Elias Wilson married Mary Ann Chase 24 Dec 1856. I apologize for the error.
That was probably because I couldn't sleep and thought I could do research
in the middle of the night! Evelyn

Any cousins from this line out there? Evelyn
Hi-
I've just recently subscribed to this list in the hope I may get some leads
to my Chase family. This line is my grandmother on my father's side and I
have a Charles W. Chase b. 1843 and a Margaret A. Chase b. 1850 who married
in 1866. They were both apparently born in Essex County or Kent County,
Ontario.
I did find the family of Margaret A. Chase in Tilbury West in the 1861
Census so I know her family back to Acquilla and Ann -
Thomas R. Chase (b. 1819 at London, ON -d. 1855 Mersea Township, Essex
County, ON)(son of Mark Chase b. NH and Ann Thomas) and Eleanor Burns
(1829-1888)
Their Children -
Collin Chase b. 1847
**Margaret A. Chase b. 1850
William 1854
George E. b. 1855
Mark Thomas b. 1859 ?
Mary Jane b. 1859 ?
Charles b. 1861
Jonathan b. 1863
Elizabeth b. 1865 ?
Willis b. Sept. 1865
I have seen some of this family in the Mersea Township area in later Census
years.
Margaret A. Chase b. 1850 married Charles W. Chase b. 1843 in 1866.
(I suspect it was in Wayne County, Michigan but I have to check the actual
marriage register before being sure)
Charles W. Chase info from his death notice -
"Deceased was born near Wheatley, and in his younger days followed sailing
in the summer months, and lumbering in the winter. In 1862 he enlisted at
Monroe, in a Michigan Cavalry, and served in the America Civil War for
three years, being in the Union Army. At the close of the war, he returned
to Essex County, and in 1866 was married to Miss Margaret Chase, of Union,
who survives him. He came to Essex shortly after, and has resided in this
section ever since, being engineer in the first saw mill in the town, also
superintendent of the waterworks system for some years, and engineer at the
Canning factory for the past thirteen years. Mr. Chase was a member of the
town council for ten years, and Mayor of the town in 1915."
I did find his enlistment papers stating he was born in Canada West and
was a Sailor. He was immediately made a corporal for some reason. Dated
December 1862.
Monguagon, Michigan
USA Civil War, 7th Cavalry, Co. C and Co. D.
They then say he deserted I think in July 1863 which would place the
company in Ohio at the point. The index stated he deserted a few months
earlier.
At that point I can't find him any longer. His death notice states he came
back to Canada although I can't find him in the 1871 census even though his
first son William Franklin was supposed to have been born in Comber, Ontario
(Tilbury West Township, Essex County. If the marriage of a "Charles W.
Chase" and a "Margreth A. Chase" in Wayne County, MI in 1866 are my Chase's
I find it surprising that after deserting the army he would return to
Michigan and marry there with both being born in Canada.
Charles W. Chase and Margaret A. Chase had the following children -
**William Franklin b. 1869
Emma b. 1872
Ellen S. b. 1877
Charles H. 1879
Aylmer b. 1885
Jonathan Thomas
William Franklin Chase married Annie Klingbile -
their children
Pearl b. 1899
Myrtle Leatha b. 1902
Wenonah Mae b. 1905 married Harry Taylor (my grandfather)
Marion Marvel b. 1910
Ruby Mills b. 1917
I noticed there were some Chase descendants with the names Pearl and Myrtle
in Ohio I believe. Since they were names unusual in my family maybe the
connection is there?
Does anyone recognize any of these names?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I misread. The other Alvah is descended from Caleb's brother Henry,
not Eleazer. Should have double checked before hitting send.

Lonnie,
Thanks! The Dighton Vital Records book lists six (out of seven) of the same
children in Chamberlain's book. They even have the same birth dates as
children of my Caleb Chace and Rose!
Book 2, page 110
Children of Caleb Chace & Rose
Mary born April 19, 1788
Candace born December 16, 1789
Caleb born September 25, 1791
Solomon born November 11, 1793
Celia born November 15, 1795
Alves born July 2, 1797
Deaths, Book 4, page 48 listed "Alvah Chace died Dec. 2, 1881, born July 2,
1797 to Caleb Chace & Rose, married to Clarisa (Jones)." Which confirms
that Caleb and Rose's "Alves" was really my Alvah.
Looks like a definite match. From the different spelling of Chase from this
point forward, it looks like my Alvah Chace (1797-1881) or his father Caleb
were the ones who changed the spelling from Chase to Chace!
Interesting to note that another Alvah Chase (b. 1805) who kept appearing in
my searches IS related, through Caleb's brother Eleazer.
Thanks for your help!
Happy Hunting!

Judy,
After some lookups in the Vital Records of Dighton, Bristol, MA by a
wonderful soul on the MABRISTOL Census-Lookup list, I have confirmed that my
Alvah Chace was born 2 Jul 1797 and was the son of Caleb Chace and Rose.
Once I confirm Rose is Rosamund Bullock, I think you can put me down as a
definite William descendant.
Thanks to all for their help!
Happy Hunting!

Jan, Your Alva may be of this line:
There is an Alva, b. 2 July 1797 who is the son of Caleb Chase and Rosamund
Bullock. That Caleb was in turn son of Caleb Chase and Mary Manchester. He
was of Swansea. Caleb was the son of Phillip of Swansea and Hannah Buffum
(who was dau of Caleb and Mary (Gaskill) Buffum. And Phillip was the son of
Samuel of Portsmouth RI and Swansea MA and his wife Sarah Sherman, dau. of
Samuel and Martha (Tripp) Sherman. Samuel, in turn was the son of William
and his second wife who was in turn son of William (The Immigrant) Chase.
This Alva could be yours as he is of the Buffum family who went to RI and
were well known Quakers.
Hope this is of some help.

Mother: Jennie Chase
Son: Charles Chase
Here is what we know. This Chase family lived in Clearfield County, PA in
the late 1800's. Charlie Chase was found guilty of Murder, escaped, was
captured in Jefferson County, and his body was returned to his parents. They
buried him up on the hill behind their house. So far we have been unable to
locate the family on the census (considering the 1890 was destroyed we can
only rely on the 1880). We have been unable to locate the graves of any of
the three. Recently, during a funeral in the area, we were able to ascertain
that the family was African American, perhaps ex slaves. There is one more
piece of the puzzle. A local doctor in the area about 1892 or later was seen
removing the flesh from the bones of a large black man. He wanted to use
them for a display for his office. I know that this is offensive to some and
I apologize for my indiscretion but I am trying to solve this mystery. Did
the doctor obtain the body of Charlie Chase from his grave? That area of the
country at that time was relatively free of African Americans and the doctor
lived just a mile down the road from the Post Place.
You might wonder what my interest is. I love history. I found out about
this family through the family archives. Specifically a family letter. The
Chase family lived down the road from mine on what was called the Post Place.
I am curious as to what happened to the family. If you know anything please
write back. I would like to share this adventure with you.
Sincerely,
Renee L. Waring
