CHASE-LIST:
I am a descendant of Alvah CHACE and Clarissa through Sylvester Jones CHACE
(1829-1895), Daniel Champlin CHACE (1871-1946), Marjorie (CHACE) Robson
(1899-1991), Nancy Lee (Robson) Parkison Byers (1931-1999). Looking for
other descendants and ancestors.
Is anyone familiar with the family history "The Richmond Family 1594-1896
and Pre-American Ancestors 1040-1594" by Joshua Baily Richmond, published
1897? It shows what looks like my Clarissa Jones as a descendant of the
Richmond family. Their Clarissa Jones married Alvah CHACE and had a son
Sylvester. This data parallels info in RI marriage and death records on my
Sylvester Jones CHACE and the age is consistent, too. My Sylvester's
mother's maiden name is not identified in the records, but his middle name
is Jones per his marriage record.
According to the RICHMOND family history, this family goes back to John
Alden and Pricilla Mullins of Mayflower fame. I was wondering how reliable
it is as a source. The following is the excerpt from the book, on Family
Tree Maker's Genealogy Library, regarding Alvah CHACE, Clarissa Jones and
her mother:
ELIZABETH RICHMOND6 (Nathaniel5, Sylvester4, Silvester3, Edward2, John1)
was born
in Dartmouth, Mass., February 5, 1769, and died December 25, 1855. She
married,
December 25, 1794, Isaac Jones, Jr., of Dighton, Mass., who was born in
1767,
and died in 1853. CHILDREN (born in Dartmouth, Mass.): 2970. RICHMOND
JONES7,
born in 1796; married Nancy Wardell, and had one son, who graduated at
Cambridge.
2971. ELIZABETH JONES7, born in 1797; died in 1824. 2972. SYLVESTER JONES7,
born
in 1800. 2973. CLARISSA JONES7, born in 1802; married Alvah Chace.
Children:
Richmond8, Eliza8, George8, Sylvester8, Isaac8, and Charles8. 2974. RUTH
JONES7,
born in 1805. 2975. MARY JONES7, born in 1807. 2976. SARAH JONES7, born in
1814;
married Davis A. Blake. 2977. NANCY JONES7, born in 1812; married Isaiah
Barney.
Your help is appreciated!

Thank you, Dann Craig, for sending me the info on Simon and Sarah. A
person had used them in a DAR application to provide a link to Samuel
Chase of MD. However, your information indicates that there is no
connection. Too bad, because I'm looking for male descendants of Samuel
Chase, but haven't found any yet past the first generation.

I just found a marriage record for a Simon Chase and Sarah Wingate,
married Oct 8 (or 28) 1813 in Milton, Strafford, NH. Does anyone have
any family information, such as their children or his parents? I had
been searching for this couple in MD, so they may not be the same ones
I'm looking for.
Thanks,

Hi Mike and all listers,
I now need some input from someone who is using Generations Deluxe. I am
using it on my laptop and since my husband has a printer on his computer that
will print 17 x22 I decided to check in the printer setup on Generations and
change the size setting. It won't let me do this. Even in custom size. I am
limited to 9.5 wide. Is this because I haven't installed that printer driver
on the laptop (Win 95) or is this the limit of Gen. Deluxe.? I can plug this
thing into my regular printer which is the standard size. Kinko's? I
haven't a clue as to where one is near here but grandson in San Fransisco
works at one down there. At least it is a trail to follow and I could snail
mail a disc. If that works I will keep you all posted. Any other ideas on
this problem gratefully accepted. Lining up all those 8.5 x 11's gets pretty
tedious

Most places can take a CD. CD-ROM-R drives are now so inexpensive (at least
relatively) that the CD is rapidly replacing the 1.44 Mb diskette as the
standard medium.
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Folks,
Here is the theory -
In FTM, select the chart you wish to print, and then select the print
option. When the print box comes up asking what pages, etc. to print,
there should also be a small checkbox labelled "print to file". Select
this, and it will allow you to save the formatted chart in a file that
can be printed elsewhere. Kinko's and others have big 36" color
plotters that can do this. They will know what to do once they get the
file.
A warning though - how do they get the file? Well, uhh, I guess I put
it on a floppy, right? Maybe, maybe not. I've tried this with some big
charts I wanted to do and wound up with a 25 MB file (about 15 floppies
worth). The only way to transfer a file that big winds up being putting
it on a zip disk, which is OK, except most people don't have a zip drive
at home. At that point I gave up, so I never did find out if Kinko's
could accept my zip disk or not. I'd like to hear if anyone else has
done this.

Anyone ever have the question about how we could get great big scroll charts
instead of pasting 8.5 X 11" sheets of paper together ?? It cannot be that
hard..... blueprint machines, drafting printer and large commercial
photographic repro machines all couldn't do it ..question is , will they ?
Anyone ever have that one answered for them ??

Hi,
I am trying to locate information on my husbands grandmother for
medical
reasons and would like to know if I could post a message on the Chase
list
without joining the list, (just asking people to email me directly if
they
know anything about her).
I am searching for any information or leads on the following Chase.
Ruth Chase. She was born in 1912, give or take a few years. She lived
in
Toledo Ohio in March of 1934, possibly at the address 2476 Detroit (a
house
owned by a Mathilda Gore). She may have been married to a Jacob Snyder.
Either she or Jacob (or both) were carriers of a rare genetic disorder
(probably "Batten's Disease"). Carriers of this genetic disorder have
no
symptoms. However, if two people who are carriers of the gene for
Batten's
disease have a child, any child who inherits a copy of the gene from
both
parents (25% probability) will be severely developmentally disabled and
will
die between the ages of roughly 5 and 10 years old. Any child of a
carrier
has a 50% chance of being a carrier and of passing on the gene to their
children. There is no cure.
Any information, leads, suggestions regarding Ruth or any relatives
would be
greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Patricia Templeton

Genealogy scams in general:
Genealogical Web Site Watchdog (only for online scams) at:

The National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection
Committee is quite active at keeping an eye on the various
scams, including both online and offline fraudsters. If you
have a question about a particular company's services, you can
contact the NGS Consumer Protection Committee via traditional
mail at: National Genealogical Society's Consumer Protection
Committee, at 4527 17th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207-
2399. The committee also maintains Web pages at:
http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comconsumer.htm and at:
http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/comconsumerpsst.htm. However,
those pages do not mention specific companies.
Cyndi's List has a section for genealogy myths, hoaxes and
scams at: http://www.cyndislist.com/myths.htm
Specific companies:
I have received e-mail about the following companies; all have
been mentioned as having questionable services. I have listed URLs
where you can obtain further information:
Family Discovery.com - an online Web site that claims to have
"the Web's most versatile Award Winning collection of
genealogical databases." However, they don't mention the
"award" they received from the Better Business Bureau! The
Bureau says, "Based on BBB files, this company has an
unsatisfactory record with the Bureau due to unanswered
complaint(s)." Family Discovery.com charges $59.99 for a one-
year subscription. Most of the same information is available
elsewhere on the Web at no charge. In fact, many of the links
on FamilyDiscovery.com simply take you to free Web sites. You
can obtain the same information at no cost by using one of the
free search engines. Details are available on the Genealogical
Web Site Watchdog site at:
http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Warning. There
is an Anti-FamilyDiscovery.com newsletter at:
http://compuright.dyndns.org/familydiscovery/
The xxx Family Yearbook - In this case, substitute your last
name for the "xxx." For instance, an advertisement sent to a
person named Smith would be advertising The Smith Family
Yearbook while someone named Clark would receive an
advertisement for The Clark Family Yearbook. These "yearbooks"
claim to have genealogy information. However, those who
purchase the "products" are usually disappointed. The
producing company has several business names; for example, you
can find them listed as Mountain West News Service or as the
Mountain Pacific News Service. They also may appear as an
organizational name, such as "The Smith Family Yearbook."
However, all these "companies" have the same address: 1181 S.
Parker Road, #105, Denver, CO 80231. The Better Business
Bureau lists the parent company as MORPHCORP. The News Herald
of Panama City, Florida has an article about these "products"
at: http://www.newsherald.com/articles/2000/04/16/tp041600.htm
Family Tree House - I wrote about this company in the October
31, 1998 edition of this newsletter. The company gives an
appearance of a Web site that offers genealogy services. In
fact, it does not appear to sell anything. However, the same
company advertises on another Web site with an offer to sell
personal information obtained from genealogists who visit the
Family Tree House site. You innocently enter personal
information about yourself on Family Tree House and then
operators of the site sell your personal information to bulk
mail companies. Information for sale includes name, address,
e-mail address and more. You can read that article at:
http://ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#sells
The Historical Research Center (HRC) International, Inc. sells
"family histories" and coats of arms. Information about the
true value of these products can be found on the Genealogical
Web Site Watchdog site at:
http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Coats. Keep
in mind that this company sells franchises. A few years ago
they were listed as one of the top 30 fastest growing
franchises in America. You may find their products being sold
by other companies who purchase franchises. One such company
is Names.com, but apparently there are many others as well.
The International Hall of Names in Canada also sells "family
histories" and coats of arms. They are also mentioned on the
Genealogical Web Site Watchdog site at:
http://www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm#Coats.
I would caution anyone to be careful about "family coats of arms."
In fact, in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and most of western
Europe, there really is no such thing as a family coat of arms. In
those countries, arms have always been awarded to individuals, not
to families. Displaying a coat of arms that you are not authorized
to use is a form of identity theft, even if you do happen to have
the same last name as the original grantee. Any company offering
to sell you a copy of "your family's coat of arms" is selling a
bogus product.
If you believe you have been the victim of a genealogy scam, you
can do something about it! If you purchased products or services
from the above companies or any others that you feel did not live
up to advertised claims, demand a refund! If your money is not
returned within 30 days or so from a U.S. company, submit a
complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Bureau of Consumer
Protection at:
https://rn.ftc.gov/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01. A few
letters of inquiry from the federal government will send a strong
message to the people who produce products or services of
questionable value. If a Canadian company is involved, you can
register a complaint at:
http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/ct01250e.html.
You also might want to warn other genealogists and tell them of
your experiences. You can post a message to others in the "Scams
and Fraud" section of CompuServe's Genealogy Techniques Forum
message board. Go to:
http://forums.compuserve.com/vlforums/default.asp?SRV=GenealogyForum&AREA=Ms

I have "finally" added more to my MSN web page; GenealogyConnects. The
second one in this sign line.
On "Photo Page" ; us little Chase urchins; Hatches, my paternal maternal
line, including an endearing picture of my grandmother May Alice Hatch as a

"Chase Stones" from Norwich, Randolph Center, Essex Jct. and Bethel.
Please "join" and add your comments in message board or clarifications on
the photo descriptions and of course to the Lists as appropriate.
Unless otherwise stated, Place Names are in Vermont; Christ Church, Bethel,

I hope to get much more up within 1/2 week, as I will be moving soon and

1929 and nothing has changed.
The Jan. 1929 issue of the Chase Chronicle contains the following article
written by John Carroll Chase who, at the time, was president of the New
England Historic Genealogical Society and compiler of the "Seven Generations
of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase".
THE ENGLISH ANCESTRY OF AMERICAN CHASES
WHO CAN SHOW IT?
"So many varying and erroneous statements have been printed in regard to the
coming of the Chases to this country that it appears desirable to set forth
the PROVEN facts in the case, although it is probably a hopeless task to
correct the unnumbered stories that have appeared ever since the "Chase
fortune" myth was started on its way more than four-score years ago. (the
cause of many Chases to research their genealogy and to find the
misinformation)
The original story that the brothers, Aquila and Thomas Chase, who had
grants of land in Hampton, N. H., in 1640 (the first OFFICIAL mention of
them that has been found), came from Cornwall, England, was disproved by Mr.
George Bigelow Chase of Boston, in an article in the Heraldic Journal,
published in 1868. The investigations in regard to the matter were made by
Mr. Horatio G. Somerby, who reported that the family originated in Chesham,
Bucks, England and THIS HAS BEEN REPEATEDLY ASSERTED IN PRACTICALLY EVERY
PUBLISHED BIT OF FAMILY GENEALOGY.
It was claimed, that the aforesaid brothers were the sons of the
Aquila Chase who was baptized in Chesham, 7 Aug. 1580, and the name and
dates are entirely consistent with the supposition, but recent careful and
extended research shows that the assumption is not correct.
This Aquila Chase went from Chesham to London, 22 June 1606, married there
Martha Jelliman, and was the father of six children. He was a merchant
tailor, lived on Knight Rider's Street, attended the two established
churches in that street, and with his wife and five children was there
buried. The parish records do not show that he had a son Thomas but they do
show that he had a son Aquila, who was baptized in the parish of St.
Nicholas, Cole Abbey, 9 April 1626, and was buried there10 January 1659/60,
so that he could not have been identical with Aquila Chase of Hampton. The
brothers MAY be descended from the Chesham family but these Researches FAIL
to show it.
