Hi,
This isn't my line but the three names fit with both my mom and dad ---my
dad being Ullyssis Grant and my mother's last name Chase. Interesting.
I am sending this because I believe it's time to do as other LAST NAME GROUPS
DO. Whoever is holding the list names should periodically send along the
E-Mail addresses of the 300 + members of this group. Better yet, though in
many cases you can get the connection on the CD which many of you will be
getting, it would be nice to print the name and which Chase we connect with
if we know.
(I'll start) VReeder(a)aol.com---I am Ginger Reeder C.---Connection-- William
of Cape Cod
Now list owner please send along the list. If anyone objects they can send a
message to the list owner privately if the list owner will give out the
address.
Thanks
Ginger
Hi,Paul,
I am puzzled. I have announced a few times recently on the CHASE-L Group that Dann Craig(Canada) and
Dick Chase (USA) will be handling this and an announcement will be
made when all is set up,which will be shortly.
I am puzzled because you obviously know about the CDROM but are you
a subscriber to CHASE-L(a)rootsweb.com ?
For you are not alone I get about 4 a day similar requests.
It could be that some messages are not getting through,

Not a bit! My suggestion, since you asked, would be St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital, which treats terminally ill children from all over the
world, and does not charge beyond the family's ability to pay. They have had
some huge successes in the treatment of various children's cancers.
Hi,
Seems to be a lot of activity in Vermont these days. I am trying to locate a
GG grandfather, John Chase, who was born in Vermont. Don't know where.
Year- late 1700's. He had a son ,( only one I know of ) born in NY. in 1815.
All help will be GREATLY appreciated.

I agree with you on this Keith. As for suggesting a charity, two of my personal favorites are the Make a Wish Foundation, and UNICEF. Please add them to your list of charities to consider. Thanks.

ALL,
Over the last few days I have received many messages about the CDROM.
They vary from suggestions as to what to do with any surplus monies to
kindly volunteering to help co-ordinate collect the money etc.
As the producer of the CD I made the decision that Dann Craig and Dick
Chase ,(having volunteered to do so), should copy and distribute the
CDROM.
Copies will only be sent on receipt of payment made to them.
Their is absolutely no way I will agree to the suggestion that any surplus
monies be used other than for an agreed Children's Charity.
I believe that having spent,no devoted, 14 months to this task that I have
every right to make this decision.
Now as to which childre's charity the money should go here I would
welcome suggestions from the Group but I would ask, that while taking full
consideration of the choices of the Group, I be allowed to make the final
decision.
If this sounds in any way arrogant, so be it,

Allow my indulgence in posting portions of my sister's note.
For you non-Vermonters: Shelburne Museum is in Burlington, Vermont, the
largest city in the state.
Hello Harriet,
Here are a couple of tidbits of information which you might like to
know.
This week I applied for a part-time job with the City of Burlington.
One
question asked on the application form was: 'Do you have any relatives who
have worked or are working for the City of Burlington?' I answered, " Yes,
an ancestor of mine was mayor of this city for 7 years during the late
1800s.
His name was Joseph Hatch." Now I'll find out if they read the applications
when I have an interview. The job is administering the domestic violence
grant. It is 19 hours/week, a temporary position with the police dept.
My other piece of news is far more interesting, I think. Today, at the
Shelburne Museum, I was working in the carriage and sleigh barn because the
Settlers cabin was being whitewashed. You'll never guess what I found
there
On display is a cutter (a kind of sleigh) donated to the museum by Mr. &
Mrs.
Roger Conant. "So what?", you might ask. The owner of the museum piece
was:
Are you ready???? The answer is........THE HONORABLE DUDLEY
CHASE!!!!!
This is what the information tells us on the placard:
"According to a family tradition, this sleigh was originally purchased
by
Judge Chase. Dudley Chase was born in Cornish, NH in 1771 and was a member
of the Legislature, Speaker of the House, and US Senator. He was Chief
Justice of the VT Supreme Court and retired in 1831 to devote himself to
farming. The sleigh was stored for many years in Northfield and later in
Burlington whence it came to the museum."
I think we were related to the Conants much in the same way we were
supposed to have been related to the Blaisdels.
The placard goes on to tell about the decal and decorations on the sleigh.
There is a decal that looks a little like a man in a pulpit, a reminder of
Philander perhaps?...... When I have time I will copy everything in the
information book about the sleigh and send it to you. The museum is also
updating the placards. That could be different with more information or it
might stay the same but have a fresher look, etc. All of the cutters,
sleighs, carriages, etc., are being updated that way.
........ I did read in the book when I had a minute that Dudley retired
in 1831
"to devote himself to farming." He was in the VT Supreme Court from
1813-1817.

All,
I support Keith in his desire to have proceeds from the sale of CDs to go to
a children's charity, while not negating Ginger's suggestion to hire a
professional researcher in England to further pursue our English heritage.
Keith has done the work, and his direction for the surplus, if any, should be
honored. In addition, if we decide we would like to hire a fully qualified
and experienced researcher in the areas as suggested by Keith, I for one
would be willing to make a contribution to that cause.
I support our moving forward in both directions.

Hi,Roy,
Thank you for your comments.
It may seem like 2 years but actually it is a little short of 14 months.
I am getting great support from Dann Craig and Dick Chase.
This is just as well for I have spent the last 2 weeks struggling with a
"sick" somputer , made ill by my Cd-writer!!
If I dis-connect it I can start the computer. I then staret again and last
night made one copy of a CHASE (revision3) Cdrom, tried to make another
and the PC locked up.
When I tried to reboot I had to use my "rescue" disk to get going and
finally at about 1.00 am got the PC working only to find that it would have
nothing to do with my Cd-writer!
If you can imagine the frustration, after 14 months, and then cannot get
my Cd maker working properly.
However those 2 stalwarts I mentioned above are working hard verifying
links and making corrections.
Perhaps they could send a progress report direct to the list.
It really is VERY,VERY,Close to production but with some 500(estimated)
links there is a lot of work checking.
I hope no one thinks this is just another excuse. I an d my aides have
been working VERY hard over the last few days,
I should add that the one Complete copy I have I am retaining.
I believe that produced by Dann/Dick will be the "business"

Just to add my two cents worth--
Keith (and helpers) did sacrifice a lot of personal time and effort to this
project over the last two years. I don't write the list very often, namely
because I have been stuck forever on my Chase line and am waiting for
the 1930 Census to come out next year so that I can find my Grandfather,
BUT, I read all the postings to the list and I was thrilled when Keith
decided to take on this proj
ect of his own accord and my personal thought is he should make a little money on this to repay him
for all the trouble. I know that's not what he wants nor was it ever his intention to do so, just
my opinion. If anyone has ever done work with computers or programming, and especially in genealog
y, they are works in progress. We should all know that by now, just like any software program, cha
nges, corrections, adjustments will always be necessary. From Keith's mail it sounds like he's fed
up w
iously waiting) the nay-sayers will find something else to complain about. I personally look forwa
rd to browsing the CD, finding my own information (I hope it made it on the CD) and reading more ab
out all of my Chase cousins throughout the world. Keith-- I hope in the future, you'll be back to
the Chase List and receive the many thank you's you deserve.
Sincerely,
Roy Chase

Subject: [CHASE-L] My Off-Topic Comment regarding the CD Project
Dear List members, I just got home from my honeymoon so I'm not really
up to date on what's happening. I do know from the tone of Keith's last
email that's he's upset with someone's comment. I agree with Keith in
that all should reserve judgment. The CD Keith put together was done on
his own time and out of the kindness of his own heart. NO ONE asked him
to do it, we did as a list helped him decide what to put on the CD.
Keith is not asking you to purchase the CD as a money gain, but as a
tool for your research. If you decide that the CD has errors I'm sure
that Keith would like to know of them, but please remember that in
Genealogy we do find mistakes nothing is perfect.
Also if any of you know of an easier way of doing the CD then just maybe
you would be interested in doing Version 2. But do remember that you
can't please everyone.
Keith Thank You very much for all your hard work (those of us long
termers know the struggle you went though.).

It is my understanding that the CD's are to be sold at the cost of
production plus an additional amount to be given to a charity. I
think Keith's request for the additional sum to go to a children's
charity is an excellent one and should be honored.

Good Evening,
I would be happy to lend financial support to hire a genealogist to search
out Aquila and Williams parentages. Also, I think I could afford the token
amounts that Sandy is talking about as a charity donation in honor of Keith's
work.
And I would be happy to share a DNA study in Salt Lake City (or wherever that
project is being done) to try to determine if I come out of the William (as I
suspect) or Aquila line or neither. I feel secure enough to handle any
illegitimacies or questions of that nature that may pop up as a result of a
DNA study. But I need solid Acquila and William descendants to provide the
comparative source.

Dear All,
A suggestion to throw out to so many Chaces/ses. It is something for you to
ponder seriously as I believe this may be our one time to accomplish
something important to all of us who connect with the Chase name:
Why not take the proceeds made from the CD and hire a very good genealogist
in London to research our Chase heritage. Many of us have spent hours and
hours in the Buckinghamshire or Essex Record Office in England and we've come
up with information which we have happily shared with you all, but we have
not gotten further in our research. There's lots of searching to do over
there, but to my knowledge none of us has gotten past 1630 when William came
over with his wife Mary. I know Michael Wood is a genuine genealogist who
works out of the London genealogy society but there may be others there who
are better. I know about him because he is a descendant of the Shermans (the
William Chase line) in Dedham, Essex. He knows every inch of that area in
Essex which is very close to Wivenhoe.
Anyway folks, I guess we all will wonder about William and REALLY WHO HIS
ANCESTORS WERE.
With Aquila and aThomas====We still haven't proven anything earlier than when
they RENTED the manor house in Bucks. County. We need research there.
Think about it all of you. Are we really satisfied with this information
about our Chase families? Don't we want to search earlier? I still have
many loose ends I picked up when I lived over there and tripped down by train
to the Record Offices there, but I think I'd be lots better off going with
research done by someone who really has the background for English research
even though I've been at this game for many years.
Please all of you---think seriously about this. Wouldn't
't it be fun to find out some more early information on our Chase name?
There's lots more information to find about them through research on spouse
names for example. We have NEVER PROVEN MARY'S LAST NAME for one. Then
they've disproved the connection with the Townley name. Lots of questions
questions.
Ginger in AZ
Dear Cousins -
There have been a bunch of queries about this, so I hope this message helps
everybody to catch up. I've cut and pasted below a portion of the message
which Keith sent to the List several weeks ago. I understand this to mean
that Dick Chase (US) and Dann Craig (Canada) have the responsibility for
checking on reproduction prices, postage, etc., and when they are ready they
will post to the List what they have learned and what we should expect to pay.
KEITH WROTE:
"I have sent off 2 master copies of the cdrom to Richard Chase (U.S.) and
Dann Craig,(Canada). They will announce to the Group instructions as to
purchase."
Thus, the game plan; we simply have to wait to hear from Dick and Dann.
Meanwhile, a number of suggestions have been made about compensating Keith.
It seems to me that he is quite clear about no personal gain for his time and
effort. He has said, however, that it would please him if a donation to a
child advocacy charity could be built into the purchase price for our CD. In
this regard, I'd like to suggest that a modest amount ($5.00, or...?) be
included in the purchase price.
Just for starters, if you plan to purchase a CD and have an interest in
participating in such a donation, please let me know off-List while we are
waiting for a price. I volunteer to coordinate this particular aspect in
terms of identifying organizations to consider (Keith having first
choice/refusal), acting as fiduciary for receiving and forwarding of funds
and securing receipts for all participants.
(OH, golly darn, I just thought of this.) Please let me not be responsible
for our losing yet another subscriber to the List because of our "internal
politics." (By the way, Lonnie, BRAVO.)
Best to all, Sandra Chase

Researchville Newspaper Searches
Researchville is a collection of more than 650 searchable databases on the
Internet. The site, located at http://www.researchville.com, has recently
added over 400 daily newspapers' archives to its research site. The archives
vary in size and age, with most being only 2-4 weeks old. However, this
should be a boon to researchers seeking online copies of obituaries and
other news stories. The Researchville site normally uses a fill-in-the-blank
format to query multiple search engines at once, but the newspaper links are
a little different. You select a state from the pull-down menu and a list of
newspapers in that state will be presented. Enter a word or name or phrase
in the query box and click OK. The page will be refreshed with newspapers in
which matches in their archives were found. Click on the newspaper and your
query will then be executed.
