FONTANA, CALIF. - William "Bill" L. Charlton, 74, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Feb. 10, 2012, at Inland Valley Care Hospice Center in Pomona, California.
Bill was born Jan. 23, 1938, in Salem, Ohio a son of the late Wilbur and Mary Charlton of Greenford, Ohio and came to California in 1975 with his life partner, Howard Yeager, of Canfield, Ohio.
He graduated from Kent State University on June 11, 1960, with a B.S. in Education. He taught music for 11 years at Hillman Junior High in Youngstown. He worked 14 years in food service for F.W. Woolworth, Ginos, and Rowland Unified School District. He retired in 2003 after working 16 years as a full charge bookkeeper for Arnel Compressor Co.
He leaves his domestic partner, Howard Yeager of 44 years; foster son Andrew Hewlett; two brothers, Ronald and Suzanne Charlton of Trego, Montana and Robert and Susie Charlton of Salem, OH; three nephews, Matt and Cheryl Charlton of Trego, Kenneth and Erica Charlton of Columbia, Ky. and Joseph Charlton of Columbiana, Ohio; two great-nephews, Kaleb and Joshua; and one great-niece, Kaelyn.
He was a member of the Claremont United Methodist Church since 1986. He and his partner were very active with Reconciling Ministries Network, an organization for full inclusion of all people in the United Methodist Church.
Memorial gifts may be made in Bill's name to CUMC, 211 W. Foothill Blvd., Claremont, CA 91711, Reconciling Ministries.
A memorial service will be Saturday, March 3, at CUMC Sanctuary at 2 p.m
Greenford is an unincorporated community in central Green Township, Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office.
