Hello all!
I hope you get this email as I am not sure I am reaching the list ...
There is a HOAX VIRUS ALERT floating around that pertains to a file named SULFNBK.EXE. The warning tells you to search for the file and delete it.
This file actually is a Windows utility that handles the old DOS file naming convention that limited file names to only 8 characters.
DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE as it will cause your computer to stop recognizing any files longer than 8 characters.

Well, I grew up in Randolph Center and the name Byam certainly rings a bell.
There were a lot of Chase about, but none that we were related to.
Seth Chase was one of the early (first) settlers of Randolph.
"Your" Caleb it would seem is the second Caleb of Seth the second, the first
lost in the woods at age six.
In the "Seven Generations of Aquila and Thomas Chase" if you don't have this
"bible" try to get hold of it.
#1077
Seth Chase (Seth > Seth > Moses > Moses> Ens. Moses), born 10 Mar 1779;
married 28 Nov., 1805, Lucy Byam, born 25 May 1783 , died 28 Nov 1866. Caleb
died in Braintree, VT, 2 Sept 1862. They lived in Braintree.
Children
Lucy b. 19 Aug 1806; m. Abel Byam
Olive, b. 11 Aug 1808; m. (1) Joel Richardson; m. (2) Reuben Wakefield (I
remember that as a Randolph - Braintree name)
Esther B., b. 7 Dec 1810 m. (1) Edmund Kinney; m. (2) Samuel Mann
Betsy, b. 7 Jan 1812; m. 28 Feb 1839, William L. Harwood
James M., b. 7 Feb 1815; d. 7 July 1842
It goes on a bit. Looks like most of your vital records "should" be in
Randolph or Braintree, Vermont.
Far as I can tell, I am not related to the "Harriet M." you mention.

Many Chases. Surnames easy to find as they are highlighted; many from whence
and whiter they goeth.
Still looking for evidence of my ggrandpa, Ezra Chase, born 1846, supposedly

Vermont, so am following further on until he shows up with my grandfather,

Hello
I'm hoping that someone may be able to tell me more about Daniel Chase's
first wife, Mary CARPENTER?
Daniel CHASE, born Newbury, MA Oct, 15, 1702, son of Daniel and ___
KIMBALL, (Daniel born 1661 is son of Aquilla nd anne Wheeler) This Daniel
(Jr) died in Concord, NH about 1775. He md in Newbury Jan 22, 1722/23 Mary
CARPENTER and had two children by her:
Mary born Mar 22, 1723 and no more is heard about her (Chase history
says 'probably died young' as there was no further info. on her, I suppose
Judah, born Nov 22, 1724. No further info here either.
Mary Carpenter died about 1725 and Daniel md 2nd, Elizabeth COLLINS of
Salisbury, probably widow of John Collins of Salisbury--this 2nd marriage
took place about Feb 12, 1725/26; 8 more children were born to Daniel and
with Eliz. Collins.
I've put together many years of research in my search for my ancestral
grandmother, Mary Chase, born abt 1723, who md first, Daniel THURSTON and
was widowed about 1747; she md 2nd, Richard Whittier. Mary was a Quaker, as
were the Whittier's and I believe, the THURSTONs.
Perhaps the reason Mary has been so illusive is that she wasn't raised
by Daniel and his 2nd wife, which would explain a lot. I just learned that
Daniel's (Jr). cousin, Stephen (who md Sarah Hale) had a daughetr Je'mima'
md Nathaniel THURSTON, brother to the above Daniel THURSTON, which would
place my Mary in the right place, right time and knowing this family.
Additionally, Daniel Chase (Jr. born 1702) and Stepehen Chase (who md Sarah
Hale) -1st cousins, both had siblings who married into the WHITTIER family.
Joseph Chase, born 1677, son of Aquilla and Esther (Bond) Chase, first
cousins to the above Daniel (born 1702) and Stephen (who md Sarah Hale)
married Abigail THURSTON, a sister to the above Nathaniel and Daniel
THURSTON. These 3 Chase individuals were born in Newbury, some of whom
went to Stratham, Rockingham Co., NH. So, 3 Chase first cousins md
THURSTON siblings and one could probably assume they knew one another.
Can anyone shed light on this Mary Carpenter who md Daniel Chase as to
who her parents were and any ancestry information? Also does anyone know
what became of Judah CHASE, Daniel's 2nd child born to Mary CARPENTER?
Lastly, would anyone know if this Daniel Chase, born 1702 to Daniel and
___ (KIMBALL) Chase were Quakers?
I'd deeply appreciate any information anyone may have on this issue.
Warm regards, Carol Ashby

Dear Groups:
I am trying to find what became of a young woman named Maud Chase. She was
born about 1874 to Ezra Carter Chase and Josephene Agnes Paxton. Her parents
were married in Utah, and Josephene died about 1884. I found a mention of a
son also dying. Ezra then moved with Maud to where three of his sisters
lived, Butte Co., CA. I am a look up volunteer here. I started researching
for Sandra Chase Miller, and became fascinated with Maud. Below is a query I
wrote about her.
I'll start with Maud's Grandfather in the 1860 Census for Butte County. He
came here during the Gold Rush.
Edward Chase 66 Maine
His Children:
Sophia Spaulding Chase Pence 32 Ohio (Husband Manoah Pence)
Catherine Chase Knox 26 Maine (husband Thomas)
1880 census:
Maria Chase Van Ness 50 Maine (Husband James)
In 1884 I find Ezra Carter Chase (her father) on a voter registration. He is
49, born in Maine.
All this to establish the relatives, and time frame Maud came to Butte County
with her father. They arrive sometime after the 1880 census, and before he
registered to vote in 1884.
They had previous lived in Stockton, Utah. I found a newspaper article that
said her mother Josephine Maud Paxton Chase, and an unnamed son, had died in
Idaho, and Ezra moved Maud to be near family.
Maud graduated from Chico Normal School in the early 1890's. At that time the
school only educated teachers. Now it is CSU Chico. She taught in Lovelock
during the 1894-1895 school year, and in Paradise the following year.
She married Austin Page Merrill, (son of Daniel Merrill, who was a Butte
County tax collector) in 1896. They were both 21. They were divorced in 1899.
She later left to be a government teacher in the Philippine Islands. She
married a Vice-consulate by the name of Love in 1901. Her father, Ezra, who
went with her, died of Cholera in 1903. He was buried there.
Her friend Clara Bennett, who also went to teach, died of Smallpox, and was
buried overseas.
There is a mention of Maud and her husband visiting family here, and then
leaving for Washington, DC. This is where we lose her trail. (1903)
I find a later record for Butte County teachers that shows her as Maud Chase
(Salt). She had dated a young man named Reginald John Salt. I am wondering if
she returned to Butte County, and married him. R. J. Salt was born in
England. He was in his mid 20's when I found him, and his brothers, in the
1900 census.
I'm hoping descendants of any of the named families can enlighten me as to
what became of Maud after 1903.
Thanks,
Donna

A note from the Chase Chronicles - July 1910
GENERAL JONATHAN CHASE
[Jonathan, Samuel, Daniel, Ensign Moses, Aquila]
"The question was put not long ago by one of our family to one of
the leading men in New Hampshire, "Who do you consider the one
strong man of the Chase family?" The reply was a surprise for the
gentleman inquired of was familiar with the history and attainments
of the Chief Justice Salmon P., of both bishops and being himself a
practical politician he knew many strong men of our line who had
distinguished themselves in state affairs.
He said in substance, there was one man who from all I can learn was
a mighty man. He did not make much noise about it but he was always
ready for an emergency. Nothing was to hard for him. He never was
beaten. He was the biggest man of the lot and yet he is one of whom
you hear less than some of the others; but look him up and you will
find that I am right.
This man was Jonathan Chase [5], born in Sutton, Mass., Dec. 6,
1732, the son of Judge Samuel Chase [4] and Mary Dudley. Married
first Thankful Sherman of Grafton, Mass. Then married Sarah Hall,
daughter of Rev. David Hall of Sutton, Mass., Gen. Chase died in
Jan. 1800 and his venerable father Judge Samuel died the same year
in Aug., aged nearly 93. When the migration from Sutton to Cornish
occurred, Jonathan went with his father's family to the new home. He
was at once recognized as a leader. His earlier life was a farmer, a
surveyor, a store keeper and a miller. When the Revolutionary War
broke out Mr. Chase gathered a company of men and was chosen Captain
and then Colonel of a regiment of N. H. Militia and upon the
requisition of Major General Gates marched with his regiment from
Cheshire Co. N. H. to reinforce the army at Ticonderoga in October
and November, 1776. This was again undertaken in May 1777 to
reinforce the northern continental army under orders from Major
General Folsom; and he was called to service in Sept. 1777 at
Saratoga.
That he served his country well is shown by the records of the state
where appears the following; Headquarters, Saratoga, Oct. 18, 1777.
This may certify that Col. Chase with a regiment of volunteers have
faithfully served until this date in the northern army and are now
discharged with honor.
By order of General Gates,
Jacob Bagley, Brig. General.
This is the story of the strong man, simple enough perhaps but there
is a lot behind it. Three times called out in emergencies. Ready
each time and prepared for quick work. Long marches over poor roads
or no roads at all. Possessing the confidence of his neighbors for
they were ready to follow. Living right among them they had respect
for his integrity, his courage, his good judgement. Familiarity is
apt to breed lack of confidence but his men responded three times.
When the emergency had passed he and his command go home and begin
their daily toil with no bluster. They did their duty. Gen. Gates
sent them home honorably discharged. The war was practically over.
Burgoyne had surrendered. Col. Chase was afterward made general of
the state militia, showing that the people of his own state were
glad to honor him.
It was this quiet dignity, this preparedness, this humility coupled
with labor and courage that makes the record of Jonathan Chase so
noble. The New Hampshire politician was correct in his judgment. He
saw the real points of greatness; to do an appointed work, and to do
it well and then to retire to the greatness of an American citizen
in his community."
[At about 70 years of age, Judge Samuel joined the regiment of his
son, Col. Jonathan Chase, and went to Saratoga and Bennington in
1777.]
