Is anyone aware of a marriage PRIOR to 1827 for Peter Chase (son of Abel And Lydia Aldrich Chase and brother to Bela Chase of Alpine Township, MI)?
A Civil War era newspaper clipping in the Bible of g-g-grandmother Lydia O. CHASE Chambers (wife of Elihu T. Chambers, Alpine Township) is my only clue to her parentage. On the clipping Lydia had written "My brother." The clipping 'had report' of the death of a Thomas C. Chase who served in the Michigan 26th Infantry Company B as reported by a cousin, Alan Durfee of Iosco. (The demise part proved false - he was mustered out alive). A response from an earlier posting gave me the information that the cousin of Thomas mentioned in the clipping, Alan Durfee, was the son of Pamelia CHASE Durfee, daughter of Abel Chase & Lydia Aldrich (in 7 Generations of Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase). I learned that the wife of this Thomas C. Chase was named "Louise" (collected his Civil War pension and appears with him in Michigan census) and found that they are both buried in Elsie Village Cemetery. This gave me his death date. Thomas C. Chase (of Co. B., 26th Michigan Infantry) ha!
s the same approximate birth year and the EXACT death day, month and year as Thomas Chockley Chase, son of Peter Chase (brother of Pamelia & Bela) and Elizabeth Cramer Crainer, married in 1827. However, for Thomas Chockley Chase, son of Peter, to be Lydia's brother, he could only be a STEP-brother as Lydia was born in 1820 and Peter and Elizabeth (parents of Thomas) were married 7 years after Lydia's birth. Is anyone aware of an earlier marriage for Peter?
Some time back I received a note from the list about the Chase Chronicles
treatment of this chap... a ggg grandson would have been MERRILL Chase..
I have a Merrill Chase born in New Brunswick, Canada, and in 1881 living in
Ontario, with what could be his son Walter Legrange Chase ....
Merrill is 47 and "widowed", and born in New Brunswick.
Now has anyone identified Merrill Chase, somewhere else ? Is there any
information to show Elijah Pitts Chase's great-grandson could have made it to
Canada in the 1800's....????

Charlie,
Is it correct that for the purpose of the DNA test that this will only
apply to males descended via the male lie. i.e their names would be Chase.
If this is the case could Mr Blankfeld explain if it is possible for some
one like myself to Chase descendancy when my Chase line is from my great
great grandmother Sarah Chase.
Is it best that all these questions be addressed via yourself or direct to
Mr. Blankfeld and copied to the Group?

Keith, you are correct. The test we are talking about tests the Y-DNA which
is used in testing DNA for a certain surname--like Chase. Therefore, a
surname test needs to be conducted by testing males, since the surname is
carried from father to son, and so is the Y-DNA.
As you know, females do not carry the Y-DNA, which is the male chromosome.
They just carry their mother's chromosome, or mtDNA, which in its turn was
received from their mother.... and so on, always from the maternal line. They
can do a test for the mtDNA but that would not prove anything as far as the
Chase surname goes. Now, if you know a living direct male descendant of a
brother of your GGGrandmother he could be included for your Chase line.
Now, you and I could be tested: You from a maternal Chase and me as an in-law
just to see the difference but our results should be more meaningful if used
on a Hume or Scott Family test.
Keith, on the second part of your question: Mr. Blankfeld said he would be
glad to answer questions from any member of our group. So, if you or anyone
else has a question that needs to be answered by an expert feel free to
contact him. If he changes his mind and only wants one spokesperson he will
let me know.

send him several checks from the group with the test takers paying the

Our monies would apply only towards tests taken from volunteers referred by
this group. Others who are tested later would pay the full price. Charlie

Here is the reply from Mr. Blankfeld:
Dear Charlie,
Thank for your prompt reply.
Family Tree DNA always recommends that groups start with the 12 marker test.
This is a test that will cost less per person, but is capable of telling if 2
people are unrelated. Then, you only refine to 25 markers those that had a
12/12 match. Since the difference between taking the 25-marker test right
away, and upgrading to 25 markers later is $20 ($169 as opposed to $99+$90),
the group will most probably be saving money as a whole. This has been our
experience with other groups.
If cost is no concern, then 25-marker is a higher resolution test, tighter in
its matching results and confirming the possibility of a common ancestor more
recently than a 12-marker would do. A 12-marker test tells us that 50% of the
times the two persons who match had a common ancestor within 14.4
generations. The 25-marker makes this number go down to about 7 generations.
Also, while a mismatch in the 12-marker guarantees the testees being
unrelated, there is a possibility of a 12/12 match that not necessarily tells
that 2 people are related: the Western Atlantic Modal Haplotype, is found in
about 0.5% of the people with European ancestry. In this case, a 25 marker
test would be necessary to tell if these 2 people that matched 12/12 are
indeed related. I hope I was not confusing in this explanation, but if I was,
I'll be happy to talk to anyone that has questions about it.
There's no problem in sending several checks as long as the checks have a
reference as to which kit #s they are helping to paying for. Or, if you want
to keep an account with no designation, and those moneys will be paying for
tests as they come in, we can also handle it.
We don't need to start a group only when you have several people ready to do
the test. Actually, I would recommend that we establish the Chase DNA Project
as soon as the group has decided that it wants to go ahead with this project.
This way, I can issue the code and a link that will allow members of your
group to automatically join the project at the group rates. This would take
me only 2 minutes, and as I said, there is no cost related to it.
Please let me know if you or anyone in the group have any more questions and
how would you like to proceed.

Hello All,
I have added a link to my Chase Image file in the Michigan section for
Chase families that were listed in one or more Fulton County, New York
Censuses for the years 1845, 1850, 1870 and 1880. I have the information
for the 1855 New York Census that I will be adding soon. There are many
persons in the Image Files that have not taken their CHASE research back
to their English roots. Does anyone connect to any of these families?
Some of these families were in one census and not in the next one.

Charlie,
Certainly sounds like something my boys would be willing to do for us. I
also forgot to mention that I will contribute reasonable funds in support of
the project.
Sandy
Sandy, thanks for volunteering to ask one of your kin for the test. I am
adding your name to our volunteer list. I have sent a e-mail to Family Tree
asking for information that will be posted to the site.
What I understand is they send a kit that includes a brush that is swiped
inside the mouth for a DNA sample. The brush is then sent to the lab for
testing. This is a painless test and the results are not used for any other
purpose other than for our DNA project.

Hello Cousins,
I've been reading about the new project with interest so it's about time I
chimed in. My Aquila line is securely documented and I have four living male
relatives whom I can ask to participate, my uncle, my brother and his two
sons.
Before I talk with them, however, can somebody find out what the testing
protocol is? I understand they'll be sent a kit, but then what?
Thanks, Sandy Chase

We have been discussing a DNA project within the CHASE-L group and we are
interested in learning more about setting up the project.
I will tell you a little about our group: We have about 300 members. Several
of these are female and many of the males do not have the Chase surname. Many
of these are believed to have descended from three Chase men who came to
America, from England, in the early and mid 1600s. We have not been able to
connect these three men to a common ancestor. Other lines are picked up at a
later date and may or may not be connected to the three Chase men mentioned
above.
Many of our group have reviewed some of the other family DNA projects, listed
on the Internet, so we have a basic understanding. I know our group would be
pleased, however, to learn more about your company and learn some of the
things we need to keep our project moving in the right direction.
One specific question I have is: Based on the above information, what would
you consider a minimum number of people we should have before we consider
doing the DNA testing? Information sent by you will be forwarded to the
CHASE-L group.

If it is OK with the CHASE-L group I will write a follow up to Keith's e-mail
to the gentleman from the Family Tree DNA group. I will report back to the
group on what I find out.
To date we have 13 people who have responded willing to help financially with
the Chase DNA project and three volunteers for DNA testing. Out of those
three only one has a line believed to be back to one of the three major
lines.

ALL,
I have been in contact with the owner of the Surnameweb facility regarding an effective search engine and other
matters.
He has offered me a similar site at genealogy surnames with built in search engine. The url will be
http://chase.genealogysurnames.com/
PLEASE NOTE!! This site will not be open until sometime in the New Year
I have advised him to review our Chase/Chace site as it is now large and growing and I am likely to want in excess of 100 Mbs if possible. I know he is keen to get me to convert to compressed image files and that is likely to be a big job in itself.
I will welcome constructive ideas as to the layout of the new site. I know the current one looks old fashioned to some but I am not keen on Frames as this inhibits the size of the print and my eyes are not so good as many but the opening page certainly could do with some work
This will allow me to convert the database into a different format but it will allow for the removal of all birth dates of living persons.
and also allow for updating.
