Note from the Chase Chronicles - Oct. 1917
"Aquila Chase was born in 1618; but his birthplace has not been established,
notwithstanding the diligent and thorough personal researches made by Mr. H.
G. Somerby, on behalf of Mr. George Bigelow Chase of Boston. Mr. Somerby's
investigations were begun in 1861, and continued at intervals for some
years. He searched the records of every county in England, noting the names
and dates of births of all of the name of Chase during the latter half of
the sixteenth and early part of the seventeenth centuries. An interesting
and instructive account of Mr. Somerby's investigations has been published
by Mr. George Bigelow Chase in a pamphlet, entitled: "A Genealogical Memoir
of the Chase Family of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, in England, and of Hampton
and Newbury, in New England."
----------------------------------------
-----------
These two men assumed that they knew who the parents of Aquila and Thomas
Chase were. They were, of course, mistaken. But never-the-less in 1869,
without any documentation, or evidence, they put that assumption into print
in the above mentioned pamphlet which I believe is responsible for most of
the misinformation in the Aquila and Thomas Chase genealogies today. In
relating to the above pamphlet, John Carroll Chase said, "This connection
has been given in practically every publication relating to Chase families
that has later appeared."
For those of you that may not know what this is about, it is simply this:
The parents of Aquila and Thomas Chase have not been found.

"From a modest beginning eight years ago, the Chronicle has grown, year by
year, until today when in this number we are printing five hundred copies.
But we need a hundred more subscribers to put our little periodical upon a
firm substantial basis. About fifty of this issue will go to libraries and
historical societies. No one makes anything out of the Chronicle; its
preparation and publication are wholly a labor of love."

For much I have given release.
I do not feel as though I should have a date

Times Square would be fun to do

I look forward because at last
am able to look to the past.
Where's my grandpa and his.

More importantly are real live ones

Hello Chase researchers ! Happy New Year !
What is exciting about Debbie's site is the family tree of Bonnie Jill
Wilkenson,in which she has the wife of William CHase (1) being Mary Townley,
William Chase (2) Elizabeth Holden, William Chase (3) Sara Hale whgo begat
Jacob Chase m. Mary Hall.....
I think if this can be cited, it would clear up a lot of problems I have been
having ...
Debbie, is there any way you could contact Bonnie Jill and ask her about this?
? What a way to be ablt to start the millennium !! Filling in the blanks on
our Williams !
Take care!

Dear cousins,
This is to let you know that Stephanie died peacefully early Tuesday
morning. We will lay her to rest tomorrow morning among her maternal
ancestors and near to her father. Thank you to everyone. Your prayers
helped, I know, to end her struggle and to hasten and ease her way home, and
your kindness helped me personally more than you can imagine. Sandy

I have both Philbrick and Chase names on one of my lines. I would very much
like a copy of the article mentioned.

Note from the Chase Chronicles - July 1917
"One of the curiosities of our genealogical studies is the fact that so many
people have written to us that they are sure of their ancestry in one or two
points at least, and that no further attention need be paid to this subject.
Only a few days ago the editor received a letter from a lady in the West
stating that she wanted to ascertain some of her Revolutionary ancestry, and
that her father was a very great antiquarian, and had preserved in his notes
the descendants of the earlier dates and the lines, so that no attention
need be paid to that. She only wanted to know who had distinguished
themselves in the Revolution, so that she might join a society. This is what
she said in substance. Aquila Chase married an Indian squaw; she was the
mother of all his children. Bishop Philander Chase was a cousin, or very
near relative of Aquila, and he also married a squaw. At this point she
seemed to stumble a little, because she said she could not exactly find out
the squaw's name. No wonder.
Where did this legend come from? It keeps springing up here and there every
little while. I recollect at least four cases which have been brought to my
notice, where the parties were absolutely sure that their ancestry was of
Indian blood, and that the earlier Chases married famous women like these.
Now there is not one atom of truth in the whole of it.
The only squaw that came into the family was five generations down through *
Eleazer Chase who went from Newbury to New Marblehead, now Windham, Maine,
near Portland, and for his second wife he did marry a squaw, and not to his
discredit either, for she evidently was a very bright woman. The best proof
of this is that through this Eleazer, our eminent kinsman Solon Chase, the
greenbacker came. If any other of our kindred are hugging this delusion of a
squaw mother, please notify us."

(It seems that the Chronicles was a little confused about who married the
native American woman. The version below appeared in a 1913 issue of the
chronicle and agrees with John Carroll's version in the "Seven Generations"
book with the exception that the book makes no mention of Lois's ancestry.)
* "Aquila's son Moses, born 1663, married Ann Follansbee. Their son Moses,
born 1688, married Elizabeth Wells. Their son Eleazer, born 1722, married
(1) Jeannette Elder, (2) Mrs. Mary Brown, was the father, by his first wife,
of Isaac who married Lois Smith and afterwards settled in Standish, Maine.
Lois Smith was born on Cape Cod, and was the daughter of a sea captain and
his half-breed Indian wife. After her father's death she was taken into her
grandfather Smith's family, which became one of a colony organized on the
Cape to settle in Maine. This colony of a dozen families sailed from Salem,
landed at the mouth of the Saco River, and some of them settled in Standish.
Here the Indian maid married Isaac Chase, who cleared a tract of forest and
built a home, and his house and farm are still in the possession of his
descendants."

Welcome Lisa, and thank you for accepting the highly coveted :-) position of
List Owner. I have been keeping up with the list for some months now, but
as yet have not been able to have much success finding my grandfather. As
of Christmas eve though, I do have a direction to proceed, unfortunately, it
has to be done via snail mail. As I find my ancestors, I will gladly share
my progress with the list and would appreciate any "constructive correction"
as may be needed.
Sincerely,

Dear List Members: It is that time of year when many researchers get
that
first new computer and they begin signing on to the mailing lists by the
dozens. They are excited and want to share and become involved
overnight.
Please be understanding. They will not follow the rules because they do
not
know them yet.
If something slips through, please let it go by without response by
you. I
will take care of it from this side.
I look forward, as you do, to learning what these new researchers might
have on our ancestral lines. I do not want to discourage them from
sharing, for they just might hold the key for one of us.
Again, I want to thank each of you for helping to make our mailing list
the
friendly and helpful list it is.
