My maternal gr-great-grandmother Sophia born 1832 in Iowa according to 1900 census was said to be the half sister of Marguerite Charpentier for whom we have birth record linking her to this Joseph Charpentier. Thus:
>From Borromeo Catholic Church records, St. Charles County MO, Vol. II, page 401, 2nd entry., St. Charles County Translations of Parish records, Vol II.
"Marguerite Charpentier
The 8th of August, I baptized Marguerite Charpentier, daughter of Joseph and Louise Racine, born the 5th of June, 1830. Godfather - Francois Racine. Godmother - Felicite Moitie. J.B. Smedts."
Transcribed copy in St. Charles Genealogical Society. Family tradition recorded in letters states that she was actually born in the present State of Iowa, probably in present day Keokuk, but there were no Catholic Churches there then as Iowa was an Indian Territory, so baptism would have to take place in MO.
>From Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Vol. XII, 1892, AMERICAN FUR COMPANY EMPLOYEES-1818-19, edited by Reuben Gold Thwaites.
"When engaged: March 6, 1819. Name. Charpantier, Joseph, Time 3 yrs. Capacity, Boatman. Where engaged Montreal. Wages 600. Where employed, Lower mississippi. Remarks, With Laperche.
1816 LaPerche, Joseph, Mackinac, discharged on own account.
Names of St. Jean's men. 1819-
Thomas Berthaume.
Amable Cadrieu.
Pierre Menard.
Joseph Charpentier.
Jean Bt. Desjardin.
Vol. X1, AMERICAN FUR COMPANY INVOICES-1821-22, pagees 370-
LIST OF TRADERS. ON THEIR OWN ACCOUNT AND RISK. Joseph La Perche, alias St. Jean, for his trade on the lower Mississippi. Michilmackinac, 30 July 1821. .
Joint Account With the American Fur Company. . Joseph La Perche and Russell Farnham, for trade of the lower Mississippi and its dependencies. Michilmackinac, July 27, 1822.
In a note on page 477: "Joseph LaPerche dit St. Jean was a Canadian who had come to the Northwest before 1801. In that year he was trading below Prairie du Chien, on the Mississippi. During the War of 1812-15 he was one of Dickson's agents, being both lieutenant and interpreter in the Indian Department. In 1816 he was at Mackinac, and as here shown joined the American Fur Company. As late as 1821 he was still trading among the Sauk and Foxes. -ED."."
Annals of Iowa, vol. 33, 1956, Article entitled "Rat Row in Keokuk".
This artical relies on a (then) recently discovered book of accounts kept by Robert E. Mott for the American Fur Company in Keokuk in the year 1833. I've been unable to locate the original book of accounts, Iowa Archives has no idea where it is, but the article names Joseph Charpentier as one of the residents of Keokuk who did regular business with Mr. Mott. Other than this there is little documentation for any of these traders to go on in that time and place.
It seems from this that Joseph Charpentier must have first worked with Lacloche for a year from 1818 and then been partnered up with Joseph LaPerche dit St. Jean. As the later was trading "on his own account and risk" precisely in the region of Keokuk, we must assume that Mr. Charpentier remained working with or without him until the region opened up to settlement in the mid 1830's. By that time he had also established himself In St. Charles Missouri where he seems to have died.

It appears that we're looking at the same Joseph Charpentier, who indeed was from Canada. I have some records, that I want to re-check first. Where was your information from? Am I correct in understanding that Joseph died in 1841 in Missouri? If so, this info will help determine that I'm giving you correct info.
