Recently I have come across the names CHASE mentioned in articles
and the newspapers.
Firstly there was the nurse from South Essex, here in England,(She has
to be from one of the William,Aquila,Thomas lines) who was found not
guilty of the unlawful killing of some children. Secondly there was a CHSE
lady who was/is a senior official in the U.S Education department and
thirdly a Clement CHASE, a geophysicist( did I spell that aright?) who did
some very important work on the rise, fall and formation of the earths land
masses and is now at Arizona University.
Apart from those biographies listed in the A.B.I and British and Library of
Congress are any of you aware of other CHASE/CHACEs prominent in the
public eye?
Oh yes and by the by, I am still working on the CDrom as i am sure
Lonnie will bear witness but am currently exhausted having spent 2 weeks
chasing my grandsons around the Alps on a combination of skis and
sledges,

A note from the Chase Chronicles - Jan. 1924
THE NEW BRIDGE AT HAVERHILL
The building of the new bridge at Haverhill over the Merrimack River has
brought to light some interesting history regarding the old time wharf known
as Chase's Wharf. For nearly a hundred years it has been owned by the Abel
Chase family and for a period of fifty years it was operated as a lumber
wharf. The lumber came from Maine, principally Bangor, and these vessels
sometimes came up the river under their own sail or were towed by a pilot
from Newburyport. Sometimes they were pulled out of the bad places in the
river by a rider on horseback. David Dole Chase and A. Washington Chase were
associated with their father in the lumber business and often the second son
used to tell of the time when he would get on the horse's back and the
animal would swim mid-stream until the rope was caught then A. W. Chase
would continue along the river bank until a safe anchorage was assured.
Chase's Wharf was the mecca for the excursionists and the various steamers
or side wheeled boats would take passengers and freight to Newburyport or
Black Rocks. The "General Bartlett" a favorite steamer, sometimes made a
trip to the isles of Shoals if it was the wish of the passengers, special
excursions to the resort being well advertised before the day of sailing.
The steamer, "City of Haverhill", the favorite craft, "Startled Faun" and
other boats left from Chase's Warf which has always retained its prestige as
one of Haverhill's landmarks.
Long before automobiles were contemplated or the possibility of flying
through the air thought of these pleasure boats were the happy means of a
change of scene and the joy of sailing on the water.
The Merrimack so well loved by the Chase family and the early residents was
a stream noted for its beauty and the shores were lined with graceful homes
while the landscape was a vision of beauty that called for exclamations of
delight.
Chase's Wharf where the excursionists landed is still retained by the
descendants of Abel Chase and the new bridge will further enhance the beauty
of the river. In the old days sturgeon and salmon were found in great
quantities and the small boy and expert angler took especial pleasure in
sitting on the wharf while the generous catch filled the pail or basket, for
fish was plenty in the days before the mills and factories lined the river.
