Message Board Post:
I'm looking for the origin and parentage of Joseph Charpentier born in Canada probably before 1800, who came to the Mississippi River area working as an Indian trader and who left few records of his existence beyond female descendants. He may have had a brother Antoine Charpentier who signed up with him again later in 1819.
Joseph Charpentier appears as an employee of the American Fur Company from "Montreal" and at least from 1818 he was working on the upper Mississippi River.
"Names of St. Jean's men. 1819 Thomas Berthaume.
Amable Cadrieu.
Pierre Menard.
Joseph Charpentier.
Jean Bt. Desjardin."
Seems he didn't return, do you know of any candidates, men who took off and disappeared from Canada records about that time?

translated thus:
Natural born (that is to say, not "legitimized" by marriage) daughter of Joseph Charpentier
July 19, 1823 I undersigned had christened Marguerite daugther of Joseph Charpentier and unknown mother ( overwrite parent) born july 6, 1820. the godfather as been Joseph Odet and the godmother...
This daughter married Antoine Garcia in 1836 and then I lose track of her. Maybe among the Garcia's of Louisiana?
Then by 1830 Joseph took up with a half breed girl from St. Charles MO, and had another daughter named Margurette
The Catholic Borromeo Church records in St. Charles MO lists the following:
"Marguerite Charpentier
The 8th of August, (1830) I baptized Marguerite Charpentier, daughter of Joseph and Louise Racine, born the 5th of June 1830. Godfather - Francois Racine. Godmother - Felicite Moitie. JB Smedts (Priest)"
She always claimed to have been born in Lee county Iowa, no priest to baptize her there, but seems the family moved between Iowa trading posts and St. Charles MO regularly.
Looks like he died in 1841, if this is him?
1841, December 16th was buried Joseph Carpentier. J.B. Smedts
They are not listed on many other records, missed by the census, probably because they spent most of their time at remote trading posts?
I'd like to tie this individual in with point of origin and birth family. Any ideas or leads?
Thanks!
