
Further south the land after the River is Somerset.
The old map I found in the Taunton Reg. Of Deeds was a very large map - about
2 yards by 1 yard, at least. When you look at each lot (moving south to
north, from Fall River (now) to Freetown, only lots 1 to 20 are on that map.
Just above that (above lots 9 through 13) there are further, smaller lots,
numbered lots 20 - 30. That top part is called "Second Division, Copecut
Cedar Swamp." I believe this may be the last lots of the 26 Freemens'
Purchase, as I do know that in Jacob HATHAWAY's will, the lots he mentions
about lot #22 and #23 mention the Copecut Cedar Swamp.
I also copied a few pages in the Bristol County History book, which mentions
a bit about each (first) 26 owner. Perhaps most have already seen that.
>From South (Fall River) to North (Freetown), the first Lots were as follows:
1. Timothy FOSTER
2. Humphrey TURNER
3. Christopher WADSWORTH
4. Edmund CHANDLER
5. Saml. HOUSE
6. Henry HOWLAND
7. Geo. WATSON
8. Ralph PARTRIDGE
9. Timothy HATHERTY
10. Love BREWSTER
11. Richard MORSE
12. Walter HATCH
13. Thos. SOUTHWORTH
14. Wm. PAYBODIE [Peabody]
15. Josiah WINSLOW
16. John WATERMAN
17. Saml. JACKSON
18. Nathnl. MORTON*
19. Constant SOUTHWORTH*
20. Thos. BOWRNE*[Bourne]
21. Saml. NASH*
22. John BARNS [Barnes]*
23. John TISDALE*
24. Kenelm WINSLOW
25. James CUDWORTH
26. John DAMON
* = Jacob HATHAWAY's land mentioned in his Will (1759).
Thus, one can see that Lot #14, owned by William PAYBODIE, contains the line
between Fall River and Freetown. To the right (south) the lots became
(later) part of Fall River. To the left (north) the lots continued to be
part of "Freetown."
I also have the deed itself, both from the History of Bristol and the actual
deed from the town hall in Freetown. Perhaps many have already seen this. I
someone would like me to type this up, or to have me type up the small
paragraph about each "first owners," I'll be glad to do so.
I also drove around for a bit in Freetown, near Assonet. I now know that
most of my HATHAWAY land was in Freetown. I got off of Rte. 79 (largely
country road) and found the NARROWS. I think there were many places called
"the Narrows." This one was right in Freetown. There was a small river, and
what looks like an old dam. And some small waterfalls on the river. One of
the buildings has a river UNDER it, and may have been a grist mill or a saw
mill. When I followed Narrows Road, it came to some beautiful homes
(mega-homes), and you could see that the Narrows got larger and you could see
land on the other side (prob. Berkley). I tried to visit Profile Rock, but
the kids who were walking told me I'd better back up before they lock me in
for the night. I'll have to find the Rock tomorrow.
I think I know just a bit more about Freetown now. It is a bit confusing, as
I can leave my home in Middleboro in a completely different direction (Rte.
18), and come to Freetown in a very different place.
Perhaps the "Museum" (does anyone know the name of the Museum in Freetown?)
will be a good place to visit.
That's all for now.
Betty G., Middleboro
Descendant of Jacob HATHAWAY of Freetown, who died in 1759.
Hi,Dann,
That is good. Can you tell me when you will be able to publish the figures to the CHASE group?
The "Make a Wish" Foundation in the UK have an arrangement whereby a specific Canadian Branch can
transfer North American funds cheaply to the UK but I would need to know the amount involved
By copy of this I would ask the Chase group to decide whether US or Canada receive the other half bearing in mind that most purchasers were probably form the US but that Dann has done an awful lot of work on the project and is Canadian,

Well, according to the Vital Records of Swansea, Massachusetts to 1850 - as
transcribed by H.L. Peter Rounds and published by NEHGS, Boston, 1992, page
181, "JOB CHASE and PATIENCE BOWRN was married Novembr ye 5th 1718" not
November 6th or September 6th, but November 5th!

Hello,
After typing up the will of Jacob HATHAWAY (d. 1759), I thought I'd try to
find some of the landmarks in his will. I live close by. After spending
quite a bit of time with maps and google, etc., I cannot figure out where ANY
of these places are. They may be in Freetown, Fall River (split after his
will), Assonet, East Freetown, etc. Since his will was divided by many
children, the land may not be all together.
If anyone recognizes any of these landmarks, will you please let me know?
Thanks!

Regardless of the authoritative nature of Dr. Emmison's books of Essex
Wills, William and Mary seemed to have escaped his glance. Non-conformists
they may have been.
I have spent a paucity of effort here in Holland to determine if they (as
has been suggested) married in the Netherlands before their journey to parts
unknown (MBC). Could be, but in my opinion thus far, unlikely.
Either William and Mary came from Wivenhoe or they did not. I tend to
believe that they will be found in Essex with most of their compatriots.
That map of Essex I bought comes in handy when comparing the records -
Wivenhoe, Ardleigh, Boxted, and Great Bentley are still not far from each
other.
