I am new to the list and would like to pose a question related, perhaps
indirectly, to the Rt. Rev. Philander Chase (1755-1852).
I am searching for the parents of my 3 ggf---Rev. William Philander
Chase JOHNSON, b. 5 Nov 1806 in Bristol Twp, Bucks Co, PA, d Nov 1852 in
Hinds Co, MS.
WPC JOHNSON was, like his namesake, an Episcopalian minister who served
the Church until his death from yellow fever while on missionary work in
Mississippi. He married Ann Eliza WASHINGTON (17 Sept 1807-18 April
1851) at Mt Zephyr, Alexandria, VA in 1831. Ann Eliza was descended from
Lawrence WASHINGTON and hence related to George, so her lineage is well
documented. It is the Johnson side that remains an enduring mystery.
One LDS record indicates that William Philander Chase JOHNSON might be
the son of James 2 JOHNSON of Bucks Co, WIFE UNKNOWN, marriage abt 1800.
This James JOHNSON was the son of James 1 JOHNSON and Martha BESSONETT
(b. 25 Jan 1742), both of Bucks Co.
The question we have always had is this:
Was William Johnson named to honor a maternal family relationship or to
venerate a famous minister? The little research I've done doesn't answer
the question.
1) None of Philander Chase's sisters seem to be the unknown wife of
James 2 JOHNSON.
2) Although Philander CHASE would have been well known to residents of
Poughkeepsie, NY and New Orleans in 1806, the young rector did not yet
have any national renown. It seems problematic that a resident of Bucks
County PA, even an Episcopal minister in that county, would have known
Philander CHASE well enough to name a son after him.
Is there a CHASE/JOHNSON, NH/PA nexus here that rings a bell with anyone
on this list? Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
for any assistance.

To all those old and new to this site, would you kindly please review all of
the following information, particularly the third generation to see if
anyone looks familiar? Just three generations down, there is a Van Ransler
Chase who married a Sophronia Etta Garner. Van and Sophronia had 23
children...yes that is NOT a typo...my great-grandmother really gave birth
to 23 children. How many actual pregnancies is unknown. The problem I am
running into however is that with 23 children you would think there would be
an awful lot of offspring out there...and I can't find any except for my
grandfather, Lesco. Can someone please help me? Someone out there MUST be
related.
I would appreciate any information. I would especially like to find out the
true parents of Frederick Chase. We don't know for sure what role Mathias
plays in the family picture.

Hi All,
Keith recommended that I let you all know that for a $3.00 fee, the
following organization will exchange American Money into British Sterling.
If you send them an e-mail they will call you, and tell you how much you
need to send them and they will then exchange the money into Sterling
pounds.
I recently did this in the effort to join the Norfolk, England Gen.
Society.
The website for the group is:

Thank you again to all to directed me to Picton Press and the New England
Historic Genealogy Society for the "7 Generations" book. I'm suprised how
many Chases on this listserv don't reference this book. And when I do a
roots search, very few people mention anyone past the third generation of
Aquila. I have two questions: Has there ever been an effort to expand the "7
Generations" book beyond the 7th generation? And are there really a lot
more 1st generations that don't go back to Aquila, Thomas, and
lliam? ---Joe Chase
Dear Fellow Chase researchers:
I have a set of books, "Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography",
printed 1888, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. I am listing
all the Chases that are in the books with their dates and places of
birth and death if they weren't alive when the books were published.
If you want the entire article for any or all of them, let me know and I
will send it to you. These are brief but comprehensive biographies and
there is virtually no family info for them unless their close kin was
also in the book. Still, if you are related to them (or just curious),
this would make a nice addition to their notes. I already have them
transcribed so all I have to do is copy and paste to an e-mail with one
exception; Salmon P. Chase. If someone REALLY wants his info, I will
type it out and send it to you. I have included everything concerning
his family with his name and vitals below. Everything else is
biographical. His is the only one with this kind of genealogical info.
It's too bad the publishers of these books didn't provide at least some
info on marriages and other family ties. I guess with over 6000 pages in
6 volumes, they were concerned about space.
I believe the info provided to be fairly accurate; after all, it was
printed 110 years ago when many of these people were still alive.
Let me know what you want. Send requests to jtdtjtdt(a)concentric.net so
as not to clog up the Chase list.
If anyone can help me find the ancestors of my gg g'parents,
Darling/Darlin/Darwin Chase b. about 1805 in NC and his 2nd wife, Anne
Brooks, no further info, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Keith, they should all be there, I was just posting the details on the
Ezra and Isaac members of my database as there was some confusion
between me and other list members as to who was who. I had posted a
response earlier that I found that there apparently are 2 different
Isaacs born in 1791 that are cousins.

Charlie, I just took time to look at your home page. It appears that your Isaac is
a cousin to the Isaac that I was referring to. Our common link is a couple of
generation further back, with James CHASE & Elizabeth BLETHEN. I'm through James
JR, brother to your Zaccheus. The Isaac that is a brother to my line was also born
in 1791, on 12 Dec in Little Compton, Newport, RI.
